SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Liverpool V Newcastle | Tactical & Stats Report – Prodigal Son Returns

The return of the prodigal son. What more can you say about Steven Gerrard. Back from a long term injury, comes on with 38 minutes left in the game, with the score at 1-1, and inspires the team to a 3-1 win. Steven Gerrard makes other players play well. To tweak a line from...

The Stats Behind Shooting & Creativity for Liverpool FC

It's the same old story once again for Liverpool FC. Inconsistency once again proved to be Liverpool FC's failing as they dropped points against two clubs that they really should beat. Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers are two sides that you'd have bet on for Liverpool FC to come away with three points, especially...

Luis Suarez Smear campaign in full flow | More Evidence

UPDATE: Sky have now announced Suarez as the winner of the 2011 Goals on Sunday Player of the Year competition. Liverpool supporters have felt that there has been a smear campaign against Luis Suarez over the last few months.  There was more evidence of this last night with the Sky Sports Player of 2011 online...

José Enrique effectiveness vs. Wigan

Quality left-backs at Liverpool have been a premium down the years but the acquisition of José Enrique has proven to be an excellent signing. Defensively, he is everything you need in a full-back; he's strong so holds attackers off with ease, calm and confident on the ball, quick, his positional sense is second-to-none and...

Do Liverpool need to buy anyone this January?

As we approach the January transfer window Liverpool will be looking to bring in a few new faces to the club and whether those players are stars or up and comers we will find out. As you look at the team closely you are able to find those areas in which we are in...

Adam, Downing & Henderson: New boys’ Graduation Day due

I might be witnessing a graduation on Sunday.  I hope to see new boys coming of age in a Red shirt. No, not our much criticised, 6 ft plus, work in progress, AC.  His time will come. My own theory is that he needs to come off the bench with 30 minutes to go, in...

Torres vs Suarez (or why can’t we have both?)

Recently there have been rumours  surrounding Fernando Torres and a potential move back to Liverpool, almost a year after he went to Chelsea for £50 million. The consensus from most Liverpool fans is that there’s no chance we will take him back. But hang on a second. Is there really a huge difference between Torres and Liverpool’s star...

Liverpool V Aston Villa | Stats & Graphical Preview

Next up is a trip to Villa Park where we lost our final league game last year 1-0. The goal scorer for Villa that day our very own winger Stewart Downing. Villa go into the game in 9th position in the table on 19 points from 15 games with a form guide and last...

Opta Stat Attack | Andy Carroll’s time at Liverpool FC

Most Liverpool supporters have made their minds up on Andy Carroll. A lot of rival club supporters believe he's been one of the worst transfers in recent history, arguably the worst (well, maybe the best if you're a Newcastle supporter). However it is way too early in his career to be labelling him with...

Liverpool’s MVP: Pepe Reina | Opta Stats

Nearly but not quite. That was the 2008/9 Barclays Premiere League season which made the hope in Red's hearts rise so very high. Certainly did mine. Saturday 14th March, as I entered the channel tunnel returning from a trip to Rotterdam, I was one happy red. I'd just had a text confirming a 4-1...

Liverpool FC 1 QPR 0 | Quick Opta Match Stats

Finally, Liverpool FC managed to win at Anfield after four consecutive stalemates against United, City, Norwich & Swansea. Liverpool needed to bounce back from their undeserved loss to Fulham on Monday night and they just about got there in the end. After missing a whole host of chances in the first half Liverpool scored...

Liverpool V QPR | Tactical Stats & Graphical Preview

Not a great week for Liverpool Football Club. There is nothing more frustrating than an undeserved defeat. Add to that a spurious F.A. charge for failing to control your players, and an investigation into your lead striker for a provocative hand gesture, and you can quite comfortable say it hasn't been the best of...

Liverpool dominated until Spearing Sending off | Player Influence Stats

It had been a tough week for Liverpool supporters with the loss of Lucas Leiva to a long term injury and then seeing a whole host of records break at the Cottage it has not been a very happy time for the Reds. Unfortunately we've got to cover the Fulham loss and try to analyse...

Charlie Adam | Gung-ho glory to midfield responsibility

The arrival of Charlie Adam at Anfield was met, in my quarters, with an expectation of failure. His reputation for being slightly more on the rotund end of the scale in a modern game of six-packed athletes ensured many were predisposed to dislike him, and his failure to make the grade at Rangers gave...

Graft, Craft and How to Fill “The Lucas Role”

Getting the right mix of grafters and crafters is vital to a team's success. A grafter is the type of player who makes up for any failings in natural technical ability through sheer blood, guts and endeavour. Think Dirk Kuyt. On the opposite end of the scale you have crafters, players who have a very...

