SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. The Anfield Index in no way condones any mention of said "newspaper" and we sincerely apologise for the...

Joe Allen | One for the future, as well as right now

Wednesday 4th December 2013 was a great night for Liverpool Football Club and in particular for Luis Suarez. Four wonderful goals from the Uruguayan wizard and a very solid and professional job done by the whole team. Quite rightly, Luis Suarez went home with the Man of the Match award and all the plaudits. However,...

Suso | A Complete Stats Analysis of his loan so far

“I think that he has everything needed to succeed there. He can dribble well and does have great vision. He could be effective playing in the middle. "He can score goals. He likes to go into the area as part of the second wave. I think they have signed a jewel.”  Former Cadiz youth team...

Sterling silver or another dull show piece?

After bursting onto the Premier League scene last season, a year on Raheem Sterling seems to have slipped under the radar a little bit. He's only made three starting appearances so far in the premier league and has come off the bench six times to accumulate a grand total of 370 minutes played. This...

One-Third of Liverpool’s season in | Progress?

You should judge a team’s credentials after 10-12 league games, they say. Amid the annoying international breaks, spectacular goals, controversial refereeing decisions, Joe Allen's derby miss and the SAS magic, Liverpool's season has stuttered along. There seems to be a lack of continuity, fluidity and momentum. The coming 4 weeks promise to provide exactly...

It is true that, with recent seasons proving so desperate and barren, we should enjoy this season as the Reds look...

Why December is important to Liverpool’s season

Next month is by far the most important month of Liverpool's 2013/14 campaign on a whole. December is the month when players get tired from the past few months of football and see themselves pushed to the limit with a rush to get all of our remaining 7 games played and out the way...

Liverpool’s left back issue: Is he the Taylor-Made solution?

Anyone who has watched Liverpool for the past two seasons would agree that Liverpool need a new first choice left back. In fact, if you go back the last 10 years you could put forward an argument that Liverpool’s last top class left back was actually a right back, that player would be Alvaro...

Hull City Vs Liverpool | A Game We Should Be Winning

‘A game we've already won on paper’ This is a platitude that will be on the lips of many Liverpool supporters if next weekend’s trip to Hull comes up in conversation around the water cooler. Everton 3 Liverpool 3 | Match Review & Stats

Pundits have hailed it as the finest Merseyside derby in years; yet the six goal thriller whilst a joy to watch, will have left both Roberto Martinez and Kop boss Brendan Rodgers disappointed they didn't walk away with all three points. Coutinho opened the scoring on six minutes with the ball glancing off the head...

Why isn’t Rodgers the Messiah yet?

According to Wikipedia.org, the messiah complex (also known as the Christ complex or saviour complex) is a state of mind in which an individual holds the belief that they are, or are destined to become, a saviour. Rodgers certainly doesn’t outwardly exhibit this, and conversely, the faithful of Liverpool Football Club aren’t holding him...

How do you solve a problem like Jordan Henderson?

On Liverpool blogs across the web many paragraphs have been devoted to discussing the player that Jordan Henderson has blossomed into this season but regardless of how much everyone agrees on his improvement, his best position for the team is still a matter that needs to be discussed. This season he’s played as a...

Looking At The Defensive Issues Of The Shape Vs Fulham and Arsenal

Well it's international break so unfortunately there has been no club football to comment on from the weekend *groans*. Happily, what it does do is allow a bit of time to reflect on things from the last few weeks - in particular a couple of defensive issues. Under Brendan Rodgers' management, Liverpool have used a...

In the midst of the latest in a seemingly never ending series of International breaks, the Anfield Index staff got together and decided to take a look at Liverpool's season so far. The highs, the lows, the surprise packages and the disappointments. In this article I have chosen to highlight the form of a player who has surprised...

Liverpool’s Most Influential Player So Far This Season

The question of who has been Liverpool's most influential player so far this season would be a tough one to answer with many players stepping up to the mark and keeping us in the top four. The most influential player doesn't necessarily have to be the one who scores the most goals or who...

Liverpool FC Stars Answer International Call

This is also the...

Another Way of Winning | FSG & Liverpool FC

‘The measure of intelligence is the ability to change’ Those words by Albert Einstein are oft quoted to soften the blow of being proved wrong or having to change your mind; nobody likes the thought of either, but at times it’s necessary. Adapting, changing your views and broadening your horizons are courageous actions as one...

Liverpool 4 Fulham 0 | Match Reaction & Stats

When Brendan Rodgers first arrived at Anfield, he did something that few managers have done before him; he met with the fans and in every interview he tried to explain his vision for Liverpool and hoped it would stick. He did this in order to educate us, to bring us on the journey as...

Three At The Back Can Still Work for Liverpool

Against Arsenal last week we attempted to employ the same system we used so successfully against West Brom: 3 central defenders, with two wing-backs. Clearly it didn’t go well, and it led to a very poor first half performance from Liverpool. This prompted Rodgers to revert to four at the back for the second...
