SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. The Positive Realism Of Jürgen Klopp

In the tragi-comic dystopia that passes for the 21st century, maintaining a world-view that is both realistic and positive is quite the mental and emotional workout. The gloomier types amongst us often claim realism for themselves and, quite understandably, given the hellish state of the planet, they insist that positivity is the preserve of...

Liverpool’s Formidable Front-Six Is Back In Business

The way in which Sadio Mane tore Tottenham to shreds in that first-half at Anfield truly was a sight to behold. Liverpool’s returning hero was almost unplayable, scoring twice and coming very close to notching another couple before half-time. It was an individual performance that perfectly highlighted what the Reds have been missing in Mane’s...

Breaking down the Sum of Liverpool’s Parts – Part 2

Any back-line - let alone the back-five of Liverpool's - will face adversities in the form of the high initial press in trying to lay the foundation for attacks. Jürgen Klopp's system for Liverpool works in a multitude of ways in order to overcome these adversities as mentioned in Part 1 here, but nevertheless, football...

Is Liverpool’s La Manga Break A Good Thing?

You know it's a slow news day when the official website is running an article which is essentially John Aldridge saying that holidays are great and trips away help with team bonding and morale. The ex-Red goal-poacher reckons the training camp in La Manga is "a really good idea" and the time can be...

How Gini Put on a Magic Show against Spurs

"Yeah, but what does he actually do? We paid £25million for a quicker Joe Allen, didn't we? There's no output, he misses sitters and he's pretty safe on the ball." This was a perpetual argument/debate earlier on in the season when it became apparent that Gini Wijnaldum wasn't going to fulfill the expectations so many had...

Klopp And Can Have A Plan

Here at Latest News, we have an agenda. It is not a Trumpian agenda. There is no snake oil being sold. It's just that, without straying into self-delusion and inaccuracy, this column will always aim to present what's new around Liverpool Football club in the most positive way possible. Granted, the very fabric of...

Liverpool’s Win Against Spurs is a Gentle Reminder

Liverpool's win against Spurs was Jurgen Klopp's men putting the league on notice. The Reds went into the evening kick-off on Saturday having not won a game since the turn of the year. Swansea City, Wolves, Plymouth and Southampton had all turned to Anfield, frustrated the hosts and walked away with something to show for...

Liverpool Find Their Attacking Fluency to Overcome Spurs

When is it going to end? The run of form that Liverpool are currently on is not in keeping with the squad at their disposal or the quality of their coach. You have to go back to the 31st of December to find the last league victory for Jurgen Klopp's side. Since then we...

VIDEO: Nina Kauser Show – Have Liverpool Turned A Corner?

The Nina Kauser show on YouTube is back! For my fifth Anfield Index TV show I decided to discuss whether Liverpool are out of their poor run of form in the Premier League that has seen a draw away to Sunderland, a draw against Manchester United, a loss to Swansea, a draw to Chelsea and a...

Henderson Saying The Right Things

There has always been a tradition around Anfield and environs of club leaders saying the right thing at the right time. You can trace it back to that most articulate and circumspect of gents, Bill Shankly. The Scot was famously loquacious but there was never a word out of place. Every phrase was measured...

No time for panic – Klopp’s playing the long game

There’s no doubt that we’ve had one of the worst starts to a calendar year since, well I’d rather not look into it, to be honest. We’ve had enough dark moments the past few weeks without adding stats to the feeling of doom permeating the club and practically every Kop forum and Facebook group...

Both Wijnaldum and Can Have Roles to Play This Season

Farewell then, Tottenham Hotspur. They came, they saw, they met a frosty-faced Senegalese who wanted a word. Despite a dislike of them which has survived decades and has no basis – though maybe it had something to do with Glenn Hoddle’s louche hair and tight shorts – I do find them fascinating. In the 90s they...

Wijnaldum: Klopp Believes In Us

"Better to be king for a night than schmuck for a lifetime." Rupert Pupkin, King of Comedy In Martin Scorsese's King of Comedy, the central protagonist, the splendidly monikered Rupert Pupkin, is a quietly unhinged man with delusions of grandeur and dreams of celebrity status. Pupkin, whose dark psychopathology eventually sees him resorting to kidnap and...

Lallana: We Need To Be More Consistent

For the entirety of January and the beginning of February, weekends have been a matter of endurance for Liverpool fans. For this scribbler, the only means of escaping the crippling ennui that seemed to grow with each pathetic result was to indulge a lifelong passion for film that rivals my ardour for the Reds. Ironically, getting lost...

Spurs-Slaying Reds Are On The Road To Recovery

Up until Saturday, 2017 had been awful as a Liverpool supporter. Our pre-Christmas spring in the step was long gone, everything felt like a chore, and like Popeye without his spinach, you were left desperately hoping the Reds would give us a much-needed adrenalin shot. Why did we ever doubt them, though? There has been so much...

