Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Bogeyman Noun An imaginary evil spirit used to frighten children - A person or thing widely regarded as an object of fear There was once a story that was told all across world. Emre Can – Right Back In The Middle

Emre Can arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2014, and the then 20-year-old German was seen an exciting young prospect with the potential to become one of the top midfielders in Europe. Can’s impressive performances at Bayer Leverkusen had alerted his old club Bayern Munich, where he’d spent four years as a youth player....

Liverpool Must Sign Experience Over Youth This Summer

As the season comes to an end all eyes and ears will be fixated on who Liverpool will sign in the transfer window. The club has not been particularly successful in this area since Brendan Rodgers took over as manager three seasons ago. The Reds can only count Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho as...

Why Andrea Pirlo To Liverpool Makes No Sense Whatsoever

The season approaches it's finale and it couldn’t come any sooner for Liverpool fans as their season has been a disappointment. They’ve witnessed a regression in their beloved Liverpool side from the previous season which raised many hopes. However, it’s that time of year again where Liverpool Football Club will be linked to the world and their wife...

Opportunity Botched By Liverpool

This season has not been "par" for Liverpool Football Club; far from it. The justification for calling 5th place par is just an excuse for failure and an acceptance of mediocrity. I'm not delusional, I didn't expect us to win the title or even challenge for it like last season. But to be told, by...

Points or Position? What Matters Most?

In the aftermath of the Liverpool vs Chelsea game on Sunday I was scrolling through Twitter looking at the overreactions of many with stats being thrown around like nobody's business. All normal stuff before one stat in particular caught me off guard. "Brendan Rodgers averages 76 points per season as Liverpool manager." Shit, I thought, how...

Steven Gerrard’s Top 10 Goals

The end is nigh. For Liverpool fans that is. Steven Gerrard has a mere two games left with his boyhood club and the realisation is hitting many. Local boy who came good. I'm not sure how it compares for the rest of you but for me it's like when my first pet died. You kind...

A Football Team Is Like A Piano… But Liverpool Have No One to Play It

“A football team is like a piano. You need eight men to carry it and three who can play the damn thing.” Bill Shankly In the 2013/14 season Liverpool experienced, in the words of Jim Fishlock ,"a perfect storm”. It was a season in which the Reds and their manager catered brilliantly to a world class player, finding...

Christian Benteke – Gruel of the Premier League

We're a few days into May and silly season is going into overdrive. A new name is linked to the club everyday and a new topic of conversation for people. For some fans this is a welcomed distraction from a season which began with great expectations following on from our title charge but you'd...

“Par”-don me Mr Rodgers

Par, such a simple and non-offensive word. Just 3 little letters, it's hard to get upset by a word like Par isn't it? Well thats what you would have thought this time last week.  However, since a certain Mr Rodgers uttered that non-offensive little word in a press conference, I've seen it written more times than...

Take Over The Ship Captain Hendo

Three games leave us from saying goodbye to arguably the best player Anfield has ever seen, Steven Gerrard, our captain for over 12 years. He’s a Liverpool legend I’ll remember as the attacking midfielder who won us trophies and offered us fans, dozens of memorable moments. Plus, he’s the producer of the best 6 minutes...

In just a few games time, we will say goodbye to one the greatest players ever to have graced the Premier League. Bar a Premier League title, he won all other major honours on his journey with his beloved club, winning the love and respect of football fans all over the world. Not just...

Liverpool U21s 2 Leicester 1 – Cameron Brannagan Strike Takes Liverpool Top

Michael Beale's Liverpool u21 side had the chance to go top of the league today, but in order to do so they had to beat Leicester City in Chester. The last outing for the under-21s saw an impressive performance from 18-year-old attacking midfielder Ryan Kent, who ran the show and scored two goals in the...

Liverpool’s Youth and the Relevant

Morale is at an all-time low for the fans, the determination of our first team players is depleting after every poor result, and our manager seems to have run out of ideas. It seems like Liverpool has reached a dangerous place, we have lost the Champions League spot and we have nothing else to...

Pay for Memphis Depay | An Analytical Look

In recent days and weeks, Liverpool have been linked with the purchase of Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven. There have been news pieces on how Liverpool have been monitoring Depay for almost a year and have reinforced their monitoring in recent weeks, the key being 'Monitoring'. So what could Depay bring to Liverpool and...

Clean Sheets Don’t Hide The Dirt in Defence for Liverpool

"Just because everything is different doesn't mean anything has changed" - Irene Peter. Defensive frailties have been at the forefront of Brendan Rodgers' reign as Liverpool manager so far. The goals of last season papered over last season's cracks and despite the improvement since Christmas 2014, Liverpool are only 4 goals better off defensively than they...

