SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Faux Forwards and False Expectations

Aside from the strange machinations of Adenor Leonardo Bacchi, otherwise known as Tite, we are all generally aware of the value of Roberto Firmino at this point. Brazil was boring with Jesus, boisterous with Bobby, and ultimately the exclusion of the Reds' frontman would prove to be their undoing. Back on Merseyside, Bobby Firmino has...

Why Liverpool Can Win The League (Redux)

Last summer I wrote a piece on how I thought it was possible Liverpool could win the Premier League title. I felt most of the points that I made in that article were largely valid, although of course things didn’t pan out the way we hoped. Overall, the lack of a centre-back signing, Phil...

Why Liverpool need to do the right thing and take Karius out of the spotlight

Martin Luther King once said that “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”. He could very well have been talking about Loris Karius after the Champions League final. It is the biggest games that will test the...

Has Klopp built a stronger back-up squad to the XI he inherited?

This summer's been a bit of a whirlwind, hasn't it? We've had the highs and lows of England's World Cup campaign, with ironic jeers of 'it's coming home' appearing more and more realistic as the Three Lions reached the semi-final. The dramatic use of VAR to keep pulses racing as modern technology enlarges its...

Errors – The Worst Currency for a Goalie

So I like stats. I’m an unabashed stats lover. Whenever I can I write using stats, about stats or using stats in my articles. One of the benefits of being in an LFC community is that there are people who are smarter than me on Twitter who occasionally post interesting stats. This is one...

The Karius Conundrum

Liverpool have made huge strides under Jurgen Klopp on and off the pitch; the German’s infectious touchline antics have fuelled a strong feeling of togetherness between the fans and players. Then there’s the enhanced decision making in the transfer window, the cohesion between Michael Edwards and Klopp and a surge of optimism that this...

Dejan Lovren: Chutzpah or Chump?

It’s Friday afternoon as I write this and the World Cup is all but over. On the whole, it’s been a triumph. The home nation’s journey to the quarter-finals have made it interesting domestically – ever the hallmark of a good World Cup – and the introduction of VAR have kept all but the usual...

Jürgen Klopp’s Midfield Minefield: Getting the Balance Right

Jürgen Klopp has a bit of a dilemma on his hands. And for once, it's not a bad one (well, at least not where his midfield is concerned). The arrivals of Keita, Fabinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Wijnaldum in the central midfield area, along with the stalwarts of Henderson and Milner have given the Reds boss a...

Dejan Lovren: Immense Self-Belief or Just Unnecessary Hubris?

"From my point of view, people said I had a difficult season but I don't agree. "I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League. Now with my national team, we are in the final. "I think people should recognise that I am also one of the best defenders in the world and not just...

When – and Where – Will We See Woodburn?

Ben Woodburn is a player that all Reds fans are heavily invested in. The Wales international burst onto the scene back in 2016, after some impressive performances in pre-season. In November of the same year, Woodburn made his Reds debut against Sunderland, becoming the clubs third youngest debutant. Three days later Woodburn scored his...

Xherdone – Shaqiri is a Red

So Xherdan Shaqiri is a Liverpool player. This has been one that has threatened to run for most of the window, but in the end, LFC wrapped it up with little fuss and little mess, courtesy of a £13m release clause in his contract after Stoke were relegated from the Premier League last season. It’s...

Xherdan Shaqiri: A Multi-Faceted Low Risk, High Reward Buy

With England now out of the World Cup and the impending realisation that football will in fact not be coming home, attentions will return to the summer transfer window with fans desperate for further incomings. Naby Keita and Fabinho drew widespread optimism amongst Liverpool fans, enhancing belief that Klopp can secure his first piece of...

Why Not Shaqiri?

Ever since Liverpool were first linked with Xherdan Shaqiri, I have found myself one of a large portion of Liverpool fans who were at once disappointed with and confused by the prospective signing of the Swiss international. Six years ago this would have been an exciting signing, with Shaqiri the prospect in high demand...

The FSG Spending Myth

With Liverpool in the middle of a critically important transfer window (aren’t they always?), it seems like a perfect time to revisit a recurring myth amongst the Liverpool fanbase: FSG refuse to spend the money to compete for trophies. As an American Liverpool fan, I scoff at the notion that Fenway Sports Group is...

Two Beaches, One Red Bum? LFC’s World Cup Summers

Four weeks remain until the transfer window slams shut and Liverpool have added one senior player. One. Is it time to panic or is this just business as usual during a World Cup summer? The only logical thing to do, painful as it may be, is to get in the way-back machine turn the...

Harry Wilson Threatening to Find Another Level at Liverpool

Saturday’s pre-season opener away to Chester was meant to be all about Naby Keita and Fabinho making their Liverpool debuts, but two others made the headlines. Daniel Sturridge showed us that there is enduring class in his boots, scoring twice before hinting on social media that his work at Anfield may not be done just...