Observations from Liverpool’s win against Spurs

So that's what it feels like. A win in the league. The first three points since New Year's Eve when Pep Guardiola's Manchester City got the full Jurgen Klopp treatment. Truth be told it's the first time we've looked like a Klopp side since the turn of the year. The performance against Spurs had...

Liverpool 2 Tottenham Hotspur 0: Player Ratings

Liverpool rose from their prolonged slumber to show glimpses of the form which made them so mesmerizing in the early part of the season. Liverpool were the hungrier team tonight and walked away with the points. What a difference a week's break makes, the first for Liverpool since December. This is how the Reds fared. Simon Mignolet...

Can Clyne And The Reds Get Back On Track?

If you've ever struggled to break a pattern of behaviour, then you'll know how difficult the psychological aspect of that battle is. There's a whole pageant that seems to play out around the drawing of lines in the sand. Just one more chocolate bar and THEN the salad diet will commence, just a final...

Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur Preview: Top four battle continues

Liverpool's players will look to lift the morbid mood around the club with a positive performance at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, with three points really needed at a now-crucial time in the Reds' season. THE DETAILS Match: Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur Venue: Anfield Referee: Anthony Taylor Date: Saturday 11th February Time: 17:30 BST FORM Liverpool have won just one game in 10, away at...

Why Sturridge and the Liverpool System Clash

The Daniel Sturridge "will he or won't he leave" saga is now more drawn out than the "will Ross and Rachel get it on" storyline. Just when it looks as though the tide has turned and the majority want him sold he scores a striker's goal which reminds everyone exactly what he can offer and...

Can Sturridge Fire Liverpool To The Champions League?

When Latest News was but a tyke, Liverpool bestrode the domestic and European stage with a paradoxical blend of dignified swagger and quiet arrogance - a unique combination that often accompanies greatness, peculiar to those who know they are the best but retain a humility about that fact. From 1977 to 1984 the Reds were...

Liverpool’s Blunt Midfield Needs Sharpening

Ever since the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Burnley in the second game of the Premier League season there have been concerns as to whether or not Liverpool can break down teams who look to park the bus. It's been a slow burner with the Reds putting the likes of Leicester City, Watford and...

Wijnaldum: Reds Must Get In A Flow

"Yes, but what does he DO?" How many times have you heard, or perhaps even uttered, that question in relation to the contribution of Georgino Wijnaldum to the Liverpool team? The Dutchman, signed by Jürgen Klopp last summer, has been quite a divisive figure amongst Reds-watchers since his arrival. It was clear from the start that Klopp...

Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur – Key Battles

That dreaded 10-game spell is a thing of the past. Liverpool played a game every Tuesday or Wednesday in January and for the first time since mid-December, they have got a full week to prepare for Tottenham's visit to Anfield on Saturday. It was a week that Jurgen Klopp started with giving the players a...

Wijnaldum A Better Fit For Liverpool Than Emre Can

After a positive 1-1 draw with runaway leaders Chelsea, many thought Liverpool had turned a corner, putting their dismal January form behind them to kick on and fight for a top four spot. However, the predictability with which Liverpool slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Hull City marked a new low for Jurgen Klopp’s...

Do Reds Fans Know What They Have In Klopp?

Liverpool fans are the daftest and most emotionally volatile bunch of people on the planet. Now, before you start to type your opprobrium and disdain for that opinion in the comments section, save the righteous indignation for some other platform, because Latest News openly admits to fitting cozily into both categories. There is no point to...

Defensive Deja Vu for Liverpool

Defeat to Hull City meant Liverpool's disastrous start to 2017 continued. Jurgen Klopp's men have won just one of their 10 matches since the turn of the year and this run has seen relegation battlers Hull and Swansea pick up maximum points against them as well as having their FA Cup run brought to a...

Can Lallana And Liverpool Be Winners?

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Closing. Always be closing. ALWAYS BE CLOSING. A-I-D-A. Attention, Interest, Decision, Action. Attention – Do I have you attention? Interest – Are you interested? Klopp Out? Only A Fool Would Want The Liverpool Manager Sacked

Remember those optimistic Autumn days of 2015, when the entire Liverpool fanbase felt as united as it had done for many years? It was glorious. The arrival of Jurgen Klopp was an incredible statement of intent by the club, and the reaction that followed his appointment was bordering on hysteria. He was the one we...

Liverpool lack imagination to overcome Hull City

It is fair to say that Liverpool have been a disappointment at the start of 2017. They have been knocked out of both domestic cups with losses to Wolves in the FA Cup and Southampton in the EFL Cup. Along with the poor form in the cup Liverpool have yet to win a league...
