Scouser Tommies: ONE HUGE WEEKEND

Scouser Tommies: ONE HUGE WEEKEND

Join Jim Boardman and Jay Reid as they soak in the incredible atmosphere enveloping the city of Liverpool ahead of a monumental Bank Holiday weekend. The city is buzzing with events, from Radio One's Big Weekend to cruise liners docking, but most important of all it’s the final game of the season - a formality to go through before that long-awaited trophy lift, ahead of the victory parade through the city’s streets on Monday. For Jay, that trophy lift is an especially poignant moment; it’s the first time in his lifetime he'll witness Liverpool lift the league trophy at Anfield – a ticket he wouldn't sell for any price. It’s the first time the Reds have lifted the league trophy in front of fans at Anfield for 35 years, so a large chunk of the Liverpool support are in the same boat. Two of the greatest centre-backs in football history will be on the pitch as the trophy gets lifted, with true club legend Alan Hansen set to present the trophy to future club legend Virgil Van Dijk, adding to the symbolism of the occasion. Jurgen Klopp will be there too, keeping to his promise of coming back but not in a way that would interfere with the work of Arne Slot. No surprise he’s there; he’s as big a fan as any of us, and every fan wants to be there. If only - but Anfield, as big as it now is, can’t possibly contain every Red who wants to be there on Sunday. In fact, if estimates of how many people are heading into the city for the weekend are true, 16 Anfields wouldn’t be enough. No problem though; the city is ready to showcase its unique, welcoming spirit and show how it throws a party, as the Reds' heroes show that trophy off from the top of a bus! The last match itself sees Liverpool host Crystal Palace. With both teams in a celebratory mood (Palace fresh from their own FA Cup triumph), Jay and Jim are wondering if it’s even worth bothering with the footy itself. Jim and Jay reflect on a season where Liverpool exceeded expectations to clinch that title, but with transfer windows set to open, work needs to be done to ensure new expectations are met. No Red expected Slot to be so successful so soon - but all Reds want more of the same. The hosts briefly discuss some of the transfer rumours swirling around potential incomings like Frimpong and Kerkez, and possible departures including the respected Joe Gomez and potentially Darwin Nunez. Since the show was recorded, rumours about Florian Wirtz leaving Germany for Merseyside have gathered pace, but until he’s had his photo holding up his new shirt, Jay and Jim are assuming nothing. There's also discussion on manager Arne Slot's latest press conference, particularly his comments on Trent Alexander-Arnold's training and defensive application, and how the media has portrayed this. The hosts touch on how Trent might be received and the importance of focusing on the collective celebration. What advice would the hosts give Arne, if he asked, on how to handle this last bit with Trent? As for that victory parade, the hosts offer some tips for fans wanting to catch a glimpse of the champions. It's a time to savour the moment, celebrate a hard-won title, and look forward to what the future holds for the Reds. As always, there’s plenty to laugh about from across the park, although you aren’t likely to find any of them there as the A55 clogs up under the weight of a blue-tinged exodus to North Wales. Sunday will also mark the final match for George Sephton, the iconic 'Voice of Anfield'. His voice has boomed around Anfield for decades, since the days the Reds were winning titles almost every season. He really is and has been part of Anfield - he’s been there for the good times and the bad, and it really won’t be the same without him. Thanks for everything, George, from all of us. April 1964: 50 Years On, Liverpool Seek to Relive the Past

As Liverpool FC take the field to take on Spurs on March 30th it will be exactly 50 years to the day since they also faced their North London opponents on the same patch of green Anfield turf. Back in 1964, The Beatles were number one in the charts with Can't Buy Me Love and...

Liverpool FC – They’ve Got The Balls!

As a 34 year old Liverpool fan with a dodgy ticker, the last few years have been relatively easy to get through, stress wise. We haven't been that great and we haven't had much to play for at the business end of the season. Sure we've had times where we've played well and yes, we've...

