The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. Napoli 1-0 Liverpool: What went wrong?

In light of Liverpool's first truly meaningful loss of the season, perspective is important. The Reds are joint-top of the Premier League and are still well-placed to progress to the Champions League knockouts with back-to-back games against relative minnows Red Star to come. Still, the quite shambolic nature of the performance must be recognised. Some...

Milner The Man As Liverpool’s Midfield Thrives

When Liverpool bought Fabinho this summer, to accompany the already arriving Naby Keita, there was an expectation that the two would be an absolutely tour de force in Liverpool’s midfield. And whilst there is ample evidence to suggest that that will be the case when the two work their way into starting regularly for...

Player Ratings as Reds are neutralised in Naples

The Reds were never at the races, with David Ospina not having to make a single save in the home goal. Onto Sunday, where it has to be better. Here are your ratings. Three players come away with credit Alisson...

The Year of the Studge?

When Daniel Sturridge entered the fray on Saturday night, there was a sense of something resembling relief. Even before he scored, the truth was that you felt Liverpool had a better chance of something happening with him on the pitch. That’s always been the impression with Sturridge. Whatever you think of the player, it’s hard...

Chelsea 1 Liverpool 1: A Tactical Breakdown

First of all, an apology from myself. I'm awfully sorry I haven't been able to discuss perhaps two of the most exciting games of the season - LFC vs. Spurs and LFC vs. PSG, as unfortunately, I have been without WiFi for the past two weeks. To make up for that, this is a...

Alisson Becker – Passing His First Big Test

Daniel Sturridge has rightfully gotten most of the attention after the nail-biting finale of the clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge - what a strike that was. One the best compliments for that shot would be that even Alisson couldn't have saved it. Liverpool's new Brazilian keeper didn't have a whole lot to do...

Mo Salah Doesn’t Care About Being the Best Player in the World, and Neither Should You

London, England - After the events on Monday night at the FIFA best awards, Luka Modric has been named the best men’s player of the year. Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool: Who Was Man of the Match For Liverpool?

After a series of glorious opportunities went begging, it was beginning to seem that it would simply not be Liverpool's day at Stamford Bridge, only for Daniel Sturridge to single-handedly stave off the agony of an impending defeat and spark celebrations befitting of a victory. From Eden Hazard's opener onwards, Liverpool were, without doubt, the...

Observations as Liverpool and Chelsea share the spoils

Liverpool, courtesy of a wonder strike from Sturridge late on, rescued a point at the Bridge, a point they deserved considering the display put in. Going by the performance of Chelsea, not many teams would get points at Chelsea, so this could be a big point as the season progresses. The key observations from this...

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool: Sturridge stonker preserves unbeaten record

Daniel Sturridge scored one of his finest career goals to earn Liverpool a late point at Stamford Bridge. Eden Hazard’s first-half strike had given Chelsea a lead that they preserved with comfort for much of the game, Mohamed Salah and his substitute Xherdan Shaqiri missing the Reds’ most glorious chances before Sturridge struck. Klopp opted to...

I'm going to spend my next two days exclusively watching that goal over and over again. If you aren't, I'm judging you. Here's how the rest...

Set Pieces – Fuelling the Reds’ Flying Start

No matter where you are from your local match commentator probably said something like: "Set pieces - Liverpool's long-term Achilles heel" when Eric Lamela scored against the Reds last at Wembley. That line is simply ignorant. Liverpool's set piece defence has been slowly and steadily improving for three seasons now. The same applies for...

Chelsea Cup Defeat Highlights How Far Liverpool Have Come

That winning run wasn't going to last forever, was it? Any Liverpool defeat generally has to be considered disappointing - although some under Roy Hodgson felt like a blessing in disguise - and Wednesday's League Cup loss to Chelsea did sting a little, especially given the nature of it. In the grand scheme of things, it...

Why Liverpool’s Recent Carabao Cup Woes Aren’t Too Worrying

For the second time in consecutive seasons, Liverpool crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle as they were beaten 1-2 at home by Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea. Despite putting in a fairly dominant display and having plenty of chances to seal their place in the fourth round, the Reds fell to defeat thanks...

Were the Reds Outplayed by Chelsea or Played out of the Game by VAR Incompetence?

Chelsea put two past Liverpool to send them crashing out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, sealing the deal with a stunner from Eden Hazard. Liverpool’s “Season-Defining” Week

You could be forgiven for thinking, going into what looks to be an absolutely huge week for Liverpool, that this was a season-defining week for Jürgen Klopp and his team. Liverpool 1-2 Chelsea: Who was Man of the Match?

As the final whistle sounded to confirm Liverpool's first defeat of the season, fans quickly found consolation. The Reds clearly have bigger fish to fry, not least come Saturday when they will bid for revenge in a much more significant Premier League meeting. Still, though, the match was lost in immensely frustrating fashion as Chelsea...

Player Ratings as Reds are rumbled by Hazard

There’s a point at 1-0 where Sarri sends on Eden Hazard because Chelsea are losing and they’re not finishing above Liverpool in the league anyway. Klopp doesn’t send Salah on because Liverpool are winning and they might finish above Manchester City. One amazing goal later and we’re all moody, get a win on Saturday and it’ll all...

Virgil Van Dijk & Joe Gomez: Liverpool’s Cornerstones?

I for one have been very excited about the form of Liverpool's defence of late, especially the pairing of Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk. This partnership may only be six games into the season, but there's the making of something special forming here. As football fans, we love to compare players to legends that...

Discussion: The Rival Player I’d Have at Liverpool

Personally, I love a hypothetical within the realms of football. They allow one to examine the possibilities and justify why their selection would be viable. Of course, these hypotheticals can border on the edges of insanity, almost irrelevance i.e. Which footballer would be able to the most kick-ups with a live chicken? (probably Leo...

Trent Alexander-Arnold Urgently Needs Bigger Pockets

Almost two years ago to the day, Trent Alexander-Arnold was one of the youngest players on the pitch as he created the opening goal, scored to put his side 4-0 ahead and was booked just before half time for half time in an all-action right-back performance for Liverpool U23 against Tottenham U23. He dominated...
