Scouser Tommies: End Of This Line

Scouser Tommies: End Of This Line

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back and feeling a little bit bruised after an event that hasn’t happened since Paul Konchesky was the star of Roy Hodgson’s version of LFC. Meanwhile, as what has been an amazing ride under Jurgen Klopp stutters towards the end, it sounds like Liverpool have lined up his successor. There are mixed feelings from fans about Arne Slot as the next boss of Liverpool but as Jay and Jim discuss, all they have been hearing – from people who know Dutch football and know Liverpool – points to him being exactly who the Reds need. It certainly feels like there’s something to look forward to after a few weeks no Reds want to look back at. A rare derby defeat at Goodison Park has left the blue quarter of Liverpool parading around like they’ve won a trophy and the rest of us feeling like we’ve lost three. Everton invited their neighbours to their now traditional just-avoided-relegation party this year, and Liverpool brought gifts. The neighbours will say they ended the Reds’ title hopes, but Liverpool were already done. All good things must come to an end and in football they often end before they are mathematically impossible, so whilst at the time of recording there was still a theoretical chance of the title, the miracles required were way too far-fetched. Especially when one of them was for Liverpool to find their form again. So Klopp wasn’t to get his fairy-tale ending, but maybe now the pressure is off and the players he puts out could try and entertain us instead of everyone else. Next up is a trip to West Ham, and our old mate David Moyes, so the potential is definitely there for the nightmare to continue. Especially if we dwell too much on the fact that there is still a mathematical chance that Liverpool don’t qualify for the Champions League. It’s not the best of endings to the last season under the German, but it does still end with a trophy, and there is still time to settle some scores on the pitch. Learn more about your ad choices. Gini Wijnaldum doesn’t get the respect he deserves. He’s one of Jurgen Klopp’s most trusted players, he’s played a key part in Liverpool transitioning from top four hopefuls to Premier League winners and he’s the ultimate clutch player for the Reds.  Against Boro on the final day of the 2016/17 campaign, Wijnaldum bagged the opener […]

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was happy with his side’s 3-0 win over VfB Stuttgart in Austria on Saturday as The Reds continued their preparations for the new season. Goals from Roberto Firmino, Naby Keïta and Rhian Brewster were enough to ensure a confidence-boosting win for Klopp’s men against the German outfit. VfB Stuttgart had just […]

The 2020/2021 fixtures were released last Thursday, the 20th of August. Champions Liverpool begin their title defence at home to newly-promoted Leeds United, before travelling to Chelsea and hosting Arsenal at Anfield in game number three. What is most noticeable, however, is how compressed the campaign — which had to be readjusted due to the […]

Sadio Mane is often overlooked. It’s not purposefully done and there’s nothing malicious in it, it’s just one of the downsides of playing in the best team in the world. Mohamed Salah’s ridiculous goal return sees him take centre stage more often than not. Virgil van Dijk is Virgil van Dijk. Alisson makes a monumental […]

Jurgen Klopp sprang a surprise in the pre-season of 2018/2019 by using Adam Lallana as the deepest midfielder. Despite the fact the Reds manager hinted at it in the press, Liverpool fans had to pick their jaws off the floor when they saw Lallana — an attacking midfielder for all his career to date — […]

Liverpool’s Gini Wijnaldum sees similarities between The Reds’ tough start to the 2020/21 Premier League season and the beginning of the 2016/17 campaign. Wijnaldum just arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2016 as one of Jürgen Klopp’s first signings for the club. Liverpool were still completing the work on the new Main Stand at […]

Dejan Lovren’s departure left a void in the Liverpool squad. He may have only been the fourth-choice centre-back for the Reds but given Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are prone to the odd injury, it’s an important role at Anfield. Fabinho can, and has, played there but losing him as the deepest midfielder of a […]

The Premier League fixtures for the 2020/21 campaign were released this morning ahead of the season’s start which will be on September 12th. That first weekend, Liverpool welcome newly-promoted Leeds United to Anfield to get their title defence underway. The season starts a month later than normal due to the unplanned break during the 2019/20 […]

Liverpool’s signing of Kostas Tsimikas is the latest example of the Reds acquiring players with a bedrock of experience of winning titles in so-called “lesser” European Leagues. The Greek, who has two Greek titles to his name, signed from Olympiacos last week to provide Jurgen Klopp with much-needed depth in the left-back position. Whether directly […]

James Milner has been a great servant for Liverpool, and all of the other clubs that he has played at. It is fair to say that he has had a lot of success as a footballer and, just like a fine wine, he seems to have got better with age. While the majority of footballers […]
