Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Deconstructing Steven Gerrard’s Start at Rangers

As Rangers fans celebrated luring Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard to Ibrox for a maiden senior management gig this summer, those at Anfield watched on with intrigued eyes. How would a man that had only experienced management at Youth Academy level fare when thrown in at the deep end, with limited funds, at a club where...

Stop Worrying About Mohamed Salah

Mo Salah has made a slightly below-par start to the season, and one that was exacerbated by his poor performance and misplaced pass that led to Mbappe’s equaliser in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over PSG on Tuesday night. But given that I am an unapologetic Mo Salah fan and have recently written articles saying that...

Observations as Firmino fires Liverpool to opening European win

And breathe. Liverpool are up and running in Europe once again by virtue of Roberto Firmino's last-gasp winner against PSG at Anfield. Three points that looked as if they'd been lost wrestled back by one moment of genius from the Brazilian - who needs more than one eye? Speaking of eyes, here's what I saw with...

Liverpool 3-2 PSG: Man of the Match

Just three days after beating one of the best sides in the Premier League, Liverpool underlined their European ambitions by comprehensively outplaying, and battling past, a member of the continental elite. After Mohamed Salah's frustrating evening took a nightmarish turn when he conceded possession in the middle of the park in the lead-up to PSG's...

Liverpool Left Back Andy Robertson Now Emerging as a Leader

Andy Robertson's journey to becoming Scotland skipper and an Anfield regular following in the footsteps of Tartan team icons like Alan Hansen and Kenny Dalglish is a curious one. Released by Celtic in his early teens for being too small, he's proved the Bhoys academy coaches completely wrong by forging a top-flight career on both sides of...

Liverpool 3-2 PSG: One-Eyed Firmino Makes His Mark

It’d be wrong to suggest this isn’t one of the toughest groups of the competition; Napoli and PSG present two scintillating trips while Red Star Belgrade are hardly pushovers having won the Serbian league last season. Under the floodlights, bouncing to the tune of ‘Allez Allez Allez’, Liverpool stepped out prepped and ready for...

Liverpool 3-2 PSG: Player Ratings as Bobby dazzles Anfield late

Liverpool made Anfield fret, but Liverpool had more late European drama at Anfield, as an injury time winner from Roberto Firmino gave the Reds a 3-2 win over Paris St. Germain and a winning start to their Champions League campaign. Daniel Sturridge's header and James Milner's penalty put the Reds on course, but Thomas Meunier...

The Firmino 9

Roberto Firmino was the perfect the false 9, then Klopp's number 9 and now the Firmino 9. Has Bobby redefined the centre-forward position for Liverpool during Klopp's tenure? When Liverpool signed Firmino from Hoffenheim, he was known as a goal scoring attacking midfield. Under Rodgers, he played as a wide forward and didn't appear to be...

Dominic Solanke – The Forgotten Cause

Dom Solanke is yet to even be named in the matchday squad this season. Having not played a game of football since pre-season, in which he did not particularly impress, this is only going to hinder the progress of the former Chelsea player. In his debut season he managed to score one goal in 21 appearances,...

Why football clubs are crazy about eSports?

Reel back a decade or two and nobody would have taken you seriously had you told them that electronic sports are going to be a multi-billion industry in 2018. Least of all serious, mainstream athletes. Playing competitive video games used to be the preserve of basement-dwelling riff-raff or social no-goods and wastrels. Now, these...

Integrating Fabinho and the Need for Patience

Patience isn’t a word that gets heeded much in the modern era of football. Instant gratification has been normalised and expected, and signings are often cast aside as “flops” in as short a space as six months. And that’s fine because some signings don’t work. But, if one casts their mind back to the final...

Tough UCL Group Presents Tough Choices For Klopp

Liverpool’s Champions League campaign kicks off on Tuesday, with the automatic qualification to the group stage giving the Reds some breathing room in the opening few weeks of the season to focus on the Premier League. Liverpool leave Spurs bewildered in London

Liverpool aren't technically top of the table, surpassed by Chelsea on goal difference as the sun goes down on this Premier League Saturday. The Reds are, however, undefeated, having only allowed two goals in five and eased past Spurs in London. Liverpool now have more away points against top-six opponents than they amassed in...

Spurs 1-2 Liverpool: Man of the Match

A late Tottenham Hotspur goal made for an unnecessarily nervy finish at Wembley, but the eventual 2-1 scoreline certainly belied Liverpool's dominance. The Reds were, for the most part, in control against one of the best teams in the Premier League. They were able to repel Spurs' relatively rare attacks and sliced open an oft-revered...

Player Ratings as Liverpool makes it five from five against Spurs

Last season saw Liverpool’s visit to Wembley bring about one of their worst performances. Riddled with individual errors and defensive ineptitude, Spurs were able to beat the Reds at their own game and put down a marker of how far Klopp still had to take his side. Yet, it was a role reversal on...

The Truth About Mohamed Salah’s “Poor” Start to the Season

After a long and drawn out transfer saga last summer, Mo Salah joined the Reds with much optimism surrounding the Egyptian’s arrival, but no one could predict what would happen as the season unfolded. Pressure on Klopp to Rotate Liverpool’s Starting Eleven
