The Transfer Show: Slot, Alonso and Liverpool’s Summer Crossroads

Trev Downey and Dave Davis assess the growing pressure on Arne Slot and why the Burnley draw became such a pivotal moment in the fan narrative. They explore how Xabi Alonso’s availability is shaping supporter opinion, the divide between UK-based reporting and European speculation, and why Liverpool appear determined to wait until the summer before making any managerial decision. This segment looks at belief, risk and whether Liverpool are prepared to hold their nerve while the noise around the dugout continues to grow. Learn more about your ad choices. The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. Observations as Liverpool continue to progress despite failing to impress

Liverpool put in another drab performance at Huddersfield, continuing their positive start with a 1-0 win but failing to showcase any of the frenetic transitional play that had them on everyone’s lips last season. Here are the observations from the match. Salah makes his mark Despite claims that he’s had a bad season, Salah showed his class...

Huddersfield 0-1 Liverpool: Who Was Man of the Match?

Liverpool have equalled their best-ever start to a Premier League season but the increasingly frustrating wait for the Reds to come alive goes on. Mohamed Salah's tidy finish on 24 minutes should have set the visitors on their way to a comfortable victory, but fans would spend the final portion of the game longing for...

Huddersfield 0-1 Liverpool – Can The Real Liverpool Please Stand Up?

P.H.E.W. That was painful, even infuriating at times, but in the end, Liverpool came away with a 1-0 win against Huddersfield at the John Smith's Stadium to stay joint-top of the Premier League. Mo Salah's 24th-minute goal, set up by Xherdan Shaqiri, was enough for Klopp's men to win on an evening where their...

Player ratings as Liverpool limp past Huddersfield

Mohamed Salah's first half strike didn't stop it being a Saturday to forget, but did ensure Liverpool claimed all three points in Yorkshire. Without a win this season, Huddersfield came determined to spring an upset and will feel they deserved at least a point as they often worried a Liverpool side devoid of organisation and...

How Liverpool Secured That Elusive Squad Depth

KIEV, Ukraine: The 2018 Champions League final evenly poised at one all, Liverpool managing to offer a response via a Sadio Mane equaliser after a howler from Loris Karius which gifted Real Madrid a second-half lead. Zinedine Zidane looks to his bench and summons Gareth Bale to make an impact. One of a many...

Liverpool v Huddersfield Preview – Potential Key Battles

A wretched international break filled with injuries is over. For the Liverpool players, it's time to get back on the road, as they get ready to travel to Huddersfield for the late kick-off on Saturday. Huddersfield are winless in the Premier League, having only managed three draws from their eight games, and against a Liverpool...

Can Momentum Be Liverpool’s Greatest Title Weapon?

No team thrives more with momentum behind them than Liverpool. We are an emotional fanbase and when things are going well, the Reds can become an unstoppable force, as we have witnessed throughout history. Using modern examples - I know, football existed well before 1992 - nothing stands out more than 2004/05 in that respect. Nobody even...

Time for Liverpool FC To Show Their Depth

Liverpool have a deeper squad than they have in previous years. This is not a fact that I’m going to dispute, although I’d definitely make (and will make) some arguments that that depth isn’t as deep as maybe it’s being made out in some areas, and certainly hasn’t drastically improved over the summer. Nevertheless, Klopp...

Adios, Mi Amigo – Almost Time To Say Goodbye to Alberto Moreno

The international break is typically a time for everyone to take a break and recharge the batteries during a long season. The most you can usually hope for during the week off is having all your players return healthy (which rarely happens for Liverpool) and avoiding any bad news. Yet, a piece of Liverpool...

An Oxlade-Chamberlain Shaped Hole

Man City’s record-breaking title win last season saw them break the 100 point barrier, scoring 106 goals and falling to just two defeats. Liverpool though proved a barrier too big to overcome. Jurgen Klopp’s side won three of the four meetings between the two sides last season – with an emphatic 5-0 defeat at the...

“I Can’t Watch” – Why Vlog at Anfield?

We are all mad about football because of the ecstasy and euphoria that goes with it. The inevitable comedowns are toppled by the highs. And those highs are the best kind. We remember them and cherish them. Just like most substances, they only give us an appetite for more. You could call it an addiction...

Liverpool Need A Playmaker

On-ball (in possession) Off-ball (out of possession) Transition (between possession) These are the three phases of football. Liverpool are without a doubt one of, if not the best team in the world in transition, that is, the moment in which a team transfers from a defensive shape to an attacking one, or vice-versa. The speed at which Liverpool...

Is the Bobby Dazzler Really a Striker?

In mid-June of 2015, it was reported by multiple media sources, both in England and abroad, that Manchester United had agreed to sign an up-and-coming Brazilian midfielder, Roberto Firmino, for a fee of around £13m from German club, 1899 Hoffenheim. The action-packed style of the young man had some of the Europe’s top scouts...

The lesson Fabinho should learn from Andrew Robertson

Liverpool fans are dying to see more of their £39 million man Fabinho Tavares, with sightings of the imposing Brazilian still surprisingly rare after his summer switch from Monaco. While everyone has been quick to quash any negativity surrounding his lack of game time, citing the arrivals of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andrew Robertson as perfect...

