Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Three Liverpool Problems Even Jurgen Klopp Cannot Fix

For many Liverpool supporters the arrival of Jurgen Klopp was a godsend. The charismatic and passionate German has been a breath of fresh air on Merseyside and in English football.  He has rejuvenated Liverpool and masterminded incredible away wins at Chelsea and Manchester City. He even made Dejan Lovren look not-so-terrible. But as much as we...

Feed the Scousers

Feed the Scousers, let them know it’s Christmas time. How we laugh eh? I was at St James' Park last week for that inexplicably insipid performance from what had, up until that point, been an impressive looking all-red bandwagon we had going on there. (Chill out everyone, it will kick in again any match-day now.) When Newcastle...

The Coutinho Conundrum

In recent weeks, Liverpool have put on three stellar displays: dismembering Chelsea, Manchester City and Southampton all away from home, and yet there have also been some dire, and rather boring affairs - the Newcastle and Sion matches, and to an extent the Swansea match were all too familiar and brought back bad memories...

The lowdown on Liverpool Target Marko Grujic

Rumours surfaced early last week that Liverpool were in talks with Red Star Belgrade over the signing of their talented midfielder Marko Grujic. I'm going to go out on a limb here and saying not many people watch the Serbian League so to most this player is a bit of an unknown. There's something...

Jürgen Klopp’s Defensive Dilemma

What a difference a weekend makes. I was all set to have a piece done on why I thought Mamadou Sakho should he the man to partner Dejan Lovren in the heart of the Liverpool defence this weekend against Watford, only for Craig Gardener to recklessly injure him. Now Liverpool fans are stuck with...

Liverpool 2 WBA 2 – What Went Wrong Tactically

I recently wrote a piece inspired by the positivity of the 6-1 victory over Southampton in the Capital One Cup. In that match there was a real feeling that Jurgen Klopp was starting to introduce his tactical concepts to the squad and that we would see the team go from strength to strength. Since...

Liverpool Need A New Man Between The Sticks

Statistics can tell you a number of things and sometimes can cloud fans judgements on players, some players pass completion rates are incredibly high, but if they only pass safe short passes into the more gifted players, is this really telling you the full picture?  Similarly, with Simon Mignolet, he has had 5 clean...

One-Paced Liverpool’s Need for Speed

When great attacking sides are mentioned, one quality above all springs to mind - pace. Barcelona’s front three of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez are synonymous with bursting runs past labouring defenders, while Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard lit up the Premier League last season as they left hapless opponents in their wake. So...

Who are Liverpool’s Europa League Opponents Augsburg?

Just who are these German minnows? For those unfamiliar with the Bundesliga a match against Augsburg may seem like a walk in the park. The German outfit currently lay in 13th place, a mere 4 points ahead of bottom side VFB Stuggart in the table having lost half their 16 league games they've played this...

Jurgen Klopp Conducts The Anfield Orchestra

Jürgen Klopp conducted the Anfield orchestra during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion, and thanked the crowd at the end of the game for their response. In some quarters, the events of Sunday afternoon may be described as an overreaction, but to view it in this way would be to miss the point. The ground...

Slapstick Simon: an Anfield Thriller

"I enjoyed this game. I enjoyed this atmosphere with my whole body. Thank you." - Jurgen Klopp 2 balls dropped. 2 points lost. Simon Mignolet is back. Rumours of a new deal for the Liverpool Number 1 have surely been put on hold after another woeful display at Anfield. After public praise from Jurgen Klopp for...

Observations from a disappointing draw against WBA

It has been a weird season. We are midway through December, sixteen games into the season, and Watford currently sit two places and a point above Liverpool ahead of their match next weekend. A point at home against West Bromwich Albion shouldn't be celebrated but given the circumstances, it's a good point. How important...

Top 5 Players for Liverpool So Far This Season

We're coming up to the midway point of the season already. It's hard to really get a handle of what's happened so far. Depending on the day my opinion shifts from 'how are we halfway through the season already? It feels like it's just started' to 'how are we only in December? It's dragging'....

Remember-Ings: A Case for the Forgotten Danny

As the party raged in Merseyside and around the world in the week leading up to Klopp’s first game, one small, bearded balloon silently wandered from the festivities, slowly deflated and then popped, lost to obscurity. Danny Ings, filled with confidence and swagger coming off his first English cap, limped back to the locker room at...

Time for Liverpool to Sell Sick-Note Sturridge?

So the man made of glass Daniel Sturridge is out injured again for Liverpool. Is it now time that Liverpool cut their ties with Sturridge and say thanks for the goals and the memories but we can't afford to have a player on our books who spends more time on the treatment table than...

