SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Assessing Liverpool’s Attack For The Upcoming Season

In many respects, Liverpool were well equipped in the attacking department last season. Philippe Coutinho on the left wing, Sadio Mane on the right and Roberto Firmino through the middle, The Reds caused teams havoc on the counter-attacking. Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge provided Jurgen Klopp with some rotational options, particularly in the closing stages...

The criminally under-rated Liverpool captain

Last year, when Jurgen Klopp was once asked about Jordan Henderson, the German was unflustered when he said his captain is the most criminally under-rated player in the Premier League. Henderson is the subject of ridicule, from Liverpool fans and opposition fans alike. But does he deserve that? I don't believe he does. Since he permanently...

Coutinho, Van Dijk, Keita and hypocrisy

Are Leipzig a bigger club than Liverpool? How can they reject a 70 million euro bid from one of the most decorated clubs in the world? Cue the next bit of Liverpool ranting on Twitter. Are Leipzig Barcelona a bigger club than Liverpool? Why should Liverpool accept a 70 million euro bid from one of the most...

Are We Underrating Liverpool’s Full-Back Options?

It’s fair to say that Liverpool’s full-backs divide opinion. The performances of James Milner and Nathaniel Clyne came under increasing scrutiny last season, with the duo’s level dipping dramatically at the turn of the year and never returning. Both receive plenty of negative press in an era when full-backs are as renowned for their flamboyant attacking...

Assessing Liverpool’s Midfield For The Impending Season

Much has been made of Liverpool’s potential business this summer, particularly in the midfield department. While Jurgen Klopp has plenty of quality options to choose from, with his side achieving a top-four finish and subsequent return to the Champions League, a much busier fixture list will bring heavier demands. That will put more pressure on...

Transfermageddon: Liverpool’s Doomsday Plan

A week from August.  Less than three weeks from Liverpool’s opening match of the season. The Reds have signed one of the best forwards in Italy, a promising young left-back, and stole a striker prospect from a rival. Our two biggest targets in terms of value and publicity have become quite elusive to acquire while at...

The Importance of Keeping Coutinho

In recent years, Liverpool have acted too much like a small club in the transfer market. The club has developed a reputation for signing high potential players to eventually sell-on for higher fees once those players reach close to their maximum output. Since 2009, Liverpool have lost Xabi Alonso, Mascherano, Sterling, Torres and Luis...

Liverpool FC: More Than Just a Football Club

On Thursday afternoon, Liverpool FC's Twitter account tweeted a video of the new CEO, Peter Moore, detailing how Liverpool FC would be a proud member of Liverpool Pride: https://twitter.com/LFC/status/888042309505470464 I was not prepared for the comments that followed in response to the tweet. Similarly, the same type of comments were directed at Peter Moore, who also tweeted...

Will This Be Liverpool’s Best Attack Since The 1980s?

The opening 45 minutes of Saturday’s Premier League Asia Trophy final win over Leicester City were unbelievable. There was a frightening pace to the game, especially compared to the usual slow speed of a pre-season friendly, and Liverpool looked irrepressible for the most part. Jurgen Klopp’s attack-minded lineup saw the quintet of Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho,...

The Safe Standing Debate and Poll

On Saturday afternoon, the Liner Hotel behind Lime Street station was the venue for an open debate on the issue of safe standing and, in particular, the possible introduction of rail seating at Anfield. Hosted by Spirit of Shankly, the fans' Union, the panel consisted of Amanda Jacks – the caseworker for the Football Supporters’...

Assessing Liverpool’s Defence For The Upcoming Campaign

Having signed Dominic Solanke and smashing the club’s record transfer fee for Mohamed Salah, Liverpool have begun identifying key weaknesses within their current side. Andy Robertson is the latest to join The Reds this summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to address what has been a troubling position for several years now. However, there remains a...

Would Selling Philippe Coutinho Really be the End of the World?

Right then. There's a fair chance you've sent me a tirade of Twitter abuse before actually clicking to read this piece, so I'll thank you for *hopefully* not having wished death upon everyone I know and love. If you have, then here we are. Philippe Coutinho. What a treasure, Liverpool's darling. The adopted Brazilian that...

