Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Lallana discusses tackle Klopp referred to as a ‘fantastic counter-pressing block’

Adam Lallana explained the method behind his brilliant sliding challenge on Phil Bardsley which created the goal to put Liverpool in front on Sunday. There's nothing Jurgen Klopp loves more than effective counter-pressing in the opposition's defensive third of the pitch. Klopp referred to Lallana's challenge as a "game-changer" and a "fantastic counter-pressing block". Lallana pounced...

Observations as Liverpool Show Tenacity to Dismiss Talk of Losing Their Bottle

Liverpool ensured they remain hot on the tails of title rivals Manchester City with a 4-2 win against Burnley on Sunday afternoon. Despite the blistering conditions, the wind wouldn’t impede Jurgen Klopp’s side this time out, with braces from Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino enough to overturn the early deficit. Indeed, it was hardly the...

Key Stats As Liverpool Keep The Pressure On Against Burnley

Liverpool saw off a poor but spirited Burnley side thanks to doubles from Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino. But what were the key stats from a pulsating 4-2 win on Sunday lunchtime at Anfield? Sadio Strikes Again If it seems like I’m doing a section on Sadio Mané every single week, but he’s very quickly become...

Liverpool’s double brace bests Burnley

As the early kickoff time neared, Reds supporters were concerned about two things, that dastardly wind our manager keeps going on about and the refs who seem by their recent actions to be party to Manchester City's slush fund bonanza. We'll come on to those refs in a bit, but when the line-up card...

Player ratings as Liverpool edge past Burnley

I’ll be honest with you, about 10 minutes in I thought this was going to be a foul mouthed rant about officials with some ‘5/10: Didn’t do enough to break Burnley down’ for good measure. Alas, the Reds did their job and close the gap on City to one. Get past Bayern, see off Fulham...

Naby Keita: The key to a good performance against Burnley

Let's cast our minds back to a cold, dark Wednesday night at Turf Moor in December. Jürgen Klopp took his Liverpool team to take on Sean Dyche's Burnley and selected Naby Keita in central midfield for the second consecutive match after an injury lay-off had seen him reduced to watching his team mates from the...

Klopp’s PlayStation Midfield

You know, I’d already got this article in my brain long before I saw this tweet from Michael Caley, the brain behind Caley Graphics xG maps. Caley is a brilliant football analyst and the insight that he offers in this tweet backs up other data that I’ve seen in other places, but the simple...

Predicted Liverpool lineup after Klopp’s Burnley press conference

Jurgen Klopp gave Liverpool fans an injury update today ahead of Burnley's visit to Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday. As expected, judging from Klopp's quotes, Dejan Lovren can only hope for a place on the bench, at most, while the aim with Joe Gomez seems to be a return after the international break,...

Positive Thoughts & Taiwo Awoniyi | Reflecting on Liverpool’s Transfer Nous

In the midst of trying to wrap up an abysmal Bundesliga campaign, reports from German sports outlet Spox indicate that Schalke 04 have lodged preliminary interest with Liverpool in bringing youth forward Taiwo Awoniyi into their ranks over the summer. Majestic Van Dijk has Produced a Season of Greatness

Even when Liverpool leave you tearing your hair out, Virgil van Dijk still manages to come away blameless. At Everton, the Reds played with the kind of intensity on show at Goodison Park last season, when thoughts were more on Champions League duty rather than derby affairs, as a drab 0-0 draw was played out. Last...

Observations as Liverpool Drop To Second in Merseyside Stalemate

Although extending their unbeaten record against local rivals Everton, Liverpool missed the opportunity to return to the top of the Premier League table with another 0-0 stalemate, marking their third draw in the last five games in an afternoon marked by frustration. Much like their performance against Manchester United last weekend, this wasn't ninety minutes...

Everton 0-0 Liverpool: What went wrong?

A goalless draw at Old Trafford last weekend meant Liverpool's once-comfortable lead at the top of the Premier League table had been whittled down to nothing. They no longer had any margin for error. But it was a case of mistakes aplenty in the Merseyside Derby, and now the title race is out of...

Klopp’s Liverpool Can Look Beyond May For Success

The panic has started to set in. The nerves of a proper title race are jangling. Liverpool had a four-point lead at the top of the table, which could have been extended to seven, but instead, four draws in six games see it now as a deficit by a single point, leaving the title...

Liverpool Slip Up Again – Liverpool 0-0 Everton

Liverpool’s grip on the Premier League title loosened again, as their fourth draw in six league games saw them slip behind Manchester City in the table with nine games left to play after another insipid performance saw them draw 0-0 with Everton at Goodison Park. Klopp’s side controlled the first half, with the midfield selection...

Player Ratings as Klopp keeps his balls off the table

Training's cancelled on Tuesday, sorry lads. Klopp's got to go and attend a maths lesson, in order to learn that 1 win and 1 loss = 3 points, whereas 2 draws = 2 points. Honestly, I understand the conservatism to an extent but we had Everton. We had them. Forget the second half for a...

Alisson: A Man For The Moment

Football is a game defined by moments. There can be several, such as Gini Wijnaldum’s thunderous chip against Bournemouth, later followed up by a wonderfully worked team move, or there can be just one. A singular strike, a fortuitous deflection, a last-gasp penalty. Moments that define games. Alisson’s save to deny Jesse Lingard on Sunday was...

Sadio Mane: Liverpool’s Talisman in the Title Run-In

If Sadio Mane were to spend his free time reading about Liverpool, he would have every right to feel a little aggrieved about his lack of column inches. The Reds' No.10 still makes plenty of headlines, but in comparison to those around him, he is often given more of a supporting role. Mo Salah earns endless...