Are Liverpool Becoming Boring?

MANCHESTER, England: The walls were closing in on Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Manchester United as a hugely unfancied Newcastle side, managed by (one of) the Portuguese’s biggest rivals visited Old Trafford, to try and seal the 3-time Premier League champion (as he is constantly reminding us) managers fate. The history of bad blood between the...

10 Young Players That Should be Catching Liverpool’s Eye (Part 2)

Tonguy Ndombele Lyon’s elegantly destructive central midfielder Tanguy Ndombele was called up to the French National Squad for the first time for this international break, and that comes off an extremely impressive 2018. After signing permanently for Lyon in the summer (for a meagre £10 million) after spending the 2017/18 season on loan there from...

Midfield Reinforcements For Liverpool: Pre-contract Targets To Add Creativity

Liverpool's midfield benefitted from £100m in investment over the summer with the surprise signing of Monaco's Fabinho, and the arrival of Naby Keita - signed from RBL last summer. However, with the injury to Oxlade-Chamberlain, we've still had to suffer through games with Gini Wijnaldum, James Milner and Jordan Henderson in the engine room. As...

Explaining Liverpool’s Pressing Against Manchester City

In Liverpool’s most recent contest, The Reds achieved a 0-0 draw at home to title rivals, Manchester City. The match was cagey, conservative and respectful, and despite Liverpool restricting City to just two shots on target, some viewers weren’t happy with the home side's work without the ball. The main viewer that I’m referencing...

Liverpool’s Season Starts Here

The day that you arrive at a holiday destination can often have a strange feel to it. You’re still a bit jaded after a long flight, drive or however you’ve made your way there, and you don’t feel completely in holiday mode until you wake up the following morning. Call it a strange comparison - it...

A Strangely Underrated Start to the Season for Liverpool

With the international break now upon us, it's a good time to reflect on Liverpool's start to the season. As the final whistle rang around Anfield after the 0-0 draw against Manchester City, it signalled the fourth consecutive game without a win for the Reds. This comes after quite possibly Liverpool's worst ever performance under...

Liverpool FC – The Difference A Year Makes

Looking back, it’s really interesting to see where Liverpool are now compared to where they were at the same point in the previous season. So I thought it would be interesting to look at the side that started the opening eight games of last year, and compare and contrast where they are compared to...

Assets and Liabilities: The Fine Margins of Football

In their 2013 book, The Numbers Game, Chris Anderson and David Sally postulated that football was, in fact, a weak link sport - improving the worst player is more beneficial to a team’s success than an improvement on their best player. On the surface, this seems like a tough pill to swallow. How would adding,...

Liverpool 0-0 Man City: Who was the Man of the Match?

Riyad Mahrez's late penalty miss has left Liverpool fans pondering whether their side's goalless draw with Manchester City represents a point gained or two points dropped. On the one hand, the Reds could be thankful that they were not punished for what was an uninspiring performance, bereft of the anticipated vigour, but on the other,...

Key Stats as Reds’ Unbeaten Streak Clings On

Liverpool secured a breathless point at Anfield to go into the second international break still unbeaten following a 0-0 draw with Champions Manchester City. But what were the key stats from a hard-fought contest? Reds’ Attack Still Misfiring It would be unfair to describe Liverpool’s front three as going through a crisis, but there are clearly...

Liverpool 0-0 Manchester City: Mahrez miss costs Citizens rare Anfield win

Liverpool kept their unbeaten Premier League start intact, just, as Riyad Mahrez's late penalty miss cost Manchester City the chance for a first league win at Anfield since 2003. A stalemate was the last thing expected between the country's two finest teams, but a mutual respect between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola saw chances few...

Player Ratings as Liverpool and City draw a blank

Far from the frenetic games we saw between these two last season, this was a pretty dull affair with Liverpool and Manchester City both locking horns in a goalless draw. There was drama, such as Riyad Mahrez's late penalty which was as successful as when Phil Jones steps up to the spot, alongside chances for...

Why Liverpool’s Defeat to Napoli Isn’t the End of the World

It was always going to come as something of a hammer blow, but Liverpool's first defeat that they really warranted being on the end of this season really does feel rather rubbish. It's not so much the fact that the Reds lost, but more so the fact that they went down with a bit of...

Is Gomez Actually Outperforming Van Dijk?

Cast your mind back to the latter stages of last season, when a clearly unfit Joe Gomez was struggling to impress. Utilised at right-back, the 21-year-old was a weak presence in frustrating draws against relegated pair Stoke City and West Brom, conceding a last-gasp free-kick that proved key in the latter. With Liverpool doing their best...

Aaron Ramsey is a terrible idea for Liverpool

Have you ever bought something gimmicky just to impress your friends and then regretted it later? In the fall of 1993, I confidently strolled into the first day of school rocking the LA Gear inflatable pump sneakers. And yes, they were called Regulators… mount up. It immediately dawned on me that the pump was going...
