SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Bournemouth vs Liverpool Preview | Klopp Hoping For a Bite of the Cherries

Liverpool start a busy December month with an away trip to AFC Bournemouth on Sunday, a game which could present Jürgen Klopp's men with a chance to return to the top of the table. The Reds are set to play six fixtures over the festive period, culminating with the big game against Manchester City on...

Bournemouth v Liverpool Preview – Key Battles

After a night of the teenagers at Anfield, it will probably be up to the more experienced players on Sunday, as Liverpool head down south to Dean Court to face Bournemouth. This is the first game of a few that Liverpool will play without the talismanic Philippe Coutinho after the little magician's injury against...

The Myth Surrounding Loris Karius’ Distribution

In the victory over Sunderland there was a moment in the match which saw Liverpool 'keeper Loris Karius kick the ball out of play for a corner as he was trying to play the ball out to Joel Matip. I'm almost certain it's a pass we've all made in our life. We've gone to play a...

A Clamorous Anfield?

At about the 62nd minute of the recent Liverpool-Sunderland match at Anfield, an animated (and arguably agitated) Jurgen Klopp turned to the Liverpool faithful in the stands and seemingly chided them for not the lackluster support, and yet rallied them to get behind the players as they hounded and attached the fortified Sunderland banks...

Couti-NOOO- Who Will Step Into The Magician’s Shoes?

"If we win the next game then I'll believe we can challenge for the title"- Me after every game. If you haven't made this statement yet you're; A. wildly optimistic B. need to smile once in a while. Liverpool's impressive start to their Premier League campaign continued this weekend as the Redmen disposed of another one of the...

Observations from Liverpool’s win against Leeds United

Well, it wasn't pretty but after making eight changes, giving players a go in different positions and blooding a few youngsters it wasn't going to be, was it? It was an intriguing watch but not if you're a fan of entertainment. It was once again up to Liverpool to be patient in possession and work...

Liverpool 2-0 Leeds United – Player Ratings

On a night when Leeds United and Garry Monk did their growing reputation no harm, Liverpool booked a spot in the semi-final with a 2-0 win. Divock Origi opened the scoring, poking in a stunning cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the story of the night is undoubtedly Ben Woodburn becoming the club's youngest ever...

Liverpool v Leeds – A Statistical Preview

The Liverpool team to face Leeds United at Anfield in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup is bound to have an unfamiliar look to it, with Jürgen Klopp likely to make up to nine changes from the weekend. Although there are a few experienced heads for the youngsters to lean on, the average age of this line-up...

Divock Origi – Taking Chances

From groans of displeasure to the Kop’s thunderous chorus. “Divock Origi” they chanted, moments after the 21-year old Belgian dashed towards the waiting Liverpool collective, all holding their hands out as if to embrace the man who’d finally undone the frustration. He slid; elegant and impassioned, majestic and manic, as Anfield lit up in celebration. Minutes...

Liverpool’s win over Sunderland – different types of winning

Generally speaking, wins come in different categories. So far this season, we’ve had the rollercoaster (Arsenal, Crystal Palace), the batterings (Leicester, Hull and Watford), the bossed win (Chelsea) and the routine (Derby and Burton Albion). Saturday saw us find a new stream. The eked out win. The hard yards. Of course, it wasn’t supposed to be...

Tactical Analysis – Liverpool maintain composure to break down Sunderland resistance

The match at Anfield against Sunderland took on extra significance given the run of form enjoyed by Chelsea under Antonio Conte. Whilst it is remiss to place too much importance on a single result at this stage of the season there is still a danger in allowing your opponent to open up too much...

Steven Gerrard – 15 Key Moments From The Career Of A Legend

Last Thursday (24/11/16), Steven Gerrard confirmed his retirement from football after over eighteen years in the professional game. Gerrard spent the first seventeen years of his career at boyhood club Liverpool before moving to LA Galaxy for the final eighteen months of his glittering career. The midfielder made 748 appearances for the two clubs,...

The Weight of the Shirt: Being a Red in America

My kids know the look.  My eyes narrow.  The left half of my face curl bunches up.  The forehead creases become visible from afar.  It means I’ve spotted another United shirt somewhere on the street here in Washington, D.C.  Or an Arsenal shirt.  And the kids these days love them some Spurs gear.  I’ll...

Why Emil Forsberg Should be a Target for Liverpool

Last January Liverpool were linked with a £6.6 million move for RB Leipzig attacker Emil Forsberg. It was an underwhelming link for fans who had expected Jurgen Klopp to bring in big name reinforcements and not players plying their trade in the Bundesliga 2 - the German equivalent of the Championship. As expected it was...

Observations from Liverpool’s win against Sunderland: Patience is key

The Reds weren't rampant. The floodgates didn't open like many had expected them to prior to kick-off.. Klopp's men didn't dismantle yet another side at Anfield. Instead, it was tense and a little uncomfortable as Sunderland threatened to frustrate the home side. They held out for 75 minutes but in the end Liverpool came away with...

