Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Roberto Firmino: Underrated Brazilian The Heartbeat Of Klopp’s System

Philippe Coutinho was probably regarded as the most talented of the ‘Fab Four’ prior to his departure, with Sadio Mane the speedster of the pack and Mo Salah the marksman who’s hit the ground running to provide a new lease of life to Klopp’s attacking force. Yet, there can be no argument that Roberto...

Why Liverpool Will Always Be Bigger Than Any One Player

It took all of eight minutes to remind Anfield of one very special fact. Liverpool Football Club is bigger than any player. Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain’s driving run, emphatic finish and impassioned celebration perfectly emblemised the oft-romanticised ‘Liverpool spirit’ – the idea that you don’t buy a great player, rather a player becomes great in the cauldron that...

The Reality of Sadio Mane’s Season

Sadio Mane is more than just the second line of a viral song about Liverpool F.C’s frontline. In 2016/2017 he was Liverpool’s best player, his form reflected in his 2nd place finish - behind his Liverpool compatriot Mohamed Salah - in 2017’s CAF African Player Of The Year awards. The Senegalese forward was so integral...

Liverpool 4-3 Man City: A Tactical Breakdown

From start to finish, Liverpool's Premier League tie with Manchester City was electric. Essentially, two very similar schools of tactical thinking came together, and on this occasion, Klopp's relentless pressing from the front, numerical overloads, and astute counter-pressing positioning came out on top. Instead of breaking down the goals in this analysis, because a majority...

Why Liverpool don’t need to replace Phil Coutinho… Yet

Sunday morning, a few hours before Liverpool kicked off against Manchester City, I was just about done. It hadn’t been the best day for Liverpool up until that point, as the toxic fever pitch and maelstrom of Liverpool fans’ complaints about everything from Jon Flanagan’s guilty plea right the way through to Liverpool deciding...

Reborn Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Continues To Excel

If ever a day summed up why Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's decision to trade Arsenal for Liverpool last August was an inspired one, it was Sunday. As the 24-year-old was sat preparing for the Reds’ eagerly-anticipated clash with Man City, his former club were blowing a lead and suffering defeat at Bournemouth, languishing in sixth-place in the...

What We’ve Learnt About Klopp’s LFC | Part 3: The Reds Making Great Strides Forward

Much has been made in recent months about Jurgen Klopp's stubbornness. From slow in-game changes to persevering with persistent underachievers. However, Klopp has come out fighting since the Spurs game and stuck the proverbial fingers up to the critics, with his team showing some really good form. This form culminated in what was a...

Liverpool Press On Despite Distractions

Distractions are something no manager ever wants to deal with. The narrative for so many seasons gone awry at Liverpool or anywhere in sport usually surrounds a player dispute or an underlying negative that eventually pulled the whole team down. Back in 2015, around this time of year, reality started to set in that the...

Key Stats from Liverpool 4-3 Man City

Liverpool saw off Manchester City in an absolutely staggering 4-3 win that might well rank as one of their best performances under Jürgen Klopp. But what were the key stats from this incredible game of football? Finishing Levels: Insane This was a game of absolutely brilliant goals. All four of Liverpool’s goals were outrageously good finishes,...

Observations as Liverpool and City produce a Classic!

Liverpool and Manchester City went hammer and tongs throughout the 90 minutes as Liverpool edged the 7 goal thriller in a game which was once again one of the best advertisements for the Premier League as a whole. Liverpool thus break City's lossless streak this season. My key observations are below: Liverpool end the week...

Player Ratings As The Reds Rock – Liverpool 4-3 Manchester City

Trying to compile my thoughts rationally and not give everyone a 10/10 will be difficult, but I'll do my best. Seriously though, wow! Manchester City are one hell of a football team, but Liverpool aren't too bad either. Of course, The Reds do their thing and make it hard for themselves after being 4-1 up,...

Scouting Christian Pulisic: Dortmund’s Teenage Sensation

At 1-1, Dortmund’s recent failures stared them in the face. Julian Nagelsmann – the manager they’ve been pursuing as a means of ailing all their woes suffered under previous incumbents – was about to grind out a great result at the Signal Iduna Park. Hoffenheim had taken a first-half lead but the lack of...

Liverpool v Manchester City Preview – Key Battles

After what seems like forever, Liverpool have had a whole week between two games, and the break couldn't have come at a better time than in the lead-up to a game against Manchester City, who have made a mockery of the Premier League this season. City have only dropped points twice this season but come...

