Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. One Year Under Klopp – The Milli Of All Trades

When Liverpool acquired James Milner on a free transfer in the summer of 2015, question marks were raised regarding Brendan Rodgers' decision to bring in the former Manchester City utility player with the view to play him in the centre midfield position. The consensus amongst the fans was that despite getting him on a...

Liverpool Facing a Potential Crossroads

Liverpool's early season form has been good, flat out exciting at times, but there have also been some causes for concern. I don't want to get all negative or try to bring down the vibrant atmosphere of late because I share the joy of our side playing swashbuckling football and doing well thus far. However,...

Liverpool’s Squad Depth is Starting to Show

The wheels threaten to come off Liverpool's good start to the season when within a space of a week both Adam Lallana and Gini Wijnaldum picked up injuries and with fierce rivals Manchester United on the horizon two thirds of the Reds' starting midfield looked set to miss the tie. One of the few...

Liverpool and Man United – A Centuries’ Old Rivalry

In the mid-1990s I was in a band. Don’t bother Googling my name along with the words ‘hits by’ or ‘world tour’. We played two gigs and broke up when the bass player went to play jazz in a London hotel, but back then we were going to build empires with our jangly guitared take...

Another Crocked Liverbird: Liverpool’s Knee-Hilistic Past

Some weeks make you wish God had come up with something other than knees - weeks when you can't wear shorts for fear of seeing your own knees in a mirror and losing all sense of what it means to 'be'. It has been a year since the beginning of one such week, when as...

When did Liverpool supporters become so stubborn?

I promised myself I would make the most of the lack of domestic action this weekend and enjoy a productive football-free weekend for once in my life. Instead, my Saturday was spent with a vicious bout of man flu, and my Sunday consisted of bickering with fellow Liverpool supporters on Twitter. Pathetic, really. Having expressed my...

Sturridge’s Positive Development Under Klopp is Worth Noticing

When Jürgen Klopp arrived at Liverpool, much was made over whether Daniel Sturridge - the Reds' star man - would suit the German's high-intensity pressing style of football. Comparisons were made between Sturridge's inability to fit into the style of play, and Christian Benteke's. Then came Southampton away. Southampton 1-6 Liverpool, eight weeks into Klopp's tenure. "Now...

Henderson – A Leader At Last

Happy Klopp anniversary everyone! Ok, I'm a little late. Sorry. Nonetheless, during these lengthy and joyous annual celebrations of Anfield life under Klopp, I’ve decided to take a look at our captain, Jordan Henderson, and what’s changed for the skipper under his manager. As he hardly played under Rodgers last season due to injury, it’s...

Divock Origi: Klopp’s most improved player?

As part of a series celebrating Jurgen Klopp's first year in charge, we take a look at some of the candidates for Most Improved Player since his appointment in October 2015. There's been a number of changes at Anfield since the German manager took charge but the most important difference has been an improvement in...

The Dejan Lovren question

The question surrounding the transformation undergone by Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is not only complex, but his upturn in fortune is also a mystery to many a Reds fan. I would like to cast your minds back to August 29, 2015 and Liverpool had just been humiliated, humbled and simply outclassed by a West Ham...

Adam Lallana: Klopp’s Most Improved Player

It's been 12 months since Jurgen Klopp took over at Liverpool and already the Reds have been transformed. The side that came so close to winning the 2013-14 season was but a shadow in the dying weeks of Brendan Rodgers' reign. Since taking over, Klopp has rejuvenated his side, transformed the team's philosophy and...

A Year of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Reds, can you believe it’s been a year since the charismatic German took over as Liverpool FC manager? That moment when your wildest football dreams came true, well they certainly did for me. Jurgen Klopp has been in his post for a year and to say it’s been eventful, is a gross understatement. Let's rewind...

Patience Required with Loris Karius

Football can be strange. Fans are often found moaning about the current state of the sport, about how players are overindulged and clubs are greedy.  How everything in the player's existence is excessive - the wages, the cars and the lives they live.  So it's kind of ironic that in reality we as fans are just...

Klopp’s Squad Changes Analysed – What a Difference a Year Makes

It's flown by hasn't it? Klopp's appointment as Liverpool manager doesn't seem like it was a year ago. Everything about him at the club still feels fresh and new but at the same time it feels like he's part of the furniture. It's testament to the man that he's managed to come in and...

A look at the tactical changes at Liverpool since Klopp’s arrival

It's flown by hasn't it? Klopp's appointment as Liverpool manager doesn't seem like it was a year ago. Everything about him at the club still feels fresh and new but at the same time it feels like he's part of the furniture. It's testament to the man that he's managed to come in and...