Complacency is the Enemy for Liverpool

Complacency is the enemy of success. There’s a quote for you, not sure where I heard it, I may have even just made it up. Not that the origin of the quote is what really matters, only the sentiment of it. As magnificent as destroying Southampton 6-1 at their own ground was, it doesn’t...

Five Striker Options for Liverpool to Target

Another day. Another Daniel Sturridge injury. The frequency and consistency of the frail, yet undeniably talented Daniel Sturridge has hit Liverpool hard, and following a promising yet inconsistent start under Jurgen Klopp, it’s clear that the German’s men require a bolster of firepower to increase their goal output. Roberto Firmino has been the most impressive...

Ode to Jurgen

From the Black Forest he rose into footballing glory, At Mainz Jurgen Klopp began his story, At Borussia Dortmund he found his fame, Suddenly, the world knew his name, Two titles, three cups, and a champions league final, German football had found a new idol. Bold, quirky, the master of Gegenpressing, Fun, passionate with...

Jürgen Klopp – Mind Over Money

Football is a 21st century sport, a game dominated by its financial wealth, in particular the affluent English Premier League. Liverpool are the eighth richest club in Europe, yet for as long as I can remember, we've been known as a club unable to financially compete with the elite clubs. In reality, that's not...

Liverpool’s Midfield Matches

A disappointing result, and a disappointing weekend, however turning the result into a positive we were missing in my eyes first team players like Mamadou Sakho, Emre Can, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.  Five players who make a difference. You would still like to think a team in some people's opinions who are...

Red, White and New: Klopp is America’s Dream

As Americans, our growing, yet seemingly sudden love affair with “soccer” (called from here on "football", for aesthetic reasons) is often times seen as something from a monster story by the more "traditional" fans; our passion, love and desire for our newly adopted teams grafted onto this sporting body and jolted to life by...

The Newcastle Defeat – Carry on Believing

When The Reds lose it can never be seen as anything other than shit. It's very rare you can take positives from a defeat because no matter how you look at it, it's a loss. You do however often hear managers talking about an eye opening defeat and the 2-0 loss to Newcastle was...

Jordon Ibe Flourishing In Competitive Liverpool Squad

Not many Liverpool fans like to admit it, but we were spoiled by Raheem Sterling. The revisionism following his move to Manchester City that “he isn’t that good anyway” was childish and he remains a remarkable footballer. However, with Sterling taking the brunt of the media glare last season, people are only just noticing...

Should We Dream a Dream of Stevie G?

"Stevie Gerrard, Gerrard, he'll pass the ball forty yards, he's big and he's fucking hard, Stevie Gerrard, Gerrard!". Much to the delight of a lot of Liverpool fans, Steven Gerrard this week started training with Liverpool in a bid to keep his fitness up during the MLS close season. For some fans, Gerrard should never...

Newcastle United 2 Liverpool 0 – Player Ratings

The highs of the Klopp era were well and truly halted as Newcastle parked their bus, hit us when they got an opportunity, and got a much needed victory for themselves. For us, it's back to the drawing board, as we proved that old habits die hard with some poor performances across the field....

Analysing Liverpool’s Full-Backs

For far too long, we have complained and been critical of our full backs for not being good enough. At left back, ever since John Arne Riise left the club, we have been left wondering how good Fabio Aurelio could have been, had he not been made of glass. Jose Enrique has never really...

Liverpool’s Boom-Bust Seasons Need To Stop Under Klopp

4th. 2nd. 7th. 6th. 8th. 7th. 2nd. 6th. In the last 8 years, no other club in England has yo-yoed quite like Liverpool from the verges of greatness to the verges of mediocrity. Each league season tells their own story, and this context must be fully appreciated in each situation. But clearly a pattern has...

The Benteke Discussion

There’s a delirium going around the fields of Anfield road as the Klopp-coloured haze descends upon Liverpool’s once fractured fanbase. It’s a wonderful thing, really, and suddenly what malaises Liverpool possessed under a stagnant regime have turned to the riveting, pulsating ecstasies. Concerns about a lack of goals have turned into the more welcomed...

Newcastle Utd vs. Liverpool: Team News, Key Stats & Predictions

Klopp's Liverpool continue to impress, moving up to sixth in the league with three points against Swansea at Anfield, before thumping six past a full strength Southampton side at St Mary's midweek in the Capital One Cup Quarter-Final. Steve McClaren's Newcastle, on the other hand, are probably alongside Aston Villa as the worst team,...

Klopp Effect – The Power Of Positivity

The Shackles are off Ladies and Gentlemen; our young guns are flying again! Jurgen Klopp may have been right in putting the brakes on expectation, but how can you not be excited by what is unfolding before our very eyes? 1-6 at St Marys, 1-4 at the Etihad and 1-3 at Stamford Bridge are the kind...