Why the 3-4-2-1 makes the most sense for Klopp’s Post-Coutinho Liverpool

Like Alonso, Torres, Mascherano, Sterling and Suarez before him, Philippe Coutinho has been lured away by one of the bigger fish in world football. As a result, Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are left with the task maintaining what is widely considered to be an upward trajectory without their most influential player. It is fortunate, at...

Van Dijk & Keita | Posing A New Threat From Deep

I started writing a tactical piece a few months ago which was set to be titled ‘How to Stop Liverpool’. This was around the time that Liverpool suffered two bad results at Anfield in the space of a week by drawing with both West Brom and Everton despite dominating the ball in both matches....

Defending Set Pieces – A Statistical Analysis

It's silly season again. Time to double click on that football manager icon and see who the next football wunderkind is. Time to test your f5 button's durability. And most importantly time to complain about FSG and their transfer policy. I was thinking about writing on the hot topic but I as I have...

Radio Silence Of Window A Sign Of Things To Come At Liverpool FC?

Radio silence makes everyone nervous, particularly when it comes to transfers. Having allowed Coutinho to make his highly anticipated big-money move to Barcelona midway through the season with the top-four, FA Cup and Champions League still all to play for represents a huge risk from Jurgen Klopp and the owners. Naturally, that's sent fans into...

The Presence Of Virgil van Dijk Will Lift Those Around Him

Something that stands out immediately when you look at Virgil van Dijk is the authority he possesses. There is a real aura about him. It is something that has always been evident with the Rolls Royce centre-back, whether it be as a youngster at FC Groningen, someone way ahead of the rest at Celtic or...

Mystery Liverpool FC Target Narrowed By Northcroft

After the untimely departure of Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool supporters are understandably anxious to pin their hopes to a replacement. The names that are repeatedly thrown out there are Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez and Monaco’s Thomas Lemar. However, reports have varied from tales of deals nearly done to outright dismissals of the links altogether. Two recent journalist...

Why Klopp was right to sell Coutinho

If you are like me you're still probably feeling more than slightly irritated at the sale of Phil Coutinho. Yes, the club got good money for him and it allows Klopp to build up the wider squad. But the circumstances and manner of his departure certainly leaves a sour taste behind. Frankly, the way Phil...

The Ramifications Of Philippe Coutinho’s Transfer To Barcelona

On Saturday, the news Liverpool fans had long been dreading and Barcelona fans had been dreaming of was finally announced. Philippe Coutinho was officially made a Barcelona player, becoming the third most expensive player in the world - behind fellow countryman Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at €142million. The only solace that Reds fans can take from...

Why one player alone can’t replace Philippe Coutinho at Liverpool

Philippe Coutinho is leaving Liverpool. This won't come as a surprise to many as it was pretty clear since the player went on strike in the summer that it was only going to be a matter of time. Many supporters including myself are however extremely concerned about losing Coutinho this month. The Reds are...

Liverpool FC: A Guide to Being a Supporter

I start this piece knowing full well I am standing against the strongest of currents. Here I am, in my privileged position, as a writer and as someone who is fortunate enough to go to Liverpool and watch my team play, dictating how to support my/your/our team, Liverpool Football Club. It's a strange position to...

Virgil And The Perfect Debut

Nothing scares me more than the debut of a big money player. It takes me back to the passage in Carra’s autobiography where he discusses the signing of El-Hadj Diouf from Lens. ‘The Serial Killer’ (and we can assume that he gave himself that nickname) cost Gerard Houllier £10m – the equivalent of about three...

Riyad Mahrez: The Man To Reignite The ‘Fab Four’?

It’s widely known that Riyad Mahrez wants to leave Leicester City, with the Algerian keen to test himself at a top Premier League club and make the next step in his career. There’s a wide berth of interest too, with all of the top-six linked to the winger at one time or the other. With...

So, farewell then, Philippe Coutinho.

So, farewell then, Philippe Coutinho. ‘I know I signed a contract, but I want to leave now.’ That was your catchphrase. Well, it’s easy to sound bitter and mealy-mouthed. So let’s do that. The announcement of Coutinho’s departure is news and, at the same time, no news at all. The club loves a drama and this one has...

Why Liverpool will flourish without Phil Coutinho

I want to open this piece by pointing out that Phillipe Coutinho was my favourite player at Liverpool. For the last two or three seasons now, Phil has been Liverpool’s best player and has developed into a real, real talent. The fact that I wrote an article about him two weeks ago saying he’s...