Why People Shouldn’t Forget Henderson’s Impact So Quickly

‘You don’t know what you have until it’s gone’ is a worldwide known statement, and a particularly poignant one for football fans. It’s very easy to forget the importance or impact of certain players after they’ve experienced a lengthy spell on the side-lines. Such is the case for Jordan Henderson, whose untimely injury at the...

Does Andy Robertson join as Liverpool’s starting left-back?

As Liverpool confirmed the signing of Andy Robertson from Hull City on Friday afternoon, there was widespread relief amongst the fan-base. Given the Scot's impressive form for Hull and potential to grow, the feeling is there that Liverpool may have finally found the solution to their left-back issue. We've seen the likes of Dossena, Konchesky, Flanagan...

Liverpool, It’s Time For Scouse Wife-Swap!

You may have tried to forget a 2003 reality show called Wife Swap which started in the UK and later ran in the US and other parts of the world.  The simple premise was that wives, usually frustrated with their actual husband and children, would be sent to live with a different family for two weeks.  You...

Naby Keïta: A Risk Worth Taking?

In my previous two analyses of Naby Keïta I looked at where he would fit in Liverpool's midfield, his personal qualities, and how he compares statistically to some of the top midfielders in the Premier League. Having gone through his numbers, it would appear he is a perfect fit for Liverpool and Klopp. However, there...

Why Liverpool’s Young Talent Are Unlikely To Succeed

A lot of discussion in pre-season has been made of Liverpool’s young talents, and how much they are likely to feature for the club next season. But the sad truth is that the majority of them simply have no future at Liverpool Football Club, and it’s okay to admit that. Looking at the current clutch...

The Jürgen Effect

Downing to Mané Poulsen to Keïta Carroll to Salah Above, are just three examples of how the type and profile of Liverpool FC's transfer targets have shifted under Jürgen Klopp in comparison to Hodgson and Dalglish, at the start of FSG's tenure. After several unsuccessful transfer windows which saw high spending, but minimal real gains in terms of...

10 Years Since Torres

July 4th will always have a place in Liverpool fan’s hearts. Back in 2007, Rafael Benitez smashed the club’s record transfer fee to bring Fernando Torres to Anfield for £20.2 million. During his three-and-a-half-year spell, Torres established himself as one of the best No.9’s the club had ever seen. Much like Bonny and Clyde, Batman...

Lucas Leiva: Retire The 21 Shirt

“People just don’t know just how good Lucas is” – Rafa Benitez, 2009. Well, I think this is it. He’s finally gone. On Sunday, Lazio tweeted a photo of Lucas Leiva holding one of their scarves and unless he bought it at the airport and just happened to have been spotted by the Roman club’s photographer,...

The Rise and Fall of Rafa Benitez

With Lucas Leiva set to leave Liverpool FC for Lazio there will no longer by any players left at the club, who were managed by Rafa Benitez. The Spaniard is a beloved figure at Anfield but the state in which he left the club, even though not entirely his fault, has left a bitter...

Will Klopp Trust Liverpool’s Youngsters to Deliver Next Season?

Having watched Klopp very closely over the past year and a half, it has become clear that there is one trait that he values above anything else and that's trust. A player can have all the ability in the world but if the German doesn't trust him to fit into his system and to...

Liverpool’s Ambition Must Match The Elite

I’ll say this at the outset. I’m in two minds about writing this. Back in April, fresh from the derby win at Anfield, I wrote about Ronald Koeman’s comments of satisfaction at the Blues’ performance and how they deserved better from their 3-1 defeat. I did all I could to follow his reasoning and wondered what...

Liverpool keen on Naby Keita

With the Premier League season less than a month away, preparations are in full swing. There has already been a number of big money moves and many more are likely to be on the horizon. One move we may see is Naby Keita heading to Anfield, however, Jurgen Klopp faces a tough fight for the...

Klopp’s Young Giants Pave Reds “Route-1”

Impact off the bench. Not since Ryan Babel nearly a decade ago have Liverpool had a reliable impact sub. For Jurgen Klopp it hasn’t been for a lack of trying.  During his first few months with Liverpool he made use of Benteke, Steven Caulker and even goalkeeper Shamal George as an auxiliary striker off the...

What makes a Liverpool legend?

It's an interesting question and one which, more than anything else, I'd just like to discuss with you readers. If you're interested in sports other than football, over the past few weeks you may well have heard or seen some 'legendary' players, teams or performances: there was Mohamed Amir's bowling spell in the Champions Trophy Final...
