SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Henderson’s Gerrard-esque performance against United is a bad sign

Why is Jordan Henderson trying to be Steven Gerrard? I never wanted to see a repeat performance of what I saw Steven Gerrard give in the second half against Chelsea in the 2013/14 season as he tried single handedly to make amends for his slip. It wasn't his fault but he acted like every single...

Van Gaal’s False Fellaini Floors Flailing Reds

Our Reds were on top for most of the game, dominating against a Manchester United team who seem to get weaker every time they come to Anfield. Our Reds had Marouane Fellaini - Louis Van Gaal's plan A, B, and C - rattled from the moment Lucas accidentally head-butted him in the face on purpose...

Why we must be patient with Jordan Ibe

If Liverpool's progress under Jurgen Klopp is to gather pace, then the development of talented young players at his disposal will surely be of crucial importance. This was certainly the case under Brendan Rodgers, who successfully nurtured players like Raheem Sterling and allowed him to express himself in a side that pushed Manchester City all the...

Where are Liverpool’s Leaders?

According to the dictonary a leader is the person who leads or commands a group, organisation, or country. Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Javier Mascherano, Sami Hyppia, these were all players who were natural born leaders and Liverpool fans have been lucky enough to see these players grace the hallowed Anfield turf and Liverpool fans have...

Observations From The Shitty Loss to United

Well that was shit, wasn't it? Although, who didn't see this coming? Liverpool dominate, create chance after chance and lose to a set-piece goal. It's a match we've seen play out more times than we'd like to admit. Make no mistake about it, it was a real smash and grab victory by United. They turned...

Liverpool FC 0 vs Manchester United 1 : Player Ratings

Simon Mignolet (6.5) - Was literally a spectator in the first-half. Had nothing much to do in the second-half (including the goal). Caught a couple of balls that needed to be caught. Nathaniel Clyne (6.5) - Was far more influential offensively in this game, making a couple of great diagonal runs infield on the overlap. Was...

Is Coutinho The New Daniel Sturridge?

We all know how important Phillipe Coutinho is to Liverpool Football Club when he's on the pitch. When he plays well the whole team plays well. But at the minute for me, his recurring injuries a cause for concern for both Liverpool fans and manager Jürgen Klopp. Since the start of the current season...

Illustrating Liverpool’s Pressing Against Arsenal

We've been collecting Pressing Stats since 2013 on Anfield Index and after after attending the game at Anfield I expected some unbelievable pressing numbers from the non-stop epic draw against Arsenal, and I wasn't wrong! Liverpool's pressing effort was one of the very best against Arsenal as they pressed the ball every 1.85 of passes Arsenal...

Daniel Sturridge – The Phantom Menace

Liverpool 3-3 Arsenal: a pulsating match; end to end, with chances galore; a "great advert for the Premier League". All these English football cliches, and more, could've been, and were, used to reflect on Liverpool's latest home match, under the floodlights at Anfield on Wednesday evening. A crackling pre-game atmosphere was pitched up several notches...

The Mignolet Problem

What a week it has been so far for Liverpool fans. With the arrival of Steven Caulker on a six month emergency loan, something that split fans' opinions, the news that Joel Matip has allegedly agreed a contract with Liverpool and will walk away from Schalke on a free transfer during the summer, news...

Joe Allen – Does He Deserve More Playing Time?

In many ways, he was the face of the Brendan Rodgers era. A 15 million pound signing from Rodgers's former club in his very first transfer window in charge, Joe Allen was expected to be the man who took some of the burden off Stevie Gerrard, as Liverpool embarked on a new era. But after...

The Transfer Committee, Klopp and Steven Caulker

Jekyll and Hyde Reds grab a draw against Arsenal

Liverpool fans witnessed the good, the bad and the ugly in Wednesday night's 3-3 draw with Arsenal at Anfield. A Roberto Firmino and Emre Can inspired first-half saw the Reds take the lead twice before being pegged back by defensive errors. After Arsenal took the lead early in the second-half due to a well...

Emre Can – Vorsprung Durch Technik

If you could design the perfect central midfielder, they'd be tall, athletic, with raw power and pace. Then look at Emre Can and tell me he doesn't fit the model?! He, by design, is the perfect midfielder. His attributes are made to dominate football matches in the Premier League and go on to become...

The Sturridge Replacement – Michy Batshuayi

It's not often you hear that a Premier League club, one that regularly qualifies for Europe, is prepared to sell arguably their best player for as little as £25 million when the player has three and a half years remaining on their current deal. Stories came out over the weekend that Liverpool are set...

However, after the recent game versus Exeter City, a new position became highlighted to Klopp, Goalkeeper, Adam Bogdan, who after an...

On Tuesday morning Liverpool acted with rare speed to tie up the loan move of Steven Caulker for the rest of the season. Caulker arrives from his parent club, Queen’s Park Rangers, having spent the first half of the season at Southampton. The timing of this signing means that Caulker should be available to...

Liverpool’s Wishlist: Mario Götze & Two Other Attacking Targets

Amidst a few troubles as of late for Jürgen Klopp’s redmen (that phrase in itself gives this writer more motivation for this article than any article written under Brendan Rodgers), the need for goals ranks highest of all. Well, perhaps second to injuries, but at least goals are something that can be altered to...

Klopp’s Kids

Every time Liverpool step on to the pitch I always try and learn something. For instance some of the things I learned under Brendan Rodgers were, I learned that he didn't have a clue about managing a team who didn't have a twenty goal a season striker playing for him or what a defence...

Alexandre Lacazette – A Season-Defining Transfer Rumour

Linked with moves to Ligue 1 Champions PSG, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool, Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette was possibly the hottest property of the 2015 summer. The chairman of Lyon, Jean-Michel Aulas, came out in May and seemed to imply if a club were to prise his star asset away from...

It's been a bit of a rollercoaster season for Liverpool fans already and we're only just in January. Leicester’s Ben Chilwell linked with Liverpool move

With Liverpool being linked to both Leicester's Ben Chilwell and Lorient's Raphael Gueirrero it's becoming clear that the club feel they need to strengthen their left-back position.
