Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Case for Trusting Liverpool

Maybe it’s because it’s been a while getting here, but if you believe Twitter, every day is a bit of a meltdown at Liverpool during this year’s title race. I for one am being slightly cautious in this season’s race because it’s only just turned February. Sure, we’re clear at the top of the table,...

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is already looking to bolster his attacking options this summer with a big-money bid for Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne. According to the Italian publication, La Repubblica, Insigne could be tempted by the move to Anfield as the Napoli team which so nearly won the Serie A title under Maurizio Sarri last season...

Observations as Liverpool Struggle With the ‘Favourites’ Tag

As I start writing this piece post midnight to banish the memories of the game unsuccessfully, it is quite clear that Liverpool are heading into their biggest challenge yet this season. Liverpool dropped points for the second game in a row and one can surely feel the breath of Man City on the back...

West Ham 1-1 Liverpool: What Went Wrong?

Liverpool battled out another frustrating stalemate, recording a second successive 1-1 draw, this time against West Ham. Considered by some an opportunity scorned, enabling Manchester City a route back into the Premier League title race (although they were never really out of it were they) and others another point in a patch where the...

Title hopes Hammered as Liverpool draw 1-1 in London.

Player Ratings as Liverpool draw in London

Liverpool’s lead at the top is now just two points after another frustrating draw against West Ham. GOALKEEPER: Alisson 6 Carried no fault from the goal and did well dealing with everything else thrown at him. DEFENCE: James Milner 6 Struggles against Anderson as many expected him to do, lacking the pace of Trent Alexander Arnold but he did get...

Initially, the Liverpool medical staff felt Gomez would be fit to return to training in late January. However, the backroom team has now decided that the...

Should Liverpool Have Signed a Defender in January?

Well, yes. As it stands right now, Joe Gomez’s injury cloud has only darkened – perhaps turning into a dreaded storm cloud should his spell on the sidelines span further than Liverpool’s tie against Bayern Munich in February – and Liverpool are still without an actual right-back. All while still remaining firmly on top of the...

Liverpool 1-1 Leicester City: A Tactical Breakdown

With a number of injuries and a suspension to deal with, even after the team sheets were announced, it was unclear exactly how Liverpool would set up. Adam Lallana, What is the Point?

Seriously though, what is the point? You've read the title, you may or may not agree with the sentiment it offers but either way you're now expecting to read a piece of writing justifying whether or not there is actually any point in Liverpool's continual employment of their number 20. Yet here I sit, staring...

Red Rant – Klopp’s Gomez Error To Cost Liverpool?

Through these frigid few days, even pessimistic Liverpool supporters were reluctantly cosying up to the idea that The Reds, 5 points ahead with 14 matches to go, are the presumptive favourites to win their first title in the Premier League era. Turns out. We can’t have nice things. After beginning the season with what looked on...

Liverpool’s Race For The Title: The Pressure May Help

During the (admittedly very few) title races we’ve been involved in recently there’s been a lot of ‘they might drop points here!’ and ‘maybe we can make up the ground there!’ when looking towards our closest rivals. As if we’re sort of expecting it to happen and we’re counting on others to mess up,...

Key Points in Liverpool’s Title Challenge

It wasn't the result we were all hoping for against Leicester at Anfield. In the wake of an unexpected slip-up from City, the snowy, sub-zero Merseyside night presented a perfect opportunity for Liverpool to further freeze out their nearest title rivals by moving seven points clear at the top. It wasn't to be, and a 1-1...

Shaqiri Failing Test as Regular Starter for Liverpool

Liverpool were always going to drop points against a non-top-six side eventually, simply by the law of averages. To have almost reached February before succumbing to one of the Premier League's so-called 'lesser' outfits really is an achievement to be proud of. Think about how long ago August was and what you were doing back then....

Quiet Transfer Window Shows Reds’ Growth

I hate transfer windows. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. A solid third of the year – and that’s just when it’s open – dedicated to incessant droning about every player under the sun, consistent links and, worst of all, complaining about things that haven’t even happened yet. “Why on earth haven’t...
