Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back with another episode of Scouser Tommies, the first one since Virgil Van Dijk lifted the 20th League Title for the Reds in front of a packed Anfield.. It’s been a while, but Jay has been busy, to be fair. And whilst he had extra special reasons to celebrate, the whole city has been in a party mood for quite some time now. (Not quite the whole city, of course; some isolated areas haven’t had a sniff of a title party for 30 years now!) On this week’s show, Jim and Jay look back on that momentous day when Virgil lifted that trophy, the iconic image of the skipper holding that shiny chunk of silver aloft that will live long in the memory. They also touch on the contrasting feelings that came out of that victory parade, a day that had been filled with pride as countless Reds made the pilgrimage to see their kings, celebrating in typical good humor, before the horrific scenes that, as awful as they were, thankfully—miraculously—weren’t as bad as we all feared they would be. The response, too, from those in the city, the offers of help, said so much about the true Liverpool. With a certain former Liverpool player swapping his No. 66 for the shirt usually worn by the sub before squad numbers came in, Jay and Jim look at how the feelings have started to change from those who were critical of the reception the player got from the fans he claims he loves. More and more see just why that reception was deserved. He’s not the first, he won’t be the last, but as Jim and Jay discuss, he’s done it in the worst possible way and ensured he won’t be remembered in the same way as some of those true legends whose names grace the official LFC museum—long after their boots were hung up for the last time. From tears in front of the Sky cameras to showing off the kind of fluent Spanish you don’t pick up overnight, it’s been quite the planned departure. More important than any of that is the fact that Liverpool have some new faces on the way in, the club showing true intent this summer to ensure Arne Slot has what he needs to turn one league title into a period of sustained success. Jay and Jim look at the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, a direct and exciting replacement for that player who’s just left. Most exciting of all is the impending record transfer of Florian Wirtz, Frimpong’s Leverkusen teammate, and Jay explains just how popular that player is amongst his own countrymen. Those signings, along with the likely arrival of Milos Kerkez, are a massive statement of intent from the champions. Isn’t it nice saying, “The Champions”, by the way? The hosts talk about how last season was basically a "test run" for Arne and wonder just how he’s going to fare when he gets his hands on the players he’s had a hand in signing himself. Last season was just the beginning; will we see a new style of play in the next campaign? Will these new signings allow him to truly stamp his authority on the team's style? To wrap things up, there’s a moment for Jay and Jim to point out some social media posts that caught their eyes, with an old face who’s still not welcome in isolated parts of the city, and a post from Liverpool Airport that really put a certain ex-player in his place. Liverpool Football Club, once a European powerhouse, found itself out of depth when they resurfaced in the Champions League two seasons ago, facing Real Madrid in the group stage, eventually failing to secure a spot in the knockout stages. The past six or so years, bar a magnificent 13/14 campaign, was a period to forget...

Klopp’s Adding Experience to the Liverpool Squad

Football blurs logic. In most walks of life when you say somebody is experienced at a job it means they have firsthand experience in that role, it doesn't mean they're just getting on age wise. Yet in football there seems to be a misconception that when a player in their late 20's/early 30's joins a...

Liverpool FC: The Need for a Balanced Midfield

Jurgen Klopp's favoured formation appears to be 4-2-3-1, so with this attacking format the two central midfielders have a huge role to play in respect of providing cover for the defence. This piece looks at if currently Liverpool have the players to provide that balance and if not, what do they require, to try...

Jürgen Klopp – No Room For Sentimentality

With the transfer window open and in full swing, it's a time when Liverpool supporters completely lose all their inhabitations and start offering up players to the footballing gods, in hope of the gift of a positive season ahead. To the fanbase, most players are ripe to be the sacrificial lamb, very few are...

Mamadou Sakho: President of the Liverpool Country

As things stand, Mamadou Sakho is without a doubt, the most loved player of Liverpool Football Club. Since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2013, he has stolen the hearts of Liverpool fans with his amusing, humble personality. I remember once he hopped into a stand filled with Liverpool fans, and acted...

How Liverpool Will Make Your Dreams Come True

One would think that a manager boasting two Bundesliga titles, a German Cup and a UEFA Champions League final appearance, could take a mediocre team like Liverpool to the next level. But after failing to qualify for the Champions League following a heartbreaking loss to Sevilla (despite taking the lead in the first half),...

Jurgen Klopp, Fans, and the Transfer Window Fume

The synchronization of pistons that makes an engine run smoothly, percussion which provides the soul of music, a dance performance completely in sync with a song, or a football team consisting of eleven individuals playing a game in perfect coordination. That’s chemistry. A complex emotional or psychological interaction between people is an element vital...

