Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Liverpool’s Rearguard – Who Should Play Over The Busy Period?

Fourteen league matches into the season, fifteen goals conceded, the largely criticised defence has improved over the last few weeks, but we still see individual errors. But come January, Jon Flanagan and Mamadou Sakho should be fit enough to return to the playing field.  This article looks at the best defensive lineup Liverpool can...

Liverpool win Again! Observations from the win against Swansea

Jurgen Klopp has taken his record as Liverpool manager from three wins in seven games to six in ten, after his Reds side defeated Swansea 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday evening to round off a good week. The match itself showed two components associated with a Jurgen Klopp side; the relentless pressure that pins the...

In From The Fringes – Joe Allen

"You'd think he was a Spanish player, a real European player. I would have paid many more millions for this kid,"- Brendan Rodgers on signing Joe Allen Once described as the Welsh Xavi, Joe Allen is one of a few players to see their chances diminished since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp. Although Allen has failed...

The Swans have a number of links with Liverpool FC such as John Toshack, Tommy Smith, Colin Irwin, Brendan Rodgers, Colin Pascoe, Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Allen amongst others, and promises to be a good game. According to reports, Jordan Henderson and Jordan...

Give ‘Shanks’ to the Board: Klopp, the Fans, and Our Red Revolution

In America, there are essentially three types of holidays: 1) Those where we eat until we hate ourselves, 2) Those where we give overpriced gifts to each other, to later return them, and 3) Those where we don’t know what else to do, so we blow things up. At present, we are closest to a...

How to Get the Best Out of Roberto Firmino

Perhaps the most tantalising, definitely the most exciting, and overall the most mouth-watering prospect to come out of this season has been Roberto Firmino and his integration first into Liverpool, and subsequently into Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool. The pace, the guile, and the grace with which the Brazilian ace glides across the pitch with the...

Klopp Carving Out Results With Rodgers Tools

Does He Really Need New Pliers? When interviewed following his third from last game in charge of Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers identified a lack of quality ‘tools’ as the reason for his poor managerial record in 2015. “Give me the tools, I’ll do the work” were his exact words in the aftermath of September’s 3-2 victory...

Don’t Look Back in Anger

Almost exactly two years ago Liverpool fans witnessed a genuine watershed moment, a highlight in a season of giddy and vertigo inducing highs.  Now, just to be clear, we’re not going to dwell on history here; enough people tell us that we take nostalgia to unhealthy levels.  But just bear with me for a...

Job Done! Observations from Liverpool’s win vs Bordeaux

It wasn't straightforward. That wouldn't be the Liverpool way and why would we have it any other way? It was a far cry from the demolition of Manchester City on Saturday, but Liverpool picked up all three points against Bordeaux on Thursday evening. It was a victory which guaranteed the Reds qualification from the Europa...

The Brilliance Of Emre Can

Emre Can, what can I say about him? He's one of the brightest stars currently in the Liverpool team. His ability to play a number of positions, whether it be wasted in defence, ala the Brendan Rodgers era or in his more natural midfield position makes him an invaluable member of the LiverpooI set up....

Home vs away form? A real concern or an imaginary problem

On Saturday, Jürgen Klopp’s blitzkrieg offence claimed its latest high-profile away victim in Manchester City. After battering an already-broken Chelsea 3-1 a few weeks back, Liverpool could approach the far more difficult proposition of an Etihad away day with renewed hope, a hope that was certainly not misplaced. By the end of the game, City’s...

Man City Smashed – The Season Starts Now…

Well that was bloody marvellous wasn’t it? Going to the Etihad this time around, given Chelsea’s continual struggles, was, on paper at least, the toughest assignment the Reds would have in the league this season. The fact that just after the half hour Jürgen’s boys found themselves 3-0 up, coasting, and seemingly able to...

Klopp Giving Liverpool Reason to be Quietly Confident

Glorious, swift, stunning, prepotent, magnificent. I could go on. The performance against Manchester City on Saturday evening was one thoroughly enjoyed by the entire fanbase; the current title favourites were dispatched in their own stadium by a rampant Liverpool side that could have easily ended up with seven goals. Having seen off all of...

Man City Win Has Brought Back the Feelgood Factor

It was a day that started with talk of Sergio Aguero’s return and of Raheem Sterling’s first encounter with Liverpool since his much protracted summer move. It ended with Kolo Toure enjoying a three-minute cameo as a central-midfielder / right-winger hybrid with the Reds 4-1 up. What a time to be alive indeed. Mate, Kolo is...

