Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back with another episode of Scouser Tommies, the first one since Virgil Van Dijk lifted the 20th League Title for the Reds in front of a packed Anfield.. It’s been a while, but Jay has been busy, to be fair. And whilst he had extra special reasons to celebrate, the whole city has been in a party mood for quite some time now. (Not quite the whole city, of course; some isolated areas haven’t had a sniff of a title party for 30 years now!) On this week’s show, Jim and Jay look back on that momentous day when Virgil lifted that trophy, the iconic image of the skipper holding that shiny chunk of silver aloft that will live long in the memory. They also touch on the contrasting feelings that came out of that victory parade, a day that had been filled with pride as countless Reds made the pilgrimage to see their kings, celebrating in typical good humor, before the horrific scenes that, as awful as they were, thankfully—miraculously—weren’t as bad as we all feared they would be. The response, too, from those in the city, the offers of help, said so much about the true Liverpool. With a certain former Liverpool player swapping his No. 66 for the shirt usually worn by the sub before squad numbers came in, Jay and Jim look at how the feelings have started to change from those who were critical of the reception the player got from the fans he claims he loves. More and more see just why that reception was deserved. He’s not the first, he won’t be the last, but as Jim and Jay discuss, he’s done it in the worst possible way and ensured he won’t be remembered in the same way as some of those true legends whose names grace the official LFC museum—long after their boots were hung up for the last time. From tears in front of the Sky cameras to showing off the kind of fluent Spanish you don’t pick up overnight, it’s been quite the planned departure. More important than any of that is the fact that Liverpool have some new faces on the way in, the club showing true intent this summer to ensure Arne Slot has what he needs to turn one league title into a period of sustained success. Jay and Jim look at the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, a direct and exciting replacement for that player who’s just left. Most exciting of all is the impending record transfer of Florian Wirtz, Frimpong’s Leverkusen teammate, and Jay explains just how popular that player is amongst his own countrymen. Those signings, along with the likely arrival of Milos Kerkez, are a massive statement of intent from the champions. Isn’t it nice saying, “The Champions”, by the way? The hosts talk about how last season was basically a "test run" for Arne and wonder just how he’s going to fare when he gets his hands on the players he’s had a hand in signing himself. Last season was just the beginning; will we see a new style of play in the next campaign? Will these new signings allow him to truly stamp his authority on the team's style? To wrap things up, there’s a moment for Jay and Jim to point out some social media posts that caught their eyes, with an old face who’s still not welcome in isolated parts of the city, and a post from Liverpool Airport that really put a certain ex-player in his place. Sturridge, Firmino and Coutinho – Opponents Should Fear Us

"Where are the goals going to come from?" was probably amongst the top five questions Liverpool fans have asked in 2015. It's not like there wasn't cause for concern either, saying the Reds looked blunt up front would've been polite. The toothless attack is a mixture of Daniel Sturridge having shares in the injury...

Bringing The Belief Back

"After the goal on 82 minutes, with 12 minutes to go, I saw many people leaving the stadium. I felt pretty alone in this moment." Jurgen Klopp's words after Liverpool lost to Crystal Palace just before the international break. We are now just over six weeks into his reign as Liverpool manager and how we have...

Liverpool’s Midfield – The Heart of the Team, in Need of a Defibrillator!

Editor's note: This article was written prior to Liverpool's win against Manchester City at Etihad on Saturday I've always believed that the competitive games are won and lost, by the battle in midfield. It's the area of a team so influential to the style, tempo, control and competitiveness of a team. A good midfield will...

Chaos-Kitchen: Shooting-up the Table

Delicate. Intricate. Profligate. Manchester City's candy-cane tower has come crumbling down. Forget City's Soufflé-style of calculated luxury: we've entered Jürgen's Black Forest Gateau of Mayhem. High-class  pomp has been decimated by working-class passion as the Moneyball-marauding FSG out-bought City's billions in all areas. On sponsors alone, Liverpool's Subway, Gatorade and Dunkin' Donuts deals dwarf against the likes of City's Nike, Aabar and Etihad...

Man City 1 Liverpool 4 – Observations from the huge win!

Resounding. Frightful. Adjectives you don't usually see used for an away side at the Etihad in a positive manner. Liverpool bucked the trend. I have seen many compare the mauling of Manchester City to the dismantling of Chelsea a few weeks back. On the surface of course there are similarities. Liverpool turn up in somebody...

Manchester City 1 Liverpool 4: Player Ratings

Liverpool turned in a Klopp-terclass performance away from the home, at the home of a real top team. The team put in a performance which conveyed the view that they are beginning to absorb the vision of the new manager. Good times ahead ahoy!  Simon Mignolet (6.5) - Simon had a really straight forward game,...

We Are Liverpool, Tra’ La’ La’ La’ La’

Don’t deny it, you felt it too. Amidst all the delirium, the chaotic and synergetic euphoria of having Jürgen Klopp traipse around the halls of Melwood in his Liverbird encrusted tracksuit, the bitter disappointment of his first home loss to Crystal Palace brought a lot of the Reds' faithful down to earth, for a brief...

Manchester City Vs Liverpool Preview | Tactics, Team News & Stats

Liverpool suffered defeat against Crystal Palace, at Anfield, followed by a two week international break, so what is the ideal match to follow that? Erm, not Manchester City away. And yet, it might be ideal -  as expectations will be low, some of the Reds' key players have had time to rest and train,...

How To Get The Best Out Of: Dejan Lovren

Anger, bitterness, sadness. Just three emotions that greeted the majority of fans when it was announced that our beloved Mamadou Sakho would be out for around eight weeks, ruling the Frenchman out until the new year. However, these were only mild emotions, when compared to those when the fanbase realised who will most likely...