The return of ‘Fortress Anfield’ can inspire Liverpool to Premier League glory

When the Premier League fixtures were released in June, there was immediate dismay from the majority of Liverpool supporters. Liverpool’s tough start left their hopes of getting off to a flyer in tatters, and their rivals had all been handed far more inviting starts to the campaign. The Reds had to face Arsenal, Tottenham, Leicester City...

Henderson Analysis Shows Why Liverpool Need Dahoud

There's been a lot of talk recently surrounding Jordan Henderson silencing his critics after an impressive run of games as the deepest midfielder. People cite the worldie at Stamford Bridge and his dominant performances against Leicester and Hull City as evidence that he's acclimatising to his new role. For all the unfair criticism levelled at him...

Lallana’s latest injury – a blessing in disguise?

Sharp I know, but bear with me. For Liverpool fans who were at work/at some family do/in a cave this weekend, you’ll be disappointed, initially at least, to hear of Adam Lallana’s injury in the battling win at Swansea. For over an hour of the game The Reds had to do without his guile, energy...

Liverpool’s Rollercoaster Ride Ends – Consistency Inevitable

It’s been a very entertaining year for Liverpool fans across all seven corners of the world so far. Scintillating games from October last year with masterful performances against Chelsea, Manchester City, Villareal and Borussia Dortmund, followed by disappointing results against West Ham, Watford, Southampton and Newcastle was indeed a rollercoaster ride last season, as said...

Klopp’s Half-Time Adjustments Help Liverpool Overcome Swansea

A match away at Swansea City should not be much of a concern for Liverpool this season. The way that the side from Anfield are playing they should have been able to blow past their opponents with relative ease. In the end though Liverpool had to settle for a 2-1 victory. Surely though winning...

The Meaning of YNWA and Humanity That Tears Down Borders

At a time when more and more people are hesitant in terms of the removal of borders and the benefits of social media, one sincere expression of humanity can refute at least some of these doubts. This is a story about a guy from Bulgaria who lives in the US and transmits further his...

Did Coutinho pass the Centre-Midfield Audition?

Philippe Coutinho in centre-midfield in a Jurgen Klopp side. It was an experiment many Liverpool fans had wanted to see for quite some time but it's unlikely many would have wanted the switch to happen under such circumstances. Adam Lallana, a player who was playing arguably his best football since signing for the Reds, limped...

How do Liverpool compare to previous 2nd place finishes?

Liverpool’s form has picked up, the team seem to be gelling, and there’s a lot of belief among the Anfield faithful that something very special could be upon us and our beloved Reds. This I expect. What I didn’t expect, however, was for neutrals and bookies to be quite so on board as well. Last I...

James Milner – Right At Left-Back

At the end of the transfer window, Jurgen Klopp looked at his left back options, nodded and moved on. With Alberto Moreno throwing himself about with reckless abandon, the German gave the shirt to the 30 year old James Milner, knowing that the Yorkshireman would simply get on with it. Left back was done...

Danny Ings bridges football and reality gap

There has always been the resounding criticism towards the business of football that footballers are out tune with reality with fancy sports cars, ballooned wages and the vast array of public affection (and hatred) clouding players’ minds. What is often seen with this privilege that footballers enjoy is, exaggerated egos, societal attitudes that places themselves...

Karius needs time to adapt not tons of abuse

Liverpool moved into second place, at least temporarily, after a 2-1 win away to Swansea, meaning the Reds go into the international break off the back of four straight league wins. A time for Reds fans to celebrate, to smile about the work Jürgen Klopp has put in so far? Not in some cases...

Klopp is Fully Utilising His Time On The Training Pitch

Jurgen Klopp has done a lot of good since being appointed as Liverpool manager, and he's been rightly lauded for it, but one area that went under the radar was his ability on the training pitch. He's able to identify player profiles and place them in areas of the pitch which maximise their strengths....

Observations from Liverpool’s comeback win against Swansea

Four consecutive weekends now. That's how long Liverpool have resisted the urge to ruin my weekend. Life is good. I could get used to being able to watch Match of the Day safely in the knowledge we've taken 3 points away from our match. Not since 2013/14 have fans been afforded such a luxury...

Swansea 1 Liverpool 2: Player Ratings

Liverpool showed great character and resilience as they came back from a one goal deficit and a poor first-half performance to take all three points from the Liberty Stadium. Such wins show the mental toughness of the whole team, a trait which every champion team possess. This is how the Reds fared. Loris Karius (5) - Karius...

Five Players LFC Would Happily Welcome Back Now

Alan Kennedy  The left-back scored two European Cup winning goals - need I say more? It was obvious this shortlist would contain a left-back and given there's been very few who have made the position their own in the Premier League era, it's no surprise I went for a solid performer of the past. John...