The search for a Liverpool Captain

A captain is something Liverpool has taken for granted this may well be due to our two previous captains being Sami Hyppia and Steven Gerrard. Both of them, not a single person could questioned, Gerrard took over the armband from Hyppia on October 15th against Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana and from that moment until...

FSG and the Wage Bill Woe

The feeling on social media around Liverpool is a little eerie as of late. The club have made some impressive signings in Loris Karius and Sadio Mane and look set to practically recoup what they spent on Christian Benteke yet the supporters online aren't how you'd imagine them to be after such news. They're...

Klopp and Liverpool: The greatest challenge in world football?

When Jürgen Klopp was appointed in October of 2015 he promised to deliver a league title within four years. Yet the prospect of winning a league title & achieving consistent success over the upcoming three seasons looks a far fetched one, especially with both Manchester clubs strengthening at an alarming rate, and building upon...

Selling Seats at Anfield: Trying to Understand

I don’t really know how to start this but I’m going to go with: I’m trying to understand. When the news started to hit social media that Liverpool Football Club were selling the seats from the old Main Stand (for obviously too much money), my initial reaction was, “…and?”. You see, this type of thing...

Why Joel is Ma-tip For Bargain Of The Summer!

Joel Matip officially joined Liverpool Football Club last week, after agreeing to a move from his boyhood club Schalke on a free transfer in January. The highly rated ball playing centre-back joins a league rich with defensive talent, and a fan base who know a good defender when they see one; the problem is,...

Liverpool Cleverly Embracing Sell-On Clauses

Buy-back clauses. Percentage of future sales. Neil Jones of the Liverpool Echo commented about how Liverpool are now adopting a more continental approach when selling players. Copying the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid by adding clauses into sales. English clubs are slow on the uptake, It's one of the many things European clubs...

Liverpool FC, Learning From Leicester

This past season, Leicester City have taught every football fan in the world a very important lesson... but nobody seems to have listened. Sure, everyone can grasp the scale of the season long miracle that occurred, and yeah we all learned not to count out the little guys, but that’s not the real lesson...

Dejan Lovren: Jury Still In Deliberation

Much has been said about Dejan Lovren since his big money move to Liverpool Football Club in the summer of 2014. The expectation of becoming the leader of Liverpool’s defense had quickly faded and also coincided with fans slamming the gavel on him as a failed piece of business. Error after error was also...

A look at Liverpool Target Ante Coric

The Balkans aren't renown as hot bed for football talent but they're steadily going about piecing together their very own golden generation. In modern day football players now need to be as talented with the ball as they are industrious off of it. Croatian footballers tend to have the knack of merging great technical...

Liverpool Football Club stands at a crossroads. A club blessed with the most illustrious of histories, struggling to find success in the modern game. For too long our supporters have focused on the clubs past achievements, past players and past managers. A fanbase living in the splendour or the squalor, of years long past....

The Clash Of Personalities In Liverpool’s Defence

Liverpool’s back four has been an issue that most Liverpool fans are aware of, and was the biggest reason as to why we were not able to lift the Premier League trophy 3 years ago. Our defence has leaked 191 goals in the league for the past four seasons, averaging about 47.7 per season.   That...

Fenway Sports Group Have Delivered

Fenway Sports Group completed the takeover of Liverpool Football Club on the 15th of October 2010, after the disastrous ownership and mismanagement from Hicks and Gillett.  As my colleague has excellently wrote about Liverpool and its financial stature throughout the FSG era here, our annual net spend had declined from £40M in 2008 to -£8.6M...

What Ruben Neves would bring to Liverpool

The link to Ruben Neves is a strange one. It's not out of the ordinary to see a player of his profile being linked with a move to Liverpool in the media. He's young, talented and has a huge resale value if he lives up to his potential. He ticks the boxes. It's that...

Philippe Coutinho: Give Him What He Deserves

Philippe Coutinho is a player you would go to games just to watch him play, even if you were a neutral or supported another club. On his best day, there’s arguably only a few players in the world that can provide jaw-dropping moments like he can. In our title-challenging season, Coutinho was arguably the biggest...

Why Markovic Could be Klopp’s Wildcard

When Lazar Markovic signed for Liverpool in the Summer of 2014 it was seen as a coup. This was one of Europe's most exciting footballers who was coming off the back of a really impressive season with Portuguese giants Benfica.  He joined the Reds despite reported interest from Chelsea and Juventus. The Primeira Liga...
