Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Klopp, Liverpool, and How Emotion Conquered Perfection

Ah, the word “passion.” Somewhat overused in the day and age of exposition, Liverpool Football Club has something of a connection to the idea of pure, unadulterated passion in the vast landscape that is football. Everything is magnified tenfold, because of its relation to everything else in the football sphere. So, when people marry the word...

Liverpool and that Semi-final feeling again

When I watched Ryan Babel sprint past a tired Cesc Fabregas to finish off an incredible Champions League night, little did I know it was going to take me that long to experience that feeling again. That feeling! That feeling of being in the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League. That feeling is back again, thanks...

Observations as Liverpool Surge into Champions League Semi-Finals

An Ode to Liverpool’s Flying Full-Backs

It's been a remarkable season for Liverpool, who are likely to secure consecutive Champions League qualifications since 2007-08/08-09 and have had a fantastic run in the Champions League thus far. Instead of merely consolidating the club's top four position, there have been clear signs of improvement and development across both the club and the...

The Game That Time Will Forget | Everton 0 Liverpool 0

Last month saw the release of Tony Evans’ Two Tribes book. It looks at the 1985-86 season set against the backdrop of social and political turmoil in and around the city at the time. Everton Draw Exposes Liverpool’s Lack of Attacking Depth

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to point out that Dom Solanke and Danny Ings are not feasible replacements for Bobby Firmino and Mo Salah. And certainly, this observation has been met with choruses of sarcastic comments, both from within the Liverpool fandom and from wider football circles. But it’s nevertheless worth looking at,...

Observations as the Derby Ends in a Drab Stalemate

The Merseyside Derby ended in yet another dull stalemate as Liverpool and Everton played out a 0-0 draw. The result ensured that Liverpool stayed in the top 3 as they look forward to the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. The 'put-together' line up With one eye on the Champions League, and the mounting injury...

I Took A Nap – Key Stats from LFC 0-0 Everton

Liverpool made changes and were extremely lethargic as Everton held them to a 0-0 draw at Goodison Park. But what were the key stats from what was an incredibly boring affair? Snore Draw This was a game in which nobody really created a lot, with 0-0 probably the right scoreline. In terms of expected goals, Liverpool...

Everton 0 – 0 Liverpool: Derby Day Stalemate at Goodison

The Details Date: 7/4/2018 Venue: Goodison Park, Liverpool Background Due to Liverpool's progression in this season's Champions League, today's derby took a little step down in the list of priorities for Klopp and his team. Player Ratings as Liverpool’s Undefeated Derby Streak Continues

"Need someone to do the post-match player ratings" was the request from AI's supremo Gags Tandon. "Great!", I thought; after wallopping City, Liverpool look like they can trounce any team in the world right now, and this will be my chance to dish 10 ratings all round for perhaps the greatest derby mauling of...

Liverpool’s Centre-Backs – Consistently Inconsistent

What a game! There is nothing like a European night at Anfield. I was several thousand kilometres away and couldn't fall asleep all night, like a little kid, just buzzing. The attack and midfield will rightfully claim most of the glory but the defending in the second half was probably the Red's best display...

Franchise Tag: NFL’s rule, Football’s Dream?

As an American Red, I don't see a lot of Liverpool news, gossip and talk through popular sports media here in the U.S. I usually seek it out myself, leading me to major UK sports media like Sky, and the meatier local and fan-run sites and YouTube channels like RedmenTV and Anfield Index. While reading through...

The Return Of Anfield

“It’s there to remind our lads who they’re playing for and to remind the opposition who they’re playing against!” – Bill Shankly on the ‘This is Anfield’ sign. As you get older you start to hanker for the good times. You see everything that is new as a threat to what you hold in your...

Liverpool’s Young Full-backs Produce a Performance for the Ages

This time last year, imagine being told that Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson would be starring in a Champions League quarter-final for Liverpool. It would have felt ludicrous. The former was still an 18-year-old who had made just 10 appearances for the Reds, and a fully fit Nathaniel Clyne was a nailed-on starter. Nobody had him...

How Detrimental is Klopp’s Loyalty to Liverpool?

Despite possessing many qualities and being a world class manager our boss still has his weaknesses. Last week I talked about how Klopp has built a new identity for the club, transforming the way us as supporters and opposition fans now look at us. We're no longer a club who has to sell a...

Liverpool 3-0 Manchester City: A Tactical Breakdown

Fine lines. The thinnest of margins. The point at which dreamland meets bedlam. Where delirium bisects mayhem. That's where Liverpool fans found themselves as they watched the unthinkable happen. Liverpool had pressed Manchester City into submission in January, but Pep Guardiola, the greatest manager and tactical innovator of his generation would surely not let it...

Being a Liverpool Supporter – The Anxiety is Real

It's been 6 years since Liverpool last won a trophy, the League Cup under Kenny Dalglish in the 2011-12 season. And the previous trophy to that was the FA Cup in 2006. And it feels like approximately 408 years since we last won the league. So it's fair to say that Liverpool fans have...

Liverpool 3-0 City: We’re All Believers Now

Watching Liverpool put on a tactical masterclass against Pep Guardiola from a darkened discotheque in Barranquilla, Colombia where I'm visiting family, was something I’ll never forget. I celebrated goals over iced-beer with a bunch of local Liverpool supporters who don’t let distance or language stop them from supporting a club that has more “alma,”...

Player Ratings as Liverpool crush the Cityzens

That was unbelievable. Far and away Liverpool’s best display under Klopp. We’ve attacked better, yet scored three. There hasn’t been a better defensive display under the German. One foot into the semi-finals, surely? Score one at their place and they have to score five. Not rocket science is it, lads? Anyway, here’s me on player ratings...

Five Potential Liverpool Targets from Outside the Top Six

Liverpool’s race for Champions League football next season took a reassuring step as Spurs trounced Chelsea in their own yard on the weekend, giving the Reds breathing room in pursuit of that coveted top four spot. Ahead of a clash with Manchester City, too, one could very easily reflect on how far Klopp’s men...

Liverpool FC – European Royalty

This is it. The Quarter-finals. The big time. The European Cup. The draw was met by sighs when Andriy Shevchenko pulled out Man City to face us. And understandably so, as every supporter wants Liverpool to play the giants across the continent and show the rest of Europe what the team is about. The memories of trips...