Jürgen Klopp’s Midfield Unit

Hello again Anfield Index, it's been a while. Sorry I've taken some time since my last article, but apparently being in the final year of your degree is quite time-consuming. Moving on, in this piece I will be attempting to analyse what I consider the most important component of any Klopp system: the midfield. Most...

Klopp Working Miracles with Lucas and Lallana

Liverpool is on the up, the players are playing out of their skins, the fanbase is united, Brendan Rodgers has gone and Jürgen Klopp is now in charge. Genuine footballing superstars like Ilkay Gundogan, Leroy Sane and Tino Horn are being linked with the club and there is a real possibility that some of...

Football Fans: Adopting the Persona

I’m a great believer in the theory that some football fans subconsciously adopt the persona of the manager that leads their club of choice. How the mentality and outlook of the man that picks the team, the man that holds the fans very mood for the rest of the week in his hands, will...

Sturridge, Firmino and Coutinho – Opponents Should Fear Us

"Where are the goals going to come from?" was probably amongst the top five questions Liverpool fans have asked in 2015. It's not like there wasn't cause for concern either, saying the Reds looked blunt up front would've been polite. The toothless attack is a mixture of Daniel Sturridge having shares in the injury...

Bringing The Belief Back

"After the goal on 82 minutes, with 12 minutes to go, I saw many people leaving the stadium. I felt pretty alone in this moment." Jurgen Klopp's words after Liverpool lost to Crystal Palace just before the international break. We are now just over six weeks into his reign as Liverpool manager and how we have...

Liverpool’s Midfield – The Heart of the Team, in Need of a Defibrillator!

Editor's note: This article was written prior to Liverpool's win against Manchester City at Etihad on Saturday I've always believed that the competitive games are won and lost, by the battle in midfield. It's the area of a team so influential to the style, tempo, control and competitiveness of a team. A good midfield will...

Chaos-Kitchen: Shooting-up the Table

Delicate. Intricate. Profligate. Manchester City's candy-cane tower has come crumbling down. Forget City's Soufflé-style of calculated luxury: we've entered Jürgen's Black Forest Gateau of Mayhem. High-class  pomp has been decimated by working-class passion as the Moneyball-marauding FSG out-bought City's billions in all areas. On sponsors alone, Liverpool's Subway, Gatorade and Dunkin' Donuts deals dwarf against the likes of City's Nike, Aabar and Etihad...

Man City 1 Liverpool 4 – Observations from the huge win!

Resounding. Frightful. Adjectives you don't usually see used for an away side at the Etihad in a positive manner. Liverpool bucked the trend. I have seen many compare the mauling of Manchester City to the dismantling of Chelsea a few weeks back. On the surface of course there are similarities. Liverpool turn up in somebody...

Manchester City 1 Liverpool 4: Player Ratings

Liverpool turned in a Klopp-terclass performance away from the home, at the home of a real top team. The team put in a performance which conveyed the view that they are beginning to absorb the vision of the new manager. Good times ahead ahoy!  Simon Mignolet (6.5) - Simon had a really straight forward game,...

We Are Liverpool, Tra’ La’ La’ La’ La’

Don’t deny it, you felt it too. Amidst all the delirium, the chaotic and synergetic euphoria of having Jürgen Klopp traipse around the halls of Melwood in his Liverbird encrusted tracksuit, the bitter disappointment of his first home loss to Crystal Palace brought a lot of the Reds' faithful down to earth, for a brief...

Manchester City Vs Liverpool Preview | Tactics, Team News & Stats

Liverpool suffered defeat against Crystal Palace, at Anfield, followed by a two week international break, so what is the ideal match to follow that? Erm, not Manchester City away. And yet, it might be ideal -  as expectations will be low, some of the Reds' key players have had time to rest and train,...

How To Get The Best Out Of: Dejan Lovren

Anger, bitterness, sadness. Just three emotions that greeted the majority of fans when it was announced that our beloved Mamadou Sakho would be out for around eight weeks, ruling the Frenchman out until the new year. However, these were only mild emotions, when compared to those when the fanbase realised who will most likely...

Klopp vs Rodgers – What’s Changed So Far?

It feels odd for me to write this but Jurgen Klopp's appointment as Liverpool manager wasn't welcomed by everybody. Some fans still felt Brendan Rodgers had it in him to turn it around. The media and pundits, well they didn't welcome a foreign coach replacing a 'bright, young, British talent" at a historically big...

Playing Favourites – Who’s Your Liverpool Hero?

“He's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now.” James Gordon, The Dark Knight Rises “I'm normally not a praying man, but if you're up there, please save me Superman.” Homer Simpson Favouritism, in this politically correct world obsessed with always presenting a veneer of egalitarianism, can be a bit of a dirty word....