Lucas Deserves More From All Of Us

A Sky Sports Man of the Match award at last.  Forget the 2010 Liverpool FC Young Player of the Year Award and the Golden Samba awarded from the Kop last season; that man of the match award from Gary Neville and co after the Manchester City match must mean that Lucas Leiva is finally...

To Me, To You | A look at Liverpool centre-back pairings

Hansen and Lawrenson, Hansen and Thompson, Henchoz and Hyypia, Carragher and Hyypia. These are some of the Liverpool centre-back pairings that have been forged over the years, now with the establishment of Skrtel and Agger, have we found a centre-back pairing that can last? Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger have had little chance to play alongside...

The Challenge Facing Jay Spearing

Following the sad news that Lucas Leiva will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Liverpool's recent Carling Cup quarter-final victory at Chelsea, Kenny Dalglish faces a dilemma: just who can fill the current player-of-the-year's boots? Perhaps a replacement will be drafted in during the forthcoming transfer window,...

Fulham V Liverpool | Tactical & Stats Preview

And what a week that was. From Chelsea to City and back again. Two fantastic performances put in by the players. Then right back down to earth with the hide-under-the-duvet moment when we found out the unfortunate news of Lucas's bad injury. After putting in a couple of bone crunching displays against City and...

Quantifying Lucas’ Absence

The widespread disappointment that met the news of Lucas’ injury is a reflection on the Brazilian’s progress; his tale of zero to hero is now well-repeated in mainstream discussion. Statistics have justified his continued role in the team. He’s been the league’s most prolific tackler both this and last season, and also produced a fine ball-winning...

Liverpool Vs City | The Story via Player Influence Pitch Maps

Another draw at Anfield, this time against a side Liverpool weren't the favourites to beat. Premier League leaders Manchester City visited Anfield confident of taking away all three points after demolishing teams like Spurs and, arch rivals, United in their own grounds 1-5 & 1-6 respectively. Liverpool though had other ideas and will feel...

Liverpool V Man City | A Tactical & Stats Preview

This week the billions of Manchester City come to town, and what a game it promises to be. I'm not sure what it is about City, but they don't seem to attract the same envious jealousy that Chelsea attracted when oligarch Roman Abramovich arrived on the scene and bankrolled the Stamford Bridge outfit with...

Goals From Midfield Crucial To Success | Liverpool FC Opta Stats

For years under Rafa Benitez and Roy Hodgson Liverpool were accused of being a one-man, and later two-man, team as the goals of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres helped the Reds to continue to compete at the top table with only Dirk Kuyt and briefly Yossi Benayoun helping to break their monopoly on the...

Lucas Leiva | The Brazilian Against The World (Stats analysis)

Lucas Leiva, the player Liverpool fans love, and others love to hate. Recently though, the unBrazilian Brazilian has become a bit of a legend to Liverpool fans, and has become a pivotal part of Liverpool’s midfield.

Chelsea 1 Liverpool 2 | The Story via Player Influence Pitch Maps

Liverpool FC's third consecutive away victory was impressive at Stamford Bridge today. Not only was it a third consecutive away victory it was also two in a row at Stamford Bridge which not many teams have accomplished in the modern era. The victory stretches Liverpool's unbeaten run to nine in all competitions and seven...

Liverpool V Chelsea | A Super Sunday | Statistical Preview

After an international break which seemed like an eternity, next up for Liverpool is a difficult away trip to Stamford Bridge. We are of course no strangers to Chelsea considering the amount of times we have played them in the league and Champion's League over the last number of years. So expect some players...

Liverpool FC | What’s stopping Pepe Reina?

With Liverpool sat in sixth place, three points off of fourth placed Chelsea and an inferior goal difference to the sides above them in the table, what do we need to improve on to get into a Champions League spot? A meagre goal difference of +4 has stemmed from home draws with Sunderland, Norwich and...

Liverpool FC | Is an ‘outdated’ system the way forward?

Upon Kenny Dalglish’s return as Liverpool manager in January 2011, many supposed experts suggested that the club legend had been ‘out of the game’ for too long.  Whatever that term is meant to mean, Dalglish soon proved that it was nothing to worry about.  Improved performances led to improved results as Liverpool made a...

Liverpool | Will Be Flying High If They Expose Chelsea High-Line

During the summer one of the key attributes that many fans felt the team was missing was raw pace and the ability to break forward quickly and hit teams on the counter attack. While Liverpool FC's front four of Maxi, Meireles, Kuyt and Suarez was effective thanks to the quartet’s fabulous movement and intelligence,...

Daniel Agger | Liverpool FC defender compared against Premier League Rivals!

Daniel Agger arrived at Liverpool in 2006 from Brondby for a fee of 6 million Pounds. His growth at Liverpool has been apparent and many consider him to be one of, if not the best central defender in the Premier League. However, his career in Merseyside has been plagued with injuries that have left...