Unfinished Business – Fact! Should Rafa Return to Liverpool?

I have always held FSG in high regard after their purchase of Liverpool Football Club. The manner in which they despatched their American compatriots, Messers Hicks & Gillett, was stunningly meticulous in it’s execution. Callous, cold and quite frankly ballsy to say the least. They came, saw what they wanted, and grabbed it from...

Bring Klopp to the Kop to Replace the Failing Rodgers

Many moons ago (roughly ten), last season ended in glorious failure, of sorts, for Liverpool Football Club and its fans. That failure (to get a point against Chelsea/to keep a lead against Palace) was however, very much tempered by the fact that nobody had truly expected us to ever have been in the position...

Philippe Coutinho: A shining light in a frustrating season

Philippe Coutinho was recently named in the PFA team of the year; but in expected style, not all agreed. It was questioned by some as to whether he deserved to make the line-up, but why shouldn't he? In what has been such a frustrating and disappointing season for Liverpool, the Reds didn't make that stepping...

Adam Lallana – The Emblem of this Season

This season has been one of frustration on the most part, offset by early season excitement and a little bit of hope thrown in for good measure. I feel Adam Lallana epitomises this season completely. Those of you who follow me will know I'm not the biggest Lallana fan. This is more to do with...

Rodgers Has 99 Problems and Big Games Are One!

Nearing the end of a forgetful season it's easy to do one of two things; either remind yourself of the poor start of the season or at every given opportunity brag about the unbeaten streak we had at the start of 2015. In isolation both tell a completely different story but the season should...

Liverpool at a Crossroads

Defeats are always hard to stomach, some more than others. Sometimes though, it’s not just about the defeats or the manner of them; it’s an accumulation of things that change the landscape. For over 50 years, trophies have been the currency that Liverpool Football Club has dealt in and the sad fact is that 10...

Jordan Henderson: The New Generation

Things are changing at Liverpool and it’s the start of a new generation. Steven Gerrard is moving to America after turning down a contract extension, Jamie Carragher now works alongside Gary Neville, once an arch nemesis, and young Jordan Henderson, is set to become the next captain of Liverpool football club. Liverpool fans haven’t had much...

There Goes The Fear – Liverpool Run Scared at Wembley

At around 2 pm on Sunday April 19th 2014, Aston Villa’s players will have looked at the individuals on Liverpool’s team sheet and thought: “You know what? We’re better than these.” Tim Sherwood will have reinforced this belief, and sent his side out onto the Wembley pitch with plenty of confidence, a clear but simple...

Brendan Rodgers – Should He Stay or Should He Go?

Sunday's FA Cup semi-final seemed to be the perfect opportunity for Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool to answer many questions that had arisen over the course of the season. The pressure was mounting on the Liverpool boss and his neck was firmly on the line. The stage was set, fans had amassed from all over the...

The New Javier Mascherano

Since Javier Mascherano left Liverpool for pastures new in Spain there has been a gap in the midfield that hasn't really been addressed. We've had the misfortune of seeing the likes of Christian Poulsen, Charlie Adam, Jay Spearing and Lucas Leiva all play that role  with varying degrees of influence but they still fell...

In the Name of Liverpool’s Progress

It started with Mourinho. It finished with Sherwood. There’s a phrase that many seems to have adopted around Liverpool football club; weeks after the initial signs of a gravestone began to manifest itself around the persona of Brendan Rodgers; the term “for whom the bell tolls” seems to hover above his head like a wandering storm;...

Brendan Rodgers’ Identity Thief

So, does anybody know what happened to Brendan Rodgers? You know the one I mean, right? The one that had the dossier that impressed FSG so much they broke the structure they had in mind to appoint him. The one that had an ethos that the Liverpool fans got behind straight away, the whole death...

Jordan Henderson – £100k per week?

"I've got no strings to hold me down, to make me fret, or make me frown. I had strings, but now I'm free. There are no strings on me" That could well be the theme song for Liverpool's captain in waiting next season, Jordan Henderson. For well over a decade Steven Gerrard has been the cornerstone...

Where did it all go wrong for Liverpool?

In the space of a month, Liverpool’s season seems to have fallen apart. They’re out of the FA Cup and the possibility of a top four finish looks slim, although there is still hope. Liverpool currently sit in fifth place, on 57 points, seven points off Manchester City who are in the running for...
