SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Liverpool 6 Watford 1: Player Ratings

LIVERPOOL TOP OF THE LEAGUE POETRY IN MOTION WE SCORE WHEN WE WANT I HAVE NOTHING (MORE) TO SAY Loris Karius (7.5) - Pretty much trouble free first half for the German as Watford struggled to create any threatening chances. He looked eager to initiate quick counter-attacks whenever possible. Karius was far more involved in the second half and...

What Does Michael Edwards’ Promotion mean for Liverpool FC?

Just over a year ago, not long after Brendan Rodgers was sacked, the Daily Mail published an article hatchet job depicting Liverpool FC's head of performance analysis Michael Edwards as a kiss-arse who basically set Rodgers up to fail. There was mention of a cosy relationship between Edwards and the owners and how they'd regularly...

Liverpool are still a work in progress

The start to this season has been very positive for Liverpool - Jürgen Klopp's men are level on points with Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the Premier League; the football is entertaining and confidence is high. It's too early to get over excited, but things are looking up at Anfield and...

Liverpool v Watford: Key Battles

Liverpool are riding high. The win at Selhurst Park would have only increased spirits in what already looked like a happy camp. Jurgen Klopp has well and truly put his stamp on this side and these are happy times at Anfield. But as Klopp said after the Palace game, we still make childish mistakes...

Where is the praise for Liverpool’s transfer committee?

In English football there has always been an aversion to ‘the continental model’ of football management. The likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Bill Shankley were such enduring individuals at their clubs that the successes of their teams have been attributed to the all powerful men that ruled them. The great managers of English...

Liverpool Analytics: Packing Against Crystal Palace

Well it's midweek after yet another confident Liverpool win, and the dust from the match has settled. After watching the match I remembered that back at the beginning of the season I'd thought about doing a weekly analytics article talking about each week's match. I wanted the articles to be about the types of...

A Look at Liverpool Target Sead Kolasinac

According to German publication Bild, Liverpool have reignited their interest in left-back Sead Kolasinac with a view to signing the Schalke player on a pre-contract deal in January. Kolasinac was linked with a move to Anfield last season at various stages but nothing materialised. However, with the player's contract status he now looks like an...

Coutinho & Firmino: Majestic Brazilians Bringing The Good Times Back

There was a time during the Roy Hodgson era when the thought of Liverpool having two dazzling Brazilians in their ranks felt little more than a pipe dream. Any flair that once existed at the club had ebbed away. We were having to put up with a years-past-his-peak Joe Cole, the dullest footballer in history...

Tactics: Liverpool’s Attacking Fluidity Overwhelms Palace’s Defensive Unit

As we approach the beginning of November you can start to see the Premier League table take shape. The early weeks of the season are spent with teams striving to find their feet and deal with any lingering fitness or personnel issues. As the season progresses though form starts to take hold and teams...

Jurgen’s Plan B Sticking To Plan A

Disclaimer- Despite the positive performance and result using our second string side against Spurs last Tuesday, I am aware that we did beat a Spurs reserve team who have an eye and a half on the Champions League and these boys will face up to tougher opponents. During Mauricio Pochettinos post-match press conference after Liverpool's EFL...

Did a tactical tweak help Liverpool beat Palace?

Liverpool's victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday evening was a bit of a whirlwind performance. It highlighted the very best of Jurgen Klopp's revamped Reds side whilst simultaneously exposing to the world their glaring frailties. At times it almost felt like Liverpool's attack versus their defence. It had a 2013/14 sort of feel to...

Sturridge Has a Place in the Team, But He Might Not Like It

I think I’ve pointed out in the past that I love this man. Daniel Sturridge, in my opinion, is the most natural finisher England have got. Forget Harry Kane, forget Jamie Vardy, forget Marcus Rashford. Sturridge is the best finisher of the lot. Those three all have their qualities but none can quite stick the...

“El Pistolero”: Luis Suárez’s Ascent To Fame At Liverpool

January 31, 2011, it's Deadline Day of the latest winter transfer window in Europe, and rumours of a possible Fernando Torres sale swirl about Merseyside. The club, sitting in lowly 12th place in the Premier League table, was struggling to cope with life post-Rafa Benitez; straying further away from England's upper-class. In search of...

Why we owe Steven Gerrard his return

Liverpool legend deserves a return to Anfield despite mixed opinions. Sunken to his knees, staring into the abyss of Selhurst Park, Steven Gerrard knew it was over. His dream of lifting the Premier League title with Liverpool, had disappeared faster than he fell to allow Demba Ba THAT goal the previous week. “Devastation” was the word Gerrard...

