Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back with another episode of Scouser Tommies, the first one since Virgil Van Dijk lifted the 20th League Title for the Reds in front of a packed Anfield.. It’s been a while, but Jay has been busy, to be fair. And whilst he had extra special reasons to celebrate, the whole city has been in a party mood for quite some time now. (Not quite the whole city, of course; some isolated areas haven’t had a sniff of a title party for 30 years now!) On this week’s show, Jim and Jay look back on that momentous day when Virgil lifted that trophy, the iconic image of the skipper holding that shiny chunk of silver aloft that will live long in the memory. They also touch on the contrasting feelings that came out of that victory parade, a day that had been filled with pride as countless Reds made the pilgrimage to see their kings, celebrating in typical good humor, before the horrific scenes that, as awful as they were, thankfully—miraculously—weren’t as bad as we all feared they would be. The response, too, from those in the city, the offers of help, said so much about the true Liverpool. With a certain former Liverpool player swapping his No. 66 for the shirt usually worn by the sub before squad numbers came in, Jay and Jim look at how the feelings have started to change from those who were critical of the reception the player got from the fans he claims he loves. More and more see just why that reception was deserved. He’s not the first, he won’t be the last, but as Jim and Jay discuss, he’s done it in the worst possible way and ensured he won’t be remembered in the same way as some of those true legends whose names grace the official LFC museum—long after their boots were hung up for the last time. From tears in front of the Sky cameras to showing off the kind of fluent Spanish you don’t pick up overnight, it’s been quite the planned departure. More important than any of that is the fact that Liverpool have some new faces on the way in, the club showing true intent this summer to ensure Arne Slot has what he needs to turn one league title into a period of sustained success. Jay and Jim look at the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, a direct and exciting replacement for that player who’s just left. Most exciting of all is the impending record transfer of Florian Wirtz, Frimpong’s Leverkusen teammate, and Jay explains just how popular that player is amongst his own countrymen. Those signings, along with the likely arrival of Milos Kerkez, are a massive statement of intent from the champions. Isn’t it nice saying, “The Champions”, by the way? The hosts talk about how last season was basically a "test run" for Arne and wonder just how he’s going to fare when he gets his hands on the players he’s had a hand in signing himself. Last season was just the beginning; will we see a new style of play in the next campaign? Will these new signings allow him to truly stamp his authority on the team's style? To wrap things up, there’s a moment for Jay and Jim to point out some social media posts that caught their eyes, with an old face who’s still not welcome in isolated parts of the city, and a post from Liverpool Airport that really put a certain ex-player in his place. The Marko Grujic Link – A Different Liverpool in the Transfer Market?

The Liverpool front of house has had a drastic change since the appointment of Jurgen Klopp but is the most effective change the one behind the scenes ? On the pitch we have our eccentric German doing his upmost to rid Anfield of the toxic atmosphere that has plagued the club for the past 18...

Merry Klopp-mas and a Quiet New Year?

The countdown is on and the big day is nearly upon us. Excited boys and girls are writing their lists, checking them twice (at least!) and hoping that when the time comes, they’ll be screeching with excitement over the presents that they have been dreaming about for months, delivered by the jolly red man...

Three Liverpool Problems Even Jurgen Klopp Cannot Fix

For many Liverpool supporters the arrival of Jurgen Klopp was a godsend. The charismatic and passionate German has been a breath of fresh air on Merseyside and in English football.  He has rejuvenated Liverpool and masterminded incredible away wins at Chelsea and Manchester City. He even made Dejan Lovren look not-so-terrible. But as much as we...

Feed the Scousers

Feed the Scousers, let them know it’s Christmas time. How we laugh eh? I was at St James' Park last week for that inexplicably insipid performance from what had, up until that point, been an impressive looking all-red bandwagon we had going on there. (Chill out everyone, it will kick in again any match-day now.) When Newcastle...