Klopp vs Rodgers – What’s Changed So Far?

It feels odd for me to write this but Jurgen Klopp's appointment as Liverpool manager wasn't welcomed by everybody. Some fans still felt Brendan Rodgers had it in him to turn it around. The media and pundits, well they didn't welcome a foreign coach replacing a 'bright, young, British talent" at a historically big...

Playing Favourites – Who’s Your Liverpool Hero?

“He's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now.” James Gordon, The Dark Knight Rises “I'm normally not a praying man, but if you're up there, please save me Superman.” Homer Simpson Favouritism, in this politically correct world obsessed with always presenting a veneer of egalitarianism, can be a bit of a dirty word....

How to Tactically Get The Best Out of Jordan Henderson

Jordan Henderson's impending return has been greeted with open arms by a large part of the Liverpool fan base. The captain has been missing since the 1-0 victory against Bournemouth way back in the second match of the season and during his extended absence his importance to the team has grown by the week....

Klopp, Comparisons to Spurs and Starting Afresh

When one hears the terms ‘spineless’, ‘bottlers’ and ‘fucking hilarious’, the only thing that could and should immediately spring to mind is the universal sign for ‘slap yourself in the face, kick yourself in the crotch’ style comedy… Tottenham Hotspur. The token orange in your Christmas stocking, a milk-less bowl of own brand cereal,...

Liverpool Fans Are Boss At The Blame Game

It’s natural for football fans to lash out after a defeat, you lose all sense of rational thought and blaming an official or an opposition player often makes the bitter pill of a loss easier to swallow. It’s like you need some closure from the game, you’ve lost, blame someone and move on till...

Milner’s role has changed at Liverpool – for the better

When James Milner’s arrival was announced almost half a year ago, there was a general acceptance that both Liverpool and Milner had struck an excellent deal, at the expense of Manchester City who had lost both an excellent player who was immensely loved by the fans, but crucially a player who both made up...

How Are Liverpool’s New Kids On The Block Faring?

A third of the 2015/16 season has already passed, but it’s been a topsy-turvy three months for Liverpool. We’ve seen a change of manager, rumours of Steven Gerrard’s return and an injury-ravaged squad which would make Abou Diaby and Darren Anderton feel at home. Among those to have been sidelined are some of the eight...

Jordan Henderson | Return of the unsung hero

Not so long ago, he was the butt of many an opposition fan and a few too many journalists as well; sometimes even sections of our own fans. Moving to England’s most successful club is a lot of pressure for any player, let alone as a 20 year old with a £16m price tag...

Tactical Flexibility: Klopp’s and Rodgers’

Jürgen Klopp was showered with praise on his arrival at Liverpool Football Club. The charismatic former Borussia Dortmund and Mainz 05 coach was lauded for his compelling style of football and infectious enthusiasm for the game. Despite the generally buoyant reception, there were - perhaps sensibly - some commentators who warned that the man isn't...

Fan Fiction – Understanding The Anfield Atmosphere

The current debate over the lack of atmosphere at Anfield has reignited a tiresome argument about the validity of the support offered by different types of fans. Frankly, it’s an extremely tedious contretemps, and it merely highlights the depressing reality that some pugnacious elements of our fan base seem to revel more in petty...

Sakho – The Parisian titan’s injury couldn’t be crueller

rIt has been clear to Liverpool fans for a while that Mamadou Sakho is an absolute titan of a man. He shows a passion for the club that scousers can identify with, but more than that he is the complete modern centre-half. He is comfortable getting tight on strikers, stepping up and defending on...

Should Liverpool Replace Simon Mignolet?

The average sandwich Liverpool have many recurring problems that previous management failed to address. As a team we're grossly misbalanced. Many frailties have been overlooked. We're buying potential and not supporting them with talented players, instead we're heaping the pressure on their shoulders and asking them to do something special. Average, functional players sandwiched in-between...

Time for Firmino to chip in at Anfield

These are interesting times for Liverpool fans. Still waiting for that elusive Premier League title, it is over three years since they captured even the League Cup under Kenny Dalglish, and as such, it's probably safe to assume that the club are suffering from a loss of identity. Long-accustomed to winning trophies virtually at will,...

No Divine Right To The Top Four, But That’s Okay

Jurgen Klopp tried his best to blow away his statement on fans leaving early on Sunday evening. Little did he know that he had addressed an elephant in the room that's been sitting there since he arrived, waiting for the bubble to burst. A fair portion of our fan base remains stuck in the euphoria...

Klopp, Atmosphere and Fans Leaving Early

"The goal was on 82 minutes - 12 minutes to go - and I saw many people leaving the stadium. I felt pretty alone in that moment. Between 82 and 94 minutes, you can make 8 goals if you want and we have to work for it." Jurgen Klopp has only been here for a...

Liverpool and the lack of quality goals conceded

I know it sounds like an odd title. Of course any goal conceded is a bad goal but my disappointment and anger subsides when a goal is of good quality. The sort that annoys you even more because you can't even moan it's that good. You're left speechless and quietly impressed by it.  The...

Joe Allen: From Xavi to Iniesta

Pirlo hair. Alonso beard. Welcome to the 5ft 6 enigma that is Joe Allen. Arriving at Liverpool FC three years ago, he was hailed as our catalyst for the tiki-taka, death-by-football programme. Now, he is viewed with – at best – indifference or – at worst – contempt. What happened? Over the last three seasons a culmination of...

Why it’s so obvious that Sturridge has no place at Liverpool

There's a heated debate raging throughout Liverpool fandom at the moment. Now that Jurgen Klopp is here, you could easily make the mistake of thinking that we had put our differences behind us. Don't be silly! There's always something bubbling under the surface. That's part of the beauty of being a football fan. Where...
