Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Key Stats from Roma 4-2 Liverpool: Nervy night at the Olympico

ALLEZ. Liverpool lost 4-2 in Rome, but it was enough to send them through on aggregate, as they saw off Roma 7-6 on aggregate to reach the Champions League final in Kiev. But what were the key stats from a magical if horribly tense night for Klopp’s side? Game of Two Halves On paper, this was...

Observations as Liverpool book their trip to Kiev

KIEV BABY! Get in you beauty, up the Champions League final Reds. We didn't really do it the hard way if you think about it, there was no comeback needed for us and even when Roma scored to bring the gap back to one there was no time. Of course, watching the game I was fully...

Second Leg Bonanza Sees Reds Advance to Kiev

So, Liverpool are a bit good. Jurgen's Reds booked their place in the Champions League final following a 4-2 defeat in Rome (7-6 aggregate win) with another supreme performance among Europe's elite. Only Liverpool fans would have been worried walking into a second-leg tie three goals to the good, with two late goals for the Italians...

Liverpool Player Ratings as the Reds book their tickets for Kiev

Allez, Allez, Allez! I’m tempted just to give them all 10’s.  OK, we lost the actual match 4-2, but one was a wacky own-goal and another a last second, questionable penalty.  Bottom line is that we didn’t look overly nervous as a collective and we had enough players with supreme performances to get us through....

Liverpool Refuse To Do It The Easy Way

Killer whales. Orcas. The most dominant force in the ocean. They could feed on tuna, penguins, small children, anything really. But what really seems to get an orca going is a nice, fat sea lion. Now, your average orca tries to catch a sea lion out in the open water when they're feeding or transiting...

Liverpool’s Depth Issues Are Being Overstated

A lot has been made of Liverpool’s depth issues recently, and particularly in attack. There are good reasons for this, as Liverpool have drawn three of their last four league games, two of them 0-0, as they attempted to balance crucial Premier League and Champions League fixtures. I myself wrote an article on the...

Buvac Departure: Short Term Blow but Long Term Gain?

The news of the sudden departure of Zeljko Buvac comes as a surprise to many. Personal reasons have been cited but the full details are currently unclear. Whether Buvac returns next season remains to be seen. The timing isn't great, particularly as the Reds go into the remaining handful of games that will define...

The Bobby Dazzler Gets Just Rewards for a Stellar Season

So, a video wherein a contract was signed without looking, and said person proceeded to leave the room whistling ‘Allez Allez Allez’. Liverpool’s announcement of Roberto Firmino extending his contract for five more years was about as Roberto Firmino as it could get. Firmino isn’t about being normal. Be it his role on the...

Five Potential Liverpool Targets from the Championship

With the summer fast approaching and Liverpool’s march towards Kiev in full effect, injuries are shining a light on Jürgen Klopp’s worrying lack of depth. A devastating long-term injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Danny Ings’ glaring lack of cutting edge in comparison to the men he usually replaces off the bench and Emre Can’s likely...

Top 4 Still in Sight Despite Klopp’s Limited Options

A disappointing goal-less draw at home to Stoke following the Lord Mayor's show, as Lineker put it last evening. But a point nonetheless and a point which should go a long way to securing top 4, come the end of the campaign. The real pressure is on Chelsea and that's ready-made for our approach. The...

Observations as Liverpool Endure Another Stalemate

Funny isn't it. Tuesday night saw one of the most free-flowing attacking performances Liverpool have produced this season, possibly ever under Klopp. Running riot against Roma, five goals in the Champions League semi-final was no small feat; an indication of what this side are capable of in the final third. The contrast between that performance...

Liverpool Player Ratings From Stoke Stalemate

A performance that makes you wonder why you bothered getting up for it in the first place. Yes, Liverpool have got bigger fish to fry at the moment, but in a season that's been defined by European nights it seems a little odd that we're not more worried about making sure we're in the Champions...

Roma Rampage Offers a Glimpse of What Midfield Can Do

Liverpool’s irrepressible front three once again stole the show as the Reds gloriously ripped Roma apart in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final but, for 80 minutes at least, it was close to a perfect team performance. As so often under Jurgen Klopp, a manager who licks his lips rather than quakes in...

Three Years And A Week: Liverpool 5 Roma 2

It’s the early evening of 19th April 2015 and I’m walking home from Kingsbury tube station. The sun is on my back and summer is on the way, but my heart is heavy. I pull my phone out of my pockets and press the necessary digits to find young Sachin Nakrani with whom I am writing...

Liverpool Must Avoid Summer Repeat Of 2002, 2009 & 2014

What do the summers of 2002, 2009 and 2014 all have in common? Liverpool ballsed up every one, that's what. On those three occasions, the Reds had a wonderful chance of kicking on after near-title-winning campaigns, only to come crashing back down to reality after recruiting poorly and allowing rivals to pull clear again. Gerard Houllier...

Reds Blast Roma Despite Late Wake Up Call