The Coutinho Conundrum

In recent weeks, Liverpool have put on three stellar displays: dismembering Chelsea, Manchester City and Southampton all away from home, and yet there have also been some dire, and rather boring affairs - the Newcastle and Sion matches, and to an extent the Swansea match were all too familiar and brought back bad memories...

The lowdown on Liverpool Target Marko Grujic

Rumours surfaced early last week that Liverpool were in talks with Red Star Belgrade over the signing of their talented midfielder Marko Grujic. I'm going to go out on a limb here and saying not many people watch the Serbian League so to most this player is a bit of an unknown. There's something...

Jürgen Klopp’s Defensive Dilemma

What a difference a weekend makes. I was all set to have a piece done on why I thought Mamadou Sakho should he the man to partner Dejan Lovren in the heart of the Liverpool defence this weekend against Watford, only for Craig Gardener to recklessly injure him. Now Liverpool fans are stuck with...

Liverpool 2 WBA 2 – What Went Wrong Tactically

I recently wrote a piece inspired by the positivity of the 6-1 victory over Southampton in the Capital One Cup. In that match there was a real feeling that Jurgen Klopp was starting to introduce his tactical concepts to the squad and that we would see the team go from strength to strength. Since...

Liverpool Need A New Man Between The Sticks

Statistics can tell you a number of things and sometimes can cloud fans judgements on players, some players pass completion rates are incredibly high, but if they only pass safe short passes into the more gifted players, is this really telling you the full picture?  Similarly, with Simon Mignolet, he has had 5 clean...

One-Paced Liverpool’s Need for Speed

When great attacking sides are mentioned, one quality above all springs to mind - pace. Barcelona’s front three of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez are synonymous with bursting runs past labouring defenders, while Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard lit up the Premier League last season as they left hapless opponents in their wake. So...

Who are Liverpool’s Europa League Opponents Augsburg?

Just who are these German minnows? For those unfamiliar with the Bundesliga a match against Augsburg may seem like a walk in the park. The German outfit currently lay in 13th place, a mere 4 points ahead of bottom side VFB Stuggart in the table having lost half their 16 league games they've played this...

Jurgen Klopp Conducts The Anfield Orchestra

Jürgen Klopp conducted the Anfield orchestra during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion, and thanked the crowd at the end of the game for their response. In some quarters, the events of Sunday afternoon may be described as an overreaction, but to view it in this way would be to miss the point. The ground...

Slapstick Simon: an Anfield Thriller

"I enjoyed this game. I enjoyed this atmosphere with my whole body. Thank you." - Jurgen Klopp 2 balls dropped. 2 points lost. Simon Mignolet is back. Rumours of a new deal for the Liverpool Number 1 have surely been put on hold after another woeful display at Anfield. After public praise from Jurgen Klopp for...

Observations from a disappointing draw against WBA

It has been a weird season. We are midway through December, sixteen games into the season, and Watford currently sit two places and a point above Liverpool ahead of their match next weekend. A point at home against West Bromwich Albion shouldn't be celebrated but given the circumstances, it's a good point. How important...

Top 5 Players for Liverpool So Far This Season

We're coming up to the midway point of the season already. It's hard to really get a handle of what's happened so far. Depending on the day my opinion shifts from 'how are we halfway through the season already? It feels like it's just started' to 'how are we only in December? It's dragging'....

Remember-Ings: A Case for the Forgotten Danny

As the party raged in Merseyside and around the world in the week leading up to Klopp’s first game, one small, bearded balloon silently wandered from the festivities, slowly deflated and then popped, lost to obscurity. Danny Ings, filled with confidence and swagger coming off his first English cap, limped back to the locker room at...

Time for Liverpool to Sell Sick-Note Sturridge?

So the man made of glass Daniel Sturridge is out injured again for Liverpool. Is it now time that Liverpool cut their ties with Sturridge and say thanks for the goals and the memories but we can't afford to have a player on our books who spends more time on the treatment table than...

