Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Scouser Tommies: SNAKES ON A PLANE

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back with another episode of Scouser Tommies, the first one since Virgil Van Dijk lifted the 20th League Title for the Reds in front of a packed Anfield.. It’s been a while, but Jay has been busy, to be fair. And whilst he had extra special reasons to celebrate, the whole city has been in a party mood for quite some time now. (Not quite the whole city, of course; some isolated areas haven’t had a sniff of a title party for 30 years now!) On this week’s show, Jim and Jay look back on that momentous day when Virgil lifted that trophy, the iconic image of the skipper holding that shiny chunk of silver aloft that will live long in the memory. They also touch on the contrasting feelings that came out of that victory parade, a day that had been filled with pride as countless Reds made the pilgrimage to see their kings, celebrating in typical good humor, before the horrific scenes that, as awful as they were, thankfully—miraculously—weren’t as bad as we all feared they would be. The response, too, from those in the city, the offers of help, said so much about the true Liverpool. With a certain former Liverpool player swapping his No. 66 for the shirt usually worn by the sub before squad numbers came in, Jay and Jim look at how the feelings have started to change from those who were critical of the reception the player got from the fans he claims he loves. More and more see just why that reception was deserved. He’s not the first, he won’t be the last, but as Jim and Jay discuss, he’s done it in the worst possible way and ensured he won’t be remembered in the same way as some of those true legends whose names grace the official LFC museum—long after their boots were hung up for the last time. From tears in front of the Sky cameras to showing off the kind of fluent Spanish you don’t pick up overnight, it’s been quite the planned departure. More important than any of that is the fact that Liverpool have some new faces on the way in, the club showing true intent this summer to ensure Arne Slot has what he needs to turn one league title into a period of sustained success. Jay and Jim look at the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, a direct and exciting replacement for that player who’s just left. Most exciting of all is the impending record transfer of Florian Wirtz, Frimpong’s Leverkusen teammate, and Jay explains just how popular that player is amongst his own countrymen. Those signings, along with the likely arrival of Milos Kerkez, are a massive statement of intent from the champions. Isn’t it nice saying, “The Champions”, by the way? The hosts talk about how last season was basically a "test run" for Arne and wonder just how he’s going to fare when he gets his hands on the players he’s had a hand in signing himself. Last season was just the beginning; will we see a new style of play in the next campaign? Will these new signings allow him to truly stamp his authority on the team's style? To wrap things up, there’s a moment for Jay and Jim to point out some social media posts that caught their eyes, with an old face who’s still not welcome in isolated parts of the city, and a post from Liverpool Airport that really put a certain ex-player in his place. Tactical Analysis – Is Benteke Getting Enough Support?

Liverpool weren't reliant on a wonder goal this week but yet again it was an underwhelming performance in which the Reds were the victors coming out with a 1-0 win against newly promoted Bournemouth. It wasn't one for the neutrals to appreciate but Liverpool got the job done and now have six points from six....

Four New Things At Liverpool’s Anfield Opener

New Stand Anfield’s new main stand looms behind the current one, as fans exchange stories about how it will be moved into place, where it came from and what it will be called. Like the mythical beast in that episode of Father Ted, much of the evening’s talk concerned the new structure, and the fact that the...

How Liverpool Shaped Up In Possession Against Bournemouth

Against Stoke, we concentrated on how Liverpool played in possession. Here again, for different reasons, we will do the same, focusing less on the execution of Liverpool's attacking game plan and more on the implementation of their shape when on the offensive. Line up Rodgers opted for the same team that had started against Stoke. At this...

Would Winning Alone Suffice?

If one reads the title of this piece, it would not be too far fetched to assume that readers might think they have entered an Arsenal/Chelsea fans blog site by accident, as this is a topic which has been a bug bear for Arsenal fans during their trophy drought ridden years. The terms 'winning...

Formations That Liverpool Could Use This Season

In the opening game of the season away to Stoke City Brendan Rodgers decided to play a 4-2-3-1 formation. The blunt and boring performance that followed may have been caused by early season rustiness and Stoke away being a challenging fixture. However it will cause debate as to what is the best formation for Liverpool...

Why Alberto Moreno Still Has a Future at Liverpool FC

Liverpool started their Premier League campaign with a solid but unspectacular display at Stoke. Three points in the bag, on we go. Bournemouth are up next. Despite a very lukewarm performance in general, Rodgers will be happy with the clean sheet that the defence just about managed to keep. One person who shone in particular...

Balancing the Liverpool Attack – A Left Footed Wide Man

Balance is often misused in footballing terms. I've heard commentators use balance as if it needs to be a mirror image. If a team has an attacking right winger they should have an attacking left winger too for 'balance'. That's not always the case. Sometimes balance is about the team accommodating the attacking right...

If Sakho is Sold… How is He Replaced?

You don't know what you've got till it's gone. Mamadou Sakho is a rare breed of centre-back these days. Gone is the time many of the big teams had a world class centre back, or at least the potential to be one. He splits opinion for many different reasons and I won't bore you with...

Mario’s Red Nightmare

When Mario Balotelli signed for Liverpool last year, to say opinion was divided would be an understatement. Some thought it was disaster waiting to happen whilst others believed it would be Mario's time to shine. Loved by an adoring, famously loyal fan base, he would finally show the world his talent on a football...

Liverpool New Boys Look To Prove Their Worth

Liverpool might well have been on the better side of Raheem Sterling’s £49 million move to Manchester City but the England forward’s previous club, Queen’s Park Rangers, were the recipients of a sizeable chunk of that fee and Brendan Rodgers has already reinvested the remainder, and more. Nathaniel Clyne, Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke, for...