Liverpool 2 Sunderland 1 | In-Depth Tactical Analysis

Liverpool continued in the 4-3-1-2 diamond-type shape from the last three matches. Coutinho remained at the tip with Allen and Henderson playing as the shuttlers outside of  Gerrard. Possibly the best way to describe the shape Poyet played was a 5-2-1-2. Bridcutt and Cattermole played as defensive midfielders in front of the backline and Giaccherini...

Why has 89 replaced 63 as Liverpool’s new Magic Number?

Neil Poole explains the significance of the number 63 in Liverpool’s recent history and why 89 is now the new number on the block. The complete irrelevance of the number 63 in the world is quite startling. At best, it’s the year that Joseph of Arimathea went to Glastonbury on the first Christian mission to...

Relax against Liverpool? All the best!

‘Relax!’ ‘Guys, RELAX!’ screamed Ole Gunner Solskjaer as his team lead Liverpool 2-1. The Cardiff manager was visibly distressed at seeing his defence crumble with a mazy run into the box by Daniel Sturridge. The move eventually breaking down, the fear, however, remained. ‘Relax’ he pleaded, ‘Relax’. Alas it was too late. For the Cardiff players...

Brendan Rodgers and the rebirth of Steven Gerrard

At a time where many of us are patting ourselves on the back and saying, "I told you Brendan Rodgers was the man for us" and watching in admiration at how he is helping return us to our perch, I feel it is only right that I hold my hands up and admit to...

The Epic Season of 13/14 | The Story So Far for Liverpool FC

"Can't believe this; same old story again.", Cried from the crowd before Jon Walter's pen, "He's goin' to score, this season is shit, 'Look at the bald Evertonian tit." "Come on Simon, let us see what you're worth! 'Prove to us Reds that you're made for the shirt," The crowd became tense, and the scene was set, Arses in ribbons, heads...

Liverpool FC’s Diamond Formation: An Analysis

How very interesting it was to sit down and watch Manchester United in Champions League action against Olympiacos, putting in a much better performance than that of three days previously against Liverpool (you know, the one in which we won 3-0? Remember that? Vaguely?). After their midfielders got bypassed and played through by Liverpool, they...

Trio dominant at Old Trafford | Gerrard, Henderson & Allen!

For the first time since I have been alive, Liverpool have gone into a game against Manchester United as the favourites to walk away with the three points. Manchester United Vs Liverpool | Deja Vu…. with some differences!

For one week in March 2009, we ruled the world. March 10th: Liverpool 4-0 Real Madrid. March 14th: Manchester United 1-4 Liverpool. It was the golden era of the Benitez years, a time when we felt genuinely unstoppable, putting two of the most globally revered names in world football to the sword.  It was a wonderful time...

One Flew Over the Kolo’s Nest

"No no, no no nono, no no nono, no no nono Toure" Admittedly, that was poor. But then again, it appears Liverpool's resident Ivorian has been playing in a similar run of form leading many Liverpool fans to sit wincing at their television as Kolo Toure runs  rings around himself, looking as though he is...

Brendan Rodgers and The Transfer Committee | The Outgoings

Doubters. Something Brendan Rodgers has had to deal with throughout his brief period as Liverpool manager. With particular regards to transfers, fans have spoken themselves to death in discussing who to...

Fabio Borini – Good, but good enough for Liverpool? | Stats Analysis

The Past I’d be lying if I said I knew a lot about Fabio Borini before he had been linked with Liverpool FC. The hype surrounding him prior to his reunion with Brendan Rodgers was quite unfounded and primarily based on video compilations of his best footballing moments. A section of the fans opined that...

Home & Away: Starring Philippe Coutinho | Stats Analysis

Philippe Coutinho’s display in the recent game away at Southampton was disappointing, but not unexpected. Since joining the club he’s put in this type of performance on numerous occasions, with the earliest example being a game against Chelsea at Anfield last season, when he was substituted at half time. A tweet from City Talk’s Jay...

Daniel Sturridge | Witness the Brendan Rodgers Effect

Daniel Sturridge was a promising youngster at Manchester City when he first made his name. He didn’t manage to fulfil his potential as he never really got to play in his desired position or some could argue his attitude was not right. Sturridge just wasn’t cutting it at Manchester City even though it was...