Liverpool’s Fringe Players – to Keep or Not to Keep?

For managers, major international tournaments mean disruption, with big players late to return after fulfilling their international commitments. But for fringe players, disruption means opportunity. Many of Liverpool’s stars, including each member of their revered front three, remain in Russia or are enjoying some well-earned time-off after an early exit. Jurgen Klopp has been forced,...

To the Left, to the Left, All of LFC’s Money in a Box to the Left

It was obvious to close observers last summer, even before all of the pieces were moved around Jurgen Klopp's chess board, that Liverpool were short an attacker. More specifically, the Reds could have done with a left-sided forward in order to complete the ultimate rotation. When Liverpool can assemble their preferred starting eleven, it's an...

Sadio Mané – Still Liverpool’s Main Man(é)?

Sadio Mané has been an absolutely integral player to Liverpool since his move to the club two summers ago. Across two seasons, Mané has started 54 games for the club in the Premier League, scoring 23 goals and notching 12 assists, not to mention his double-digit Champions League season for the Reds as they...

Injuries are Liverpool’s Achilles Heel to Success

Liverpool came so desperately close to winning the Champions League last season but they suffered injuries at key times. Jurgen Klopp and his team had managed the minutes and playing time of the players exceptionally, but you couldn’t help feeling that a couple more quality squad players could have helped LFC over the line....

Assessing Liverpool’s Youth Players: Who Deserves their Chance?

As Liverpool return to pre-season, the return of Pepijn Lijnders also marks a renewed optimism for Liverpool’s youth prospects: Ben Woodburn and Trent-Alexander Arnold both speak highly of their experience under the man many assume will take up the mantle of outgoing assistant Zeljko Buvac. With that re-appointment comes a voice in Klopp’s ear:...

What’s Next For Liverpool’s Strikers?

Roberto Firmino is Jürgen Klopp's go-to striker, in his strongest XI. However, the German is faced with issues when Firmino is unavailable, or being rested - who replaces Firmino? Last season Klopp relied heavily on Dominic Solanke as back-up for the Brazil international, and as the season reached it's close Danny Ings got more game...

Why Jürgen Klopp’s Faith in Loris Karius Shouldn’t Worry Us

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp came out in defence of much-maligned keeper Loris Karius this week, stating that the young German keeper was "100%" affected by a concussion during his Champions League Final horror show in May. Klopp gave Karius his public support and stated that he remains as Liverpool's first choice keeper as things stand. Now,...

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: Worth the Wait

It's still yet to be a year since the day Liverpool signed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal for £40 million. On the day he left, Arsenal fans had mixed emotions; on one hand, a fan favourite with undeniable talent had left, and that was a shame, but considering his ambitions to play in centre midfield,...

New Season, Same Reds: Liverpool 7 – 0 Chester FC

Liverpool got the 2018/19 season underway with familiar flair, putting the National League side away with ease. Last season’s heroes returned. Some familiar faces came home and a few new ones took their Liverpool bow. Here are the observations from the match. WILSON vs OJO Jurgen Klopp blamed a slow start on his usual nemesis, the dry...

Chelsea’s Academy: The Gift that keeps on giving… to Liverpool

Is it the red-headed stepchild, the rented mule, the red-headed mule…? Whatever analogy you choose, Liverpool keep going back window after window to raid Chelsea’s academy for standout stars anxious for first-team opportunities. The London club has been fantastic at recruiting and developing talent to a certain level and has, for all intents and purposes,...

The Curious Case of John Arne Riise

Last week, Leanne Prescott, AnfieldIndex's impish commentator, and I had an email exchange about the changing role of the fullback. Her argument - and it’s one I have no great issue with – is that the modern-day full-back spends as much time in the opponents half as his own. Gone are the days when the...

Liverpool’s Pre-Season – Five Things to Keep an Eye On

Ever since Jurgen Klopp was appointed Liverpool manager he has stressed the importance of having time with his squad on the training pitch. With pre-season being the ideal opportunity for the German to set-out his masterplan for the forthcoming season, let's take a look at five areas we should be keeping a close eye on...

The Hard Task Of Replacing Loris Karius

The Champions League final has just finished. Loris Karius walks to Liverpool supporters in tears and apologises for a catastrophic performance, in the last 45 minutes his mistakes allowed Real Madrid to comfortably beat Jurgen Klopp’s side. The dream of conquering Europe is over. For many Liverpool supporters, these scenes seem to still define German...

Dominic Solanke Needs a Championship Season

Liverpool FC’s first signing of the 2017 summer window left many supporters scratching their heads. Rumours of major incomings were being tossed all over social media, which made sense given the momentum that Jürgen Klopp was able to generate following the 2016-2017 season. The Reds were able to finish top-four in the EPL and...
