Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Back Four Problems, and the Perils of Lallana at RWB

Firstly let me say this isn't a Lallana or Rodgers-agenda article. This isn't a character assassination on the Liverpool number 20. This is just a fan who can't fathom as to why Brendan Rodgers keeps trying to use Adam Lallana as a wing-back. Is the Reds' manager afraid of reverting to a back 4? Many...

Is Henderson fit to fill Gerrard’s boots?

With Steven Gerrard announcing his intention to leave Liverpool at the end of the season and head for pastures new – namely Los Angeles – there have been many fans who have stated that we will never see his like again and that Gerrard can never be replaced. Whether he is the finest footballer...

Jordan Henderson: Heir to the Throne

It was truly an exceptional captain’s performance from Jordan Henderson against Burnley. With one rocket goal, an assist and a 92% passing accuracy, Henderson left little in doubt that leadership suits him. And the question of the captaincy is a hot topic. ‘Captain Fantastic’ is departing and many have questioned how much of Liverpool’s soul he...

Jordan Henderson: The Stats that do the Talking

When Jordan Henderson was announced as Liverpool's vice-captain, it was seen as a reward for his hard work and progression. When Steven Gerrard announced his imminent departure, the complexion changed, and even more so since the captain's absence through injury - all eyes are now on how he would step up. Criticisms came thick and...

“And we’re off!” – Liverpool’s Race for Top Four

Amid the meritorious hyperboles circulating around numerous timelines on social media, be it Twitter or Facebook, there is a considerable amount to be joyous about at the moment. After the dark days of December; the perpetual post-weekend depression after another dismal Liverpool display and the crushing notion of missing out on fourth - Brendan's "Tricky...

How Brendan’s Pre-Season Resolutions Are Starting To Come To Fruition

Whether it was due to the millions of pounds spent on recruits in the summer, or the fact that our deadly front man Daniel Sturridge was missing for nearly five months, Liverpool did not resume where they left off last season following the exit of the ever-iconic (and troublesome) Luis Suarez. Queue the 'Rodgers Out'...

Five Fingers Became a Fist of Liverpool Unity

Tuesday 9th December, the game finishes 1-1 at Anfield and Liverpool are knocked out of the Champions League after a pitiful display. Coutinho, Sakho, Moreno, Can, Lallana and Markovic all started the game on the bench. The knives were truly out for Brendan Rodgers. I have to admit, I was reaching out for the meat cleaver...

Analysing the Perks of a False 9 Against Man City

A magnificent Liverpool team performance against Manchester City saw The Reds cement themselves as a genuine challenger for the top 4. Wonder goals from the ever irrepressible Phillipe Coutinho and the energetic Jordan Henderson rightly got the plaudits, but one player that impressed me immensely yesterday was Raheem Sterling. Leading the line for Liverpool, the...

Liverpool FC: Time for Tunnel Vision?

After being knocked out by eventual-winners Chelsea in the Capital One Cup semi-finals and subsequently by Besiktas in the Europa League, Liverpool were suddenly left with only one remaining cup competition to fight for. The Reds being in the quarter-finals of the magical, domestic FA Cup already means that there’s no reason why they...

2 Sides to Brendan: Has He Done Enough?

Over Brendan Rodgers' time at Liverpool, his contrasting results have left many to wonder whether he has a future at the helm of the Reds. So, does he?

Liverpool v Burnley | Premier League Preview

The streak continues.  Almost unbelievably, Liverpool extend their Premier League unbeaten streak to 11 matches after pulling out a fantastic victory against Manchester City at Anfield.  They return to their home stadium during their weekday fixture against relegation battle Burnley, kings of the draw against larger teams.  Late in Liverpool’s run of fixture congestion,...

The Future of the 3-4-2-1: An Analysis

Having conquered Spain, Europe, and the eventually the World, Pep Guardiola was quick to shake things up with his Barcelona side. Once things become static, success slips away. Pass into the space, not the player's feet. Move the ball, move your team mate, move the opposition. The evolution of Barca's formation from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3 (with...

The Future of the Right Wing Back role at Liverpool

With March just around the corner it may seem a little early to start thinking about potential summer signings, but with Glen Johnson looking like he's rejecting a new deal and Javi Manquillo not getting a look in after some good early season form The Reds may be in the market for a right...

Besiktas v Liverpool | Europa League Knockout Stage – 2nd Leg

A goal ahead on aggregate.  A clean sheet at home that’s vital to the cause.  A Champions League spot remains the final prize. A return to hallowed grounds. The result of the last match tries to proclaim slim margins, but anyone watching last week knows that wasn’t the case.  Liverpool maintained a quality amount of possession...

Personnel Over System – Why the Current Form?

"It's the new defensive coach that we got in that everybody thought we needed. That has done the trick" - Brendan Rodgers after the win at Southampton. Basking in his own glory post-Southampto similarly to a man embracing the smell of his own fart. We witnessed a very smug Brendan Rodgers deliver that quote with a...

