Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Have Liverpool Players Really Gone From Heroes to Zeroes?

The short answer to this question is no. A team that has the quality of Liverpool does not suddenly drop from the dizzying heights of Premier League success to nowhere in the space of a few short months. However, there is obviously definite cause for concern for everyone at the club and for loyal...

Thank You Roberto Firmino: Brazilian Striker Deserves Credit

The press, the fans and the neutrals have all criticised Roberto Firmino this season. However, Bobby deserves credit for firing Liverpool out of their current dry spell.  Liverpool had gone 2 Premier League games without scoring, when Manchester United arrived at Anfield in January. Mo Salah slalomed through Manchester United's defence, in search of that...

Thiago Influence Could Help Liverpool Evolve From False 9 Tactics

Roberto Firmino was back to his best in Liverpool's recent 3-1 win away to Spurs. The Brazilian opened the scoring on the cusp of half time and showed the movement, touch, and sublime link play of old as the Reds scored their first league goals in over a month. The number 9's goal, a tap in...

According to reports from numerous journalists who cover the Anfield club, the English champions will tie...

LFC News Roundup

Liverpool had another busy weekend, putting in a great performance while winning at West Ham. There was a developing transfer story too. West Ham 1-3 Liverpool: Observations as majestic second half secures vital win

With Roberto Firmino rested and Sadio Mane the latest addition to the injury list, it looked as if Liverpool were going to need to win ugly at the London Stadium. A drab first-half seemed to confirm those pre-match convictions. But in the end, the win wasn't ugly; it was beautiful. Either side of a contender...

Tactical Breakdown: Spurs 1-3 Liverpool

A month ago, Spurs travelled to Anfield in a contest for the league's top spot. Since then, results have tailed off for both sides, and an hour prior to kickoff, the news that Fabinho was injured compounded a terrible winless run for Liverpool with more adversity. However, the truth was that the Reds had played...

Player Ratings for Liverpool 3-1 West Ham

January may have been a rough month to start for Liverpool, but a couple matches in the capital at the end of the month have firmly put the Reds back on track and in title contention again. Alisson – 7 The handsome Brazilian wasn’t asked to do much today with Antonio surprisingly ineffective and Soucek subdued,...

Liverpool Light Up London Again In West Ham Win

Liverpool moved to third in the Premier League table after a 3-1 win away to West Ham United at the London Stadium. A brace from Mohamed Salah as well as a Georginio Wijnaldum goal sent the Reds into a 3-0 lead before Craig Dawson pulled a consolation back for the hosts with only a few...

Jurgen Klopp’s Arrigo Sacchi Influence Evident In Liverpool’s Offside Trap

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has on record in the past to say that Arrigo Sacchi -- the legendary former Parma and A.C. Milan coach -- is one of his biggest influences in football. Sacchi, now 74, guided Milan to back to back European Cups in the late 80's/early 9o's while using a high pressing, intense...

Dominant Wijnaldum must continue in No.6 role for Liverpool

A victory, at long last. Liverpool are finally back to winning ways in the Premier League for the first time since December 19th, and what a performance they produced at Tottenham. When Fabinho was nowhere to be seen in the starting lineup, the levels of anxiety went through the roof, with more dropped points appearing likely. Similarly,...

Klopp’s Tactical Masterclass vs Spurs: Dual False-Nines

Inside of two minutes against Spurs, you could tell something was different. In previous matches this year, Jurgen Klopp had used Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Xherdan Shaqiri as attacking No.8s, with Thiago and Gini Wijnaldum anchoring the midfield.  In those games, the dynamic felt a little off and people kept getting in each other’s way. Thiago...

“That was us” – Klopp revels in Reds’ convincing victory over Spurs

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp was in high spirits after watching his team return to form with a 3-1 Premier League win over Spurs in London. The home side adopted a not-so-surprising Jose Mourinho approach, sitting deep and hoping for openings on the break. However, despite an early scare due to Heung-min Son's offside goal, Spurs...

The truth behind Liverpool’s drought

Liverpool’s goal drought never really bothered me. Some went to the extreme, claiming the system had been found out and Jurgen Klopp needed to make wholesale changes to get them firing again. In truth, it was a mixture of bad luck and bad finishing. I wrote about it in detail for work.  The Reds had...

Klopp gives injury update ahead of Spurs game

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp gave a general injury update ahead of his side's trip to play Spurs in London on Thursday night. Thankfully, Klopp confirmed that there were "no new cases" to be concerned about. Of course, Liverpool are still without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Naby Keïta, Diogo Jota and Kostas Tsimikas. The good news...

Stop Playing Thiago As The 6, Liverpool

The medium to long term losses of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk and the continued inconsistencies in Joel Matip's fitness record doesn't only impact Liverpool in defence. Of course, regularly not having three defenders of that calibre is harmful to a team's prospects of keeping clean sheets. But it's the Reds' midfield that has...

Are Liverpool just unlucky?

Remember during the first couple of seasons under Jurgen Klopp, when Liverpool would perform well, but an individual mistake would cost them? I’m talking about Alberto Moreno against Sevilla in the Europa League final, Simon Mignolet in the Carabao Cup final, Dejan Lovren on multiple occasions, and Loris Karius in the Champions League final. This...

Liverpool & Their Horses For Courses Centre Halves

Defeat at Old Trafford, but at last reason to be optimistic. Going forward, Liverpool started to tick again. Having been benched in midweek, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino responded commendably.