Observations from Liverpool’s win at Crystal Palace

It was billed as Benteke v Liverpool; the striker’s first game against his former club after his ill-fated move to Anfield lasted just one season. As it transpired, he was nearly as peripheral here as he was for his former club, despite Palace scoring from crosses. Instead, this was a game that emphasised both...

Crystal Palace 2 Liverpool 4: Player Ratings

Liverpool oscillated between brilliance and haphazard defending as they came away with the spoils in a high scoring game at Crystal Palace. Four goals yet again from this free scoring attack as well as defensive naivety from a clueless defence. This is how the Reds fared. Loris Karius (6) - Karius must be wondering how unjust this...

Crystal Palace v Liverpool – Key Battles to watch out for

Selhurst Park has not been a great place for Liverpool to visit recently. Although Liverpool did win there last season, courtesy a late Christian Benteke penalty, it is fair to say that Crystal Palace have been Liverpool's bogey team in the past few seasons. On Saturday, the Reds head to London full of confidence, having dumped Spurs...

Will Benteke Bewitch the Reds? | Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Preview

Crystal Palace present the next test for Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool on Saturday, with the Reds hoping to well and truly banish the ghosts of previous matches against Palace as Halloween approaches. The Reds will be looking to stretch their unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 games, and a win in London would only strengthen...

Crystal Palace Preview | Lowdown on the Eagles

So, it’s Crystal Palace at the weekend. The Eagles from SE25. Palace are a strange club, or, at least, we have a strange relationship with them. There’s no confident prediction about our games with them. They bloody our noses from time to time and we batter them back. Give us a non-descript game and we...

What has been Liverpool’s Goal of 2016/17 so far?

When recently asked about his favourite Liverpool goal of the season to date, Jurgen Klopp admitted there were several contenders in his eyes. “There have been a lot of nice goals ,” he said. “Sadio’s goal at Arsenal was not too bad, especially when I saw it after the game when I saw the movement he...

Tactics – A look at Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Debut for Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold made his competitive first-team debut for Liverpool in the win against Spurs. It's been long overdue for a player who impressed during pre-season with his fearless performances. He was expressive in his play, the way that many youngsters are when they get their chance in the first-team. It's a combination of confidence and...

Tactical Analysis – Liverpool break down deep defensive block

It is a sign of the positive start to the season from Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool that a 0-0 draw away to Manchester United is tinged with disappointment. Such has been the attacking impetus from Liverpool so far this season that there is a genuine belief that they can score at any given moment and...

Liverpool’s Achilles Heel – Set Piece Woes

Jurgen Klopp was right when he said Liverpool don't have a defensive issue. In the 12 months he's been with the club he's worked on making Liverpool, as a unit, much more resilient. For starters there are less holes centrally, you rarely see the backline exposed like you did under Brendan Rodgers. The team...

Jürgen’s Marauders: Getting Liverpool an 80-Goal Season

Liverpool Football club isn’t for the faint of hearted. The evidence is there; between Istanbul, the now infamous games against Dortmund and Villarreal, and even that fateful night in Basel when the lights shone down on Klopp’s tenure and left Liverpool in a puddle of despair. Every game is a new cardiac examination of one’s...

Observations from Liverpool’s the win against Spurs

The win against Spurs means Liverpool are not only through to the next round of the EFL Cup, they're also now undefeated in 10 matches in all competitions. It was a completely different Liverpool to the side that beat WBA on Saturday with Klopp making eleven changes. Not only were the personnel different but so too...

Liverpool 2 Spurs 1 – Player Ratings

The last cup-tie we had, the player ratings piece here was different. Tonight, Sam McGuire is not on duty, and I am going to leave the novelties to him. In truth, it was a stunning game at Anfield. The fringe players responded to Jurgen Klopp's decision to put his faith in them by turning in a...

Tactics – A look at Emre Can’s New Role

Jurgen Klopp's at it again, isn't he? There's outside the box and then there's Jurgen Klopp levels of outside of the box. Just when you start to scratch your head and question the logic behind it all it clicks into place and you feel stupid yourself for not seeing it originally. Adam Lallana as a box-to-box midfielder...

Time for Studge to budge from Liverpool

Before I get started on this article, let’s get a few things out of the way. I’m a big fan of Daniel Sturridge; I think he’s one of the league’s best finishers and can be a world beater on his day. Secondly, this is my opinion. As Henry Jackson touched upon in his piece for Anfield...