New Season, New Players – Same Old Problems?

So another season has arrived. TV reports, newspaper interviews, online exclusives and positivity from all, looking forward to the new season. How we’ve missed it all and are so happy to having the Premier League back in our lives. A few surprise results from the big teams on Saturday and on Sunday lunchtime before...

Supersubs – Who Can Change the Game From the Bench?

The 1-0 win over Stoke City on the opening day of the season was a nervous, tense affair. With 85 minutes on the clock, it looked as though Liverpool were going to come away with just a point. Not a bad result by any means, but in the end the Reds snatched all three...

One Brazilian In, Another One Out?

The season's begun and with it comes more changes. A host of players in and a host of players out. And there's Brazilian fever all around Liverpool. Liverpool's new signing, Roberto Firmino, has attracted excitement and hope whilst team-mate, Philippe Coutinho, continues to light up the Premier League. An opening goal for the 'little magician' and...

A Tactical Analysis of Christian Benteke vs Stoke

Christian Benteke was the topic of much debate this summer amongst Liverpool fans, myself included. I wasn't sure if his style would suit how I pictured Liverpool playing, I had my concerns about his goalscoring record when you scratched beneath the surface of it and what worried me most was his lack of movement in...

Liverpool FC 15/16 | 5 Strategic Keys to Champions League Football

PART 1 OF 2 Preface As Liverpool fans close a chapter on last season, many are left to ponder if the club will come to rue a missed and golden opportunity, which in the grander context of British and European football, may well be the start of a new challenge in the English Premier League for...

Lucas going to Leiva? Unluckyyy

Rumours broke after the victory against Stoke that Lucas and Brendan Rodgers had had a falling out.  The reason behind this supposed falling out isn't really known but Twitter is rife with speculation as to why, with the main culprit being lack of playing time. The Liverpool Echo followed this up a day later...

Alberto Moreno: The Latest Left-Back Departure?

With rumours surrounding the future of Alberto Moreno, it's hard not to worry about the lack of left-backs that have managed to cement themselves at Liverpool in recent years. When the popular Spaniard came to Anfield last summer, he impressed from the start with strong performances and that goal against Tottenham. However, since that spark...

Is a New Brendan Rodgers Upon Us?

We’ve seen the two extreme ends of the “Brendan Rodgers Spectrum” over the course of his tenure in the Red part of Merseyside. It's not quite a ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ story, but the change in personality is far from fiction. The Personable Upon his arrival, Brendan seems to be a people's person. He...

Stoke 0-1 Liverpool: In-Depth Tactical Analysis

The first game of the season is always difficult to analyse. Some players are not quite match sharp yet. New signings often aren't fully gelled in yet. New tactical concepts and adjustments haven't yet been fully processed and the overall cohesion and game play is often a little off. As such, the first game...

David Fairclough – Kop Hero | Heroes of our Past

There have been many great emotional European nights at Anfield. Even with the rise of the modern game Anfield stands apart from other grounds with it’s unrivalled passion. It’s not only an opinion shared by Liverpool supporters, it still remains a mythical citadel of football to most supporters, players and managers, regardless of their...

Post Match Stoke 0 Liverpool 1 – What did we learn?

A Philippe Coutinho stunner gives Liverpool the win. No, this is not February 2015, but it felt like deja-vu in the win against Stoke in Reds season opener. Many fans had hoped to see a fluid Liverpool side, hungry for revenge against the side that embarrassed them on the last day of the season but...

Stoke City 0 Liverpool 1 | Player Ratings

Liverpool took on Stoke City in their opening game of the 2015/16 season, 77 days after the 6-1 drubbing in the same fixture in the previous season. A game of very few chances and notable moments, until a piece of magic from Coutinho, something the Liverpool fans will soon start to take for granted. Liverpool...

If There’s Hope, It Lies in The Goals

From 101 to 52. The drop in the amount of goals scored by Liverpool from the 2013/14 season to the 2014/15 season was stark, and was a result of their meek, submissive, and wholly unconvincing performances during the last campaign. One of the consistent themes throughout the aforementioned seasons was poor defending, both individually and...

Is there any logic behind starting Dejan Lovren?

The Premier League season is upon us. Many claim it to be better than Christmas Day. The build up to kick off, the anticipation of seeing your team actually start, picking up a win and getting the season off to a good start. The game is being televised which means that if you're going to...

The Lallana Dilemma

Just about a year ago, Liverpool FC agreed yet another deal with Southampton for their captain Adam Lallana. Most Liverpool fans agreed that he was a good signing. Definitely not the world-class, big name category of player we had been craving since the departure of Luis Suarez, but it seemed he would be a player...

The Formula to Win the League

The Premiership is just around the corner.  In a recent article, I came up with specific plan of action on how to win the league by focusing almost exclusively on the 'Bottom 14' teams.  This article looks to explore a list of specific parameters that can help Liverpool win the league based on the...

Alberto and Markovic, do Liverpool waste talent?

Why have a Ferrari, a Porsche and a Lamborghini if you're just going to lock them away, rarely use them yet continuously talk about having them. "Yeah, look at the videos of how quick they can go. Imagine how good it'll be when I finally use them, right?!" Is this scenario not what happens when Liverpool...

An Evening With Rodgers

I met them both at the Stadium Bukit Jalil press box when the 2nd half started. Duty calls, you see. I was adamant that I spend the 1st half before with my family, eager to impress upon my two elder girls and their cousin sister what it meant to immerse themselves in the game...
