Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Is Europa League glory a realistic target for Liverpool?

After the weekend thrashing of Aston Villa, in which Daniel Sturridge made his first league start since October, Liverpool now face a Europa League double header with German outfit FC Augsburg. With a League Cup Final to look forward to at the end of the month against Manchester City, it remains to be seen...

Reasons to be Cheerful for a Liverpool supporter

The life of a football supporter eh? If I knew then what I know now I’d have to ask myself, are you sure you want to get involved? It’s not exactly the most serene way to live a life. Moods changing in tune with a ball hitting the back of a net, spitting pure hatred...

The Jordan Henderson conundrum

Captain? Yes. Leader? Not quite. At least since his return to the side last month after his heel problem, Jordan Henderson has not been the robust central midfielder that he has shown he can be. Steven Gerrard's departure last summer left a gaping hole in the very fabric of the squad. Minus Gerrard, Liverpool went...

Making the Case for Cameron Brannagan

Jürgen Klopp’s debut season has brought a lot of positives so far, one of those being the use of Liverpool’s young players. He started this process by bringing back many of Liverpool’s promising loaned out players, now he has been using a team in the FA Cup composed of mostly inexperienced players with of...

Is Lucas Leiva’d?

Liverpool's number twenty one Lucas Leiva, what can I say about him in this piece, that has not already been said about him already by numerous other writers over the past nine years? Everyone has an opinion on Lucas, some good, most bad and some indifferent. He has often bore the brunt from fans...

Observations from Liverpool’s thrashing of Aston Villa

A sunny afternoon in Birmingham saw the sun shine back on Liverpool, as Aston Villa slid further towards the Championship. In a game where Liverpool didn't need to be at even half their best, Villa barely put up even a semblance of a fight. Here are my thoughts from the game. We should not get...

Aston Villa 0 Liverpool 6: Player Ratings

Liverpool and goals do not go together this season. Liverpool and goals do not seemingly like each other. Liverpool and mobility up top absolutely hate each other. But everything changes when even Kolo scores. This is how the Reds fared today: Simon Mignolet (6.5) - Relatively nothing much to do this game. The hardcore pessimists would say...

Klopp’s Keeper Conundrum

Football fans are the masters of kicking players when they're down. You would think that when someone is in dire need of our support and love, we would shower them with comfort and reassurance, messages of positive praise or maybe some motivational quotes to boost their already dwindled confidence. But what do we do...

Stewart and Smith – The Alternative SAS Liverpool Need

I don’t think it would be unfair to say that it’s been a strange old season so far. For want of a better analogy, it has been a genuine rollercoaster ride, with high points quickly hitting the lows before zipping up back to the peaks again. It’s one of those years where anything can...

Patience Can Be a Virtue With FSG

When times are darkest and everything seems hopeless people tend to gravitate towards something to believe in and as Liverpool fans we are no different.  Yet at the end of the Hicks and Gillette era at Liverpool there was very little to believe in.  The club was at the brink of financial demise and...

I Come To Raise An Eyebrow at FSG, Not To Praise Them

You know when you’re at a party or in a pub and your mates start talking enthusiastically about a mutual friend? About how funny he/she is etc. or how wise maybe, but you can’t help but feel that, when it comes to it, they’re not all that? Well, that was my Wednesday night. Following the...

Is Klopp’s Tactical Message Getting Across? A Closer Look at 2nd Half vs Sunderland

The headlines around the Sunderland game will deservedly be the walkout and the comeback, but I think those events have buried what are some very promising signs that Klopp’s LFC revolution, at least tactically, is truly underway. At first glance I thought our performance vs. Sunderland was decent until it was shit. At second...

Who Could Liverpool Target to Replace Moreno?

"We are all sharks circling, and waiting, for traces of blood in the water." - Alan Clark. As fans we're all guilty of bias when it comes to our opinions on a player. It could be your gut instinct or maybe you see something you don't like early on in their career at the club and...

Luis Alberto – Spanish Startlet

When it was reported in the summer of 2013 that Liverpool were interested in buying a young attacking midfielder from Spain, there was a sense of intrigue among the Liverpool supporters. Liverpool had scouted 20-year old Luis Alberto since he was 16; he was then playing for Sevilla's youth teams. Several top clubs, including FC...

Where Are The Leaders At Liverpool Football Club?

It’s been a frustrating season for Liverpool fans so far, the right man is in charge but he’s working with another man’s tools and the results have been inconsistent. With the Reds sitting ninth in the league and the lack of transfers in the January window fans are already pinpointing deficiencies within the current...

