SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. See Us Home, Kolo Lad

What’s your favourite funny sight in football? For me, it always used to be the keeper getting sent off. There’s the hilarity of an outfield player having to go in goal and we are treated to the joy of the massively oversized shirt, the big flapping gloves and, if the footballing Gods are smiling upon us,...

Liverpool Launch 2014-15 Home Kit!

Liverpool FC launched their brand new 2014-15 Home kit with 1,000 supporters present for the launch. Jordan Henderson, Kolo Toure, Philippe Coutinho and Simon Mignolet were the models for the event! A picture of Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is included below - and in our opinion there is too much white on the shirt. Had...

Brendan Rodgers and the Counter Narratives

From the first moment Brendan Rodgers was appointed as the new manager of Liverpool Football Club, fans angry with FSG for sacking a club legend couldn't wait to see him fail. First, his team played too many passes sideways. Then, Rodgers was ‘too idealistic’. He talked too much, had no Plan B and up...

Liverpool FC: Following the Dortmund Model into Europe

Back to the Holy Land It’s that time of year again isn’t it? That annoying period in a season where every player, manager, pundit and fan peddles out the most irksome of cliché’s in the game: “if you offered me this position we’re in right now at the start of the season, I’d have bit...

Countera-TikiTaka: The New Liverpool Way

"The front three have pace, power, movement, and I would say Liverpool might be one of the best counter-attacking teams in Europe at the moment.   "The way they suck teams in and just break on them. They run at every opportunity, so you have got to be aware of that. "I admire the football they...

Pressure? What Pressure?

We will, no doubt, hear a lot of rubbish about ‘pressure’ over the coming weeks. If the popular media narrative is to be believed, Liverpool will crumble/succumb/collapse under the ‘pressure’ and falter in the title race. But why? Will players who have swept all before them in recent months open the paper one morning , glance at...

Steven Gerrard and The Missing Page in Liverpool’s Scrapbook

As I write this Liverpool Football Club sit proudly at the top of the Premier League table and for want of a more suitable phrase ‘this shit just got real’. Of course there’s a legion of old-timer Kopites who have seen all this a dozen times or more, but similarly there is a whole generation...

Raheem Sterling – A Wing and a Player

Brendan Rodgers once spoke of his reluctance to give a young player a lucrative contract early in their career. The thinking behind this is that the natural hunger for the game which players possess at this age, can transform into a hunger for their next pay packet or bonus, and have an adverse effect...

April 1964: 50 Years On, Liverpool Seek to Relive the Past

As Liverpool FC take the field to take on Spurs on March 30th it will be exactly 50 years to the day since they also faced their North London opponents on the same patch of green Anfield turf. Back in 1964, The Beatles were number one in the charts with Can't Buy Me Love and...

Liverpool FC – They’ve Got The Balls!

As a 34 year old Liverpool fan with a dodgy ticker, the last few years have been relatively easy to get through, stress wise. We haven't been that great and we haven't had much to play for at the business end of the season. Sure we've had times where we've played well and yes, we've...

Liverpool 2 Sunderland 1 | In-Depth Tactical Analysis

Liverpool continued in the 4-3-1-2 diamond-type shape from the last three matches. Coutinho remained at the tip with Allen and Henderson playing as the shuttlers outside of  Gerrard. Possibly the best way to describe the shape Poyet played was a 5-2-1-2. Bridcutt and Cattermole played as defensive midfielders in front of the backline and Giaccherini...

Why has 89 replaced 63 as Liverpool’s new Magic Number?

Neil Poole explains the significance of the number 63 in Liverpool’s recent history and why 89 is now the new number on the block. The complete irrelevance of the number 63 in the world is quite startling. At best, it’s the year that Joseph of Arimathea went to Glastonbury on the first Christian mission to...

Relax against Liverpool? All the best!

‘Relax!’ ‘Guys, RELAX!’ screamed Ole Gunner Solskjaer as his team lead Liverpool 2-1. The Cardiff manager was visibly distressed at seeing his defence crumble with a mazy run into the box by Daniel Sturridge. The move eventually breaking down, the fear, however, remained. ‘Relax’ he pleaded, ‘Relax’. Alas it was too late. For the Cardiff players...

Brendan Rodgers and the rebirth of Steven Gerrard

At a time where many of us are patting ourselves on the back and saying, "I told you Brendan Rodgers was the man for us" and watching in admiration at how he is helping return us to our perch, I feel it is only right that I hold my hands up and admit to...

The Epic Season of 13/14 | The Story So Far for Liverpool FC

"Can't believe this; same old story again.", Cried from the crowd before Jon Walter's pen, "He's goin' to score, this season is shit, 'Look at the bald Evertonian tit." "Come on Simon, let us see what you're worth! 'Prove to us Reds that you're made for the shirt," The crowd became tense, and the scene was set, Arses in ribbons, heads...

Liverpool FC’s Diamond Formation: An Analysis

How very interesting it was to sit down and watch Manchester United in Champions League action against Olympiacos, putting in a much better performance than that of three days previously against Liverpool (you know, the one in which we won 3-0? Remember that? Vaguely?). After their midfielders got bypassed and played through by Liverpool, they...
