SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Analysing Philippe Coutinho’s Masterclass vs Arsenal

After an all-action display of midfield dominance versus Everton, it’s fair to say that Philippe Coutinho underperformed in the following game against West Brom, so much so that many wanted him dropped for the game against Arsenal at home. Whilst he was largely anonymous at The Hawthorns he wasn't the only one, and the...

The Wool of Lime Street

Please note that this is a satirical short story, please read it with that in mind. “Seventy seven quid.” Gareth stared blankly at his train ticket lying in front of him, taunting him as he scanned the price over and over until it blurred into one blotch of ink. Lime Street return to Euston Station. Gareth knew...

The Curious Case of Luis Alberto

The Rules of Luis Alberto: "1st RULE: You do not play Luis Alberto. 2nd RULE: You DO NOT play Luis Alberto."   Okay, so maybe that is a bit harsh on Liverpool’s number 6, but in light of recent injuries, fans have been calling out for Brendan Rodgers to hand Luis Alberto Romero his first Premier League start...

Philippe Coutinho’s Touch of Class Dominated the Derby

There’s nothing like an intense derby match to separate the wheat from the chaff. An evening kick-off which stirred memories of those famous Anfield occasions under the lights, and a battle for bragging rights on the pitch, on the streets, in the pub, and most importantly, in the league table. The clichés rolled off...

Martin Kelly has returned from injury at the perfect time for Liverpool. Liverpool are currently experiencing a defensive crisis, with Mamadou Sakho, Daniel Agger, Jose Enrique, Glen Johnson and Sebastian Coates all out injured. This leaves Liverpool with just five fit regular first team defenders. Without Kelly, this number would fall to four. His return from...

How were were able to almost mix and match our defenders if required and how, even with...

Reviewing Liverpool’s imbalance & openness in the 1st half vs Villa

"It’s (the Premier League) less tactical, with more space, and more physical than in Spain. You don’t have to wait until the second half here for a game to open up and that is good for me." Michu Traditionally, people think of English football as direct, as physical, as high intensity and sometimes a battle. But...

With a 2013 bolstered by tangible progress, Brendan Rodgers earned the trust of the mainstream Liverpool faithful.