Complacency is the Enemy for Liverpool

Complacency is the enemy of success. There’s a quote for you, not sure where I heard it, I may have even just made it up. Not that the origin of the quote is what really matters, only the sentiment of it. As magnificent as destroying Southampton 6-1 at their own ground was, it doesn’t...

Five Striker Options for Liverpool to Target

Another day. Another Daniel Sturridge injury. The frequency and consistency of the frail, yet undeniably talented Daniel Sturridge has hit Liverpool hard, and following a promising yet inconsistent start under Jurgen Klopp, it’s clear that the German’s men require a bolster of firepower to increase their goal output. Roberto Firmino has been the most impressive...

Ode to Jurgen

From the Black Forest he rose into footballing glory, At Mainz Jurgen Klopp began his story, At Borussia Dortmund he found his fame, Suddenly, the world knew his name, Two titles, three cups, and a champions league final, German football had found a new idol. Bold, quirky, the master of Gegenpressing, Fun, passionate with...

Jürgen Klopp – Mind Over Money

Football is a 21st century sport, a game dominated by its financial wealth, in particular the affluent English Premier League. Liverpool are the eighth richest club in Europe, yet for as long as I can remember, we've been known as a club unable to financially compete with the elite clubs. In reality, that's not...

Liverpool’s Midfield Matches

A disappointing result, and a disappointing weekend, however turning the result into a positive we were missing in my eyes first team players like Mamadou Sakho, Emre Can, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.  Five players who make a difference. You would still like to think a team in some people's opinions who are...

Red, White and New: Klopp is America’s Dream

As Americans, our growing, yet seemingly sudden love affair with “soccer” (called from here on "football", for aesthetic reasons) is often times seen as something from a monster story by the more "traditional" fans; our passion, love and desire for our newly adopted teams grafted onto this sporting body and jolted to life by...

The Newcastle Defeat – Carry on Believing

When The Reds lose it can never be seen as anything other than shit. It's very rare you can take positives from a defeat because no matter how you look at it, it's a loss. You do however often hear managers talking about an eye opening defeat and the 2-0 loss to Newcastle was...

Jordon Ibe Flourishing In Competitive Liverpool Squad

Not many Liverpool fans like to admit it, but we were spoiled by Raheem Sterling. The revisionism following his move to Manchester City that “he isn’t that good anyway” was childish and he remains a remarkable footballer. However, with Sterling taking the brunt of the media glare last season, people are only just noticing...

Should We Dream a Dream of Stevie G?

"Stevie Gerrard, Gerrard, he'll pass the ball forty yards, he's big and he's fucking hard, Stevie Gerrard, Gerrard!". Much to the delight of a lot of Liverpool fans, Steven Gerrard this week started training with Liverpool in a bid to keep his fitness up during the MLS close season. For some fans, Gerrard should never...

Newcastle United 2 Liverpool 0 – Player Ratings

The highs of the Klopp era were well and truly halted as Newcastle parked their bus, hit us when they got an opportunity, and got a much needed victory for themselves. For us, it's back to the drawing board, as we proved that old habits die hard with some poor performances across the field....

Analysing Liverpool’s Full-Backs

For far too long, we have complained and been critical of our full backs for not being good enough. At left back, ever since John Arne Riise left the club, we have been left wondering how good Fabio Aurelio could have been, had he not been made of glass. Jose Enrique has never really...

Liverpool’s Boom-Bust Seasons Need To Stop Under Klopp

4th. 2nd. 7th. 6th. 8th. 7th. 2nd. 6th. In the last 8 years, no other club in England has yo-yoed quite like Liverpool from the verges of greatness to the verges of mediocrity. Each league season tells their own story, and this context must be fully appreciated in each situation. But clearly a pattern has...

The Benteke Discussion

There’s a delirium going around the fields of Anfield road as the Klopp-coloured haze descends upon Liverpool’s once fractured fanbase. It’s a wonderful thing, really, and suddenly what malaises Liverpool possessed under a stagnant regime have turned to the riveting, pulsating ecstasies. Concerns about a lack of goals have turned into the more welcomed...