The Underestimated Impact of Origi’s Return

As the January Transfer Window closed, many Liverpool fans were left crying out for the signing of a forward. Many believed that the injury crisis plus the increasing number of matches would prove to be too much and that the team would suffer significantly. However, with the return of Sturridge, Coutinho, and Origi people...

Jürgen Klopp’s Foundations Will Require Supporters’ Patience

As football supporters, it's only natural to crave success. We want the club we adore to achieve great things, to challenge for honours and ultimately be a consistent force both domestically and within Europe. Deep down we all want this, but strangely I don't necessarily want it just yet. Now that may sound like...

Managing Daniel Sturridge – Cup or Premier League?

Daniel Sturridge's return to the Liverpool bench against Sunderland caught everybody off guard. In the pre-match press conference a day earlier Jurgen Klopp implied if everything went well then the earliest time fans would get a glimpse of their hit-man would be against West Ham in the FA Cup. The disappointing 2-2 draw, in which...

Liverpool – Hold Your Head Up High

It’s not a great time to be a Liverpool supporter right now. The league campaign – what, for many, gives the season it’s real wings – is in danger of spiralling into a damage limitation exercise. It can be grim watching the Reds; a chronic lack of pace, a blunt object seemingly incapable of...

Observations from Liverpool’s loss at West Ham

Liverpool play well and lose to a set piece goal. Lucas is too eager in a challenge and gives away the free-kick that Liverpool are punished for. Christian Benteke misses chance after chance. Sounds eerily familiar doesn't it? Liverpool fans once again had their very own groundhog day as West Ham knocked The Reds...

Henderson can earn hero status by standing up for fans

Given the timing of Liverpool’s capitulation against West Ham and the walkout of thousands of fans, it was inevitable that links were going to be drawn. After being 2-0 to the good and in complete control, to a walkout of thousands of fans and the subsequent omnishambles that we have come to expect of Liverpool’s defence...

Now is not the Time for Danny Ward

The latest Simon Mignolet horror show that gifted Sunderland a way back into a match they had been comfortably second best in, was for most Liverpool fans the final straw in the Belgian’s chequered Reds career. Well, to be fair it was more like the final straw in a long line of final straws previous....

Danny Ward’s time to shine?

After yet another mistake, this time against Sunderland, Simon Mignolet's time as undisputed Liverpool number 1 must be nearing an end. The ex-Sunderland 'keeper has had a torrid time this season and his 'mistakes' have cost Liverpool an apparent 15 points according to Squakwa.com. It's not as simple as this but add those 15...

Klopp’s Absence a Blessing in Disguise

Hopeless: "Impossible to accomplish, solve, resolve, etc." Saturday's game against Sunderland raised a number of issues. But no new ones. What many of us thought was an under-rated and under-valued squad - abused and suppressed by Rodgers' ignorance and personal insecurities - has turned-out to be farce. Of course, many of our problems were exacerbated by Rodgers' approach....

The Travesty of Modern Day Ticket Prices

"The word fanatic has been used many times... I think it’s more than fanaticism. It’s a religion to them. The thousands who come here, come to worship... it’s a sort of shrine, it isn’t a football ground." - Bill Shankly Bill Shankly embodied the zeitgeist; during his reign spanning from 1959-74, he developed and nurtured...

John Barnes on Jurgen Klopp, the Academy and Pressing

Anfield Index recently celebrated the 100th episode of their main podcast, which also happened to coincide with the website's fifth birthday. A double celebration meant the pressure was on Gags to deliver a guest for the event, and like always he didn't disappoint. John Barnes appeared on episode 100 and episode 101, both are...

Nathaniel Clyne: The New Glen Johnson?

Last summer, as a Liverpool fan there was not that much to rejoice about. Liverpool had finished the 2014/2015 season in a disappointing sixth position having come so close to winning the Premier League title the year before. Daniel Sturridge was hardly seen by fans, the goals from the 2013/2014 season had dried up,...

Ticket to Nowhere: FSG, the Walkout, and Us

In one of the most surreal moments as a Liverpool fan in recent memory, an estimated 10,000 supporters walked out the ground, the sacred ground at Anfield Road, Liverpool and took a stand against what is seen as unjust business practices by Liverpool's managing body, Fenway Sports Group. Though I understand and support the...

Liverpool’s Silver Linings – Cups and Kids

Following another of those performances away at Leicester, you know, the one where we boss possession but create very few clear cut chances on goal, there has been a lot written about the current state of play. The current squad has been scrutinised and pulled apart and for the first time since he arrived, I...