The Real Costs of Forming a Grassroots Team

Grassroots football is a popular weekend events; millions participate in these teams each year as a way to have fun and keep fit. Grassroots football teams do require certain costs and guidelines.  Knowing the expenditures will help in fundraising efforts in order to get the team of the field to play. In fact, organizers and...

Liverpool FC: Achievement Unlocked

We have all gone through games where we struggle at Level 47, or some other game where we are stuck at Level 82 and are awaiting a cheat code to crack the game. The pre-game emotions yesterday felt something like that. Chelsea at home against Burnley drop 2 points. Matic out for 3 games - FOR...

Simon Mignolet: Thou Shall Not Pass

On a popular football management game - the one inventively titled Football Manager - the attribute for a goalkeeper’s distribution with feet is called “kicking”, not “passing”. This crude definition of one of the footballing aspects of a goalkeepers' game, indicates that there’s still some way to go before they’re considered the eleventh outfield...

A Career Resurgence For Mario Balotelli?

Mario Balotelli is well known for his attitude problems and lack of effort during football matches. When Liverpool signed the Italian in the summer transfer window, everyone knew it was going to be a gamble, would Mario play well for Liverpool or would he refuse to provide a pressing style of play? Throughout the season...

Sean Connery, Winners and Mario Balotelli

Mason: Are you sure you're ready for this? Goodspeed: I'll do my best. Mason: Your best? Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and f*ck the prom queen! When the squabble happened over who would take the penalty at Anfield I like many watching it unfold had a range of conflicting thoughts and...

Bogey Teams | The Epitome of Liverpool’s Frustration

For the centuries that this magnificent sport has been played, there is always that ‘one team’. The team that gets you so spontaneously dazzled as to why you can’t seem to break them down. From Tenerife to Real Madrid or Dundee Utd to FC Barcelona, everybody’s had one. Liverpool of course, being the wonderfully...

Pjanic outside of the box or Can Liverpool add a touch of Clasie?

The link to Miralem Pjanic is a welcomed one. No doubt it's just a rumour but to be linked to someone of that quality is refreshing. I'm not convinced the numbers being quoted are that accurate, they seem steep but what'd you expect when the story is made up. However, there is sense in making...

The Rotational Conundrum for Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool

You really can’t help being a tad hopeful and optimistic about the Reds’ recent change of fortunes. The Reds are now the team in form, so says pundits, as well as our very own bloggers and podcasters alike. Critics who had their teeth gnashing at Rodgers’ failure to address gaping issues that got us...

The Sturridge Effect

Selhurst Park hadn't been a welcoming theatre for Liverpool FC for the best part of twenty years, before Saturday night. The last Liverpool player to score a goal, for a winning side, at the home of Crystal Palace was none other than Oyvind Leonhardson, way back in December of 1997. Perhaps, therefore, there may well...

Liverpool v Besiktas | Europa League Preview

Don’t mention the Champions League... ...except perhaps when giving a timely reminder that this season will be the first in which the winners of the Europa League gain automatic qualification for Europe’s premier competition the following season. Would it be better for Liverpool to concentrate their efforts solely on the league and attempt to qualify via finishing...

(Raheem Can’t Get No) Satisfaction | Sterling Contract Saga

As the seemingly annual Raheem Sterling contract saga drags on into another week, it’s worth taking in the following quote from one of the best man-managers the game has seen: "You can't be satisfied just because you've achieved something. Satisfaction is the biggest enemy of an athlete." Ottmar Hitzfeld Brendan Rodgers’ approach to these situations aligns well...

The Liverpool Screw Job | Lovren Vs Sakho

The Liverpool changing room. Morale is high after the late Tottenham win but that's not enough for Brendan Rodgers. The owners are in town and he needs to make an impression. Brendan: "Listen, lads, fantastic effort tonight. It's a great win, you all showed great technical ability. Even you, Dejan, you made no mistakes when...

Coutinho’s Top Moments So far & Areas for Improvement

The 2015 January transfer window was a pretty dull one to say the least. Whether it was due to the lack of abusive fans outside stadiums on deadline day, or Liverpool's subdued business done on the in-comings end remains to be known. That was, of course, until around half-an-hour prior to the eleven o'clock...

Crystal Palace v Liverpool | FA Cup Fifth Round Preview

Oh, Palace.  How you’ve become the bane of Liverpool’s existence lately.  Selhurst Park is no friendly place to play for any side, but we’ve performed worse there than any other ground.  If you can even believe it, we’ve traveled there six times since 2000, and haven’t won once (0W-2D-4L).  If Brendan Rodgers is adamant...

Memoirs of a Brendan Rodgers Disciple

August 31st 2014 I knew it. I bloody well knew it! “Brendan Rodgers relied on Luis Suarez for the success of last season” they said. HA! Be the Lord, the Reds were as good as last year today. Liverpool went to White Hart Lane and told Tottenham “we are just better than you lot.” And...