Liverpool 2 Sunderland 0: Player Ratings

Liverpool overcame a battle of attrition and perseverance once again, the key difference being that Liverpool were rewarded for their efforts as the hosts came away with the three points and yet another clean-sheet. The celebration over the victory is sure to be tempered by the serious looking injury for Coutinho. This is how the...

How Gerrard Made Me a Liverpool Fan

This article is going to be a lot different than what I normally write up or tweet. It’s not going to be an analysis, it’s not going to be a tactical discussion, it’s not going to be a player profile, and it’s not going to be an opinionated piece that gets people to churn...

Sturridge Needs to Find His Place

There have been reports lately of a possible move away from Anfield for Daniel Sturridge and with a lack of game time under his belt, you can understand why the striker might have itchy feet. Liverpool are flying at the moment and Sportsbet, a bitcoin bet online bookmaker, have generally favoured them to overcome...

Why Don’t People Consider Firmino to be a Complete Striker?

Originally, a False 9 was a lone striker who, instead of staying high up the pitch like a traditional striker, would drop into midfield and look to drag the centre-back pairing into areas they weren't comfortable in to enable teammates to exploit the space they had created. Cesc Fabregas played it for Spain. Pep Guardiola...

Can Sturridge Replace Mane During AFCON or Does Klopp Need to Buy?

Saido Mane signed for Liverpool over five months ago in a £34 million deal from last Saturday's opponents Southampton. The Senegalese international has played in eleven of the Reds' twelve league games so far, interestingly the one game that he didn't appear in was the one game we have lost this season - the...

Liverpool vs Sunderland Preview: Reds must pounce on Black Cats

Liverpool will hope to return to winning ways this weekend as they host Sunderland at Anfield on Saturday, the side in second taking on the side second bottom. On a bitter November's day at Anfield there shouldn't be a beachball in sight, something that the Reds can use to their advantage in a bid to...

Liverpool v Sunderland – Key Battles

After a frustrating Saturday afternoon at St. Mary's where Liverpool did everything but find the back of the net, it is back to Anfield for the Reds, as they welcome cellar dwellers Sunderland. David Moyes's men are confident after a rousing 3-0 win over Hull City, but they will definitely face a completely different...

Goal-count needs factoring into Liverpool betting

These are good times to be a Liverpool supporter.  The club is flying high in the table, playing some great football and Jurgen Klopp’s team is one that you can have confidence backing in Premier league betting. The total goal-count in Liverpool’s first 12 Premier League matches of the season stands at 44 which is...

Tactical Analysis – Liverpool Struggle against Southampton’s Stubborn Defence

Going in to the international break Liverpool found themselves sitting proudly at the top of the English Premier League table. A 6-0 demolition of Watford had shown Liverpool at their best, full of incisive passing and vertical movement that rendered their opponent's defensive structure in pieces. International breaks are either a blessing or a curse...

Liverpool and the entertainment factor

Saturday was a bit of a football feast for me, I watched the intriguing 1-1 draw between two of our rivals: Manchester United and Arsenal. I followed that up with our game away to Southampton and finished the day with an enthralling battle between the German Bundesliga's finest: Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich; where...

Emre Can – A Creative Force

Anything other than a win now is considered a disaster if you're a Liverpool fan. Scanning social media after the Reds' 0-0 draw with Southampton on Saturday you would have been forgiven for thinking Klopp's men had lost. There was a lot of frustration mixed with disappointment topped off with some hysteria. It's a recipe...

Why are some treating Liverpool’s draw like the end of the world?

A very close friend of mine from primary school days is a huge Arsenal fan, and while the Gunners’ rivalry with Liverpool is not exactly toxic, it hasn’t stopped us from bickering about football over the years. One thing I have often ridiculed him for is the sheer hysterical nature of Arsenal supporters. In their...

Why Liverpool Need: Virgil Van Dijk

There are few clubs in the game at the moment with a better track record for developing players than Southampton. If they had been able to prevent their former young prodigies from leaving the club then they would currently be able to boast the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Adam Lallana, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain...

Kornmayer & Nemmer – Liverpool’s Best Signing of the Summer

On the 12th of April, in the midst of Liverpool Football Club’s hectic schedule during the latter stages of season’s past, Liverpool hijacked Bayern Munich’s backroom staff. Andreas Kornmayer, now Head of Fitness and Conditioning for the Reds was to move to Merseyside, joining Jurgen Klopp to make his players the fittest in the...

Who is Liverpool FC Target Quincy Promes?

James Pearce has linked Liverpool with a January move for Spartak Moscow attacker Quincy Promes. He's the latest in a long line of wide players to be linked with a move following various outlets reporting interest in Sardar Azmoun, Christian Pulisic and Cristian Pavon. The Liverpool Echo believe Spartak value Promes at around the £25...
