Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Liverpool 3-0 Southampton: Early excitement helps Reds to win

Liverpool’s 100% start to the 2018/19 season continued at Anfield with a comfortable win over Southampton. An early Wesley Hoedt own goal was followed in by goals from Joel Matip and Mohamed Salah, a first-half demolition securing three more points for the Reds. There was a sense of intrigue on L4 as manager Jurgen Klopp handed...

Liverpool returned to the tip of the Premier League table at the weekend, coasting to a routine 3-0 win against Southampton. Here are the ratings from the match. Alisson: 6 Produced a decent save from Charlie Austin’s late effort but otherwise untroubled. Hard to find many things to complain about and the fact he’s away from the...

Liverpool v Southampton Preview – Key Battles

After a successful start to their UEFA Champions League campaign on Tuesday night, Liverpool are back in Premier League action at Anfield, as they welcome Southampton on Saturday afternoon. Jurgen Klopp's men are on a high, having won their first five Premier League games, but know they can't afford to slip up on this...

Is Andy Robertson Europe’s Most In-Form Left-Back?

Trace your mind back about 14 months and a huge amount of trepidation surrounded Liverpool's acquisition of Andy Robertson. Alberto Moreno's hit-and-miss form had called for an upgrade at left-back, with plenty of exotic-sounding names across Europe touted as ideal replacements, such as the forever Liverpool-linked Ricardo Rodriguez. Instead, Jurgen Klopp opted to sign a scrawny-looking...

Deconstructing Steven Gerrard’s Start at Rangers

As Rangers fans celebrated luring Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard to Ibrox for a maiden senior management gig this summer, those at Anfield watched on with intrigued eyes. How would a man that had only experienced management at Youth Academy level fare when thrown in at the deep end, with limited funds, at a club where...

Stop Worrying About Mohamed Salah

Mo Salah has made a slightly below-par start to the season, and one that was exacerbated by his poor performance and misplaced pass that led to Mbappe’s equaliser in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over PSG on Tuesday night. But given that I am an unapologetic Mo Salah fan and have recently written articles saying that...

Observations as Firmino fires Liverpool to opening European win

And breathe. Liverpool are up and running in Europe once again by virtue of Roberto Firmino's last-gasp winner against PSG at Anfield. Three points that looked as if they'd been lost wrestled back by one moment of genius from the Brazilian - who needs more than one eye? Speaking of eyes, here's what I saw with...

Liverpool 3-2 PSG: Man of the Match

Just three days after beating one of the best sides in the Premier League, Liverpool underlined their European ambitions by comprehensively outplaying, and battling past, a member of the continental elite. After Mohamed Salah's frustrating evening took a nightmarish turn when he conceded possession in the middle of the park in the lead-up to PSG's...

Liverpool Left Back Andy Robertson Now Emerging as a Leader

Andy Robertson's journey to becoming Scotland skipper and an Anfield regular following in the footsteps of Tartan team icons like Alan Hansen and Kenny Dalglish is a curious one. Released by Celtic in his early teens for being too small, he's proved the Bhoys academy coaches completely wrong by forging a top-flight career on both sides of...

Liverpool 3-2 PSG: One-Eyed Firmino Makes His Mark

It’d be wrong to suggest this isn’t one of the toughest groups of the competition; Napoli and PSG present two scintillating trips while Red Star Belgrade are hardly pushovers having won the Serbian league last season. Under the floodlights, bouncing to the tune of ‘Allez Allez Allez’, Liverpool stepped out prepped and ready for...

Liverpool 3-2 PSG: Player Ratings as Bobby dazzles Anfield late

Liverpool made Anfield fret, but Liverpool had more late European drama at Anfield, as an injury time winner from Roberto Firmino gave the Reds a 3-2 win over Paris St. Germain and a winning start to their Champions League campaign. Daniel Sturridge's header and James Milner's penalty put the Reds on course, but Thomas Meunier...

The Firmino 9

Roberto Firmino was the perfect the false 9, then Klopp's number 9 and now the Firmino 9. Has Bobby redefined the centre-forward position for Liverpool during Klopp's tenure? When Liverpool signed Firmino from Hoffenheim, he was known as a goal scoring attacking midfield. Under Rodgers, he played as a wide forward and didn't appear to be...

Dominic Solanke – The Forgotten Cause

Dom Solanke is yet to even be named in the matchday squad this season. Having not played a game of football since pre-season, in which he did not particularly impress, this is only going to hinder the progress of the former Chelsea player. In his debut season he managed to score one goal in 21 appearances,...

Why football clubs are crazy about eSports?

Reel back a decade or two and nobody would have taken you seriously had you told them that electronic sports are going to be a multi-billion industry in 2018. Least of all serious, mainstream athletes. Playing competitive video games used to be the preserve of basement-dwelling riff-raff or social no-goods and wastrels. Now, these...

Integrating Fabinho and the Need for Patience

Patience isn’t a word that gets heeded much in the modern era of football. Instant gratification has been normalised and expected, and signings are often cast aside as “flops” in as short a space as six months. And that’s fine because some signings don’t work. But, if one casts their mind back to the final...

Tough UCL Group Presents Tough Choices For Klopp

Liverpool’s Champions League campaign kicks off on Tuesday, with the automatic qualification to the group stage giving the Reds some breathing room in the opening few weeks of the season to focus on the Premier League. Liverpool leave Spurs bewildered in London

Liverpool aren't technically top of the table, surpassed by Chelsea on goal difference as the sun goes down on this Premier League Saturday. The Reds are, however, undefeated, having only allowed two goals in five and eased past Spurs in London. Liverpool now have more away points against top-six opponents than they amassed in...

Spurs 1-2 Liverpool: Man of the Match

A late Tottenham Hotspur goal made for an unnecessarily nervy finish at Wembley, but the eventual 2-1 scoreline certainly belied Liverpool's dominance. The Reds were, for the most part, in control against one of the best teams in the Premier League. They were able to repel Spurs' relatively rare attacks and sliced open an oft-revered...

Player Ratings as Liverpool makes it five from five against Spurs

Last season saw Liverpool’s visit to Wembley bring about one of their worst performances. Riddled with individual errors and defensive ineptitude, Spurs were able to beat the Reds at their own game and put down a marker of how far Klopp still had to take his side. Yet, it was a role reversal on...

The Truth About Mohamed Salah’s “Poor” Start to the Season

After a long and drawn out transfer saga last summer, Mo Salah joined the Reds with much optimism surrounding the Egyptian’s arrival, but no one could predict what would happen as the season unfolded. He managed a record-breaking 32 goals in the Premier League alone, unsurprisingly winning the Golden Boot, as well as claiming the...

Pressure on Klopp to Rotate Liverpool’s Starting Eleven

Having made just one change to his Liverpool side in the opening four games, continuity in selection will soon have to change for Jurgen Klopp. The Reds have only been playing one game a week up until now which enabled Klopp to name an unchanged side for the first three league games. Jordan Henderson...
