Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Adam Lallana Showing the Signs of Successfully Slotting into Liverpool

A Merseyside derby win would have been the perfect catalyst for Liverpool to get going on winning run, especially when the performance was better than what is has been in recent weeks. However, no one can be blamed for the uncharacteristic goal that Phil Jagielka pulled out the hat. 99 times out of 100, that...

Liverpool v FC Basel Preview: Opposition Scouting and Info

On their return to Champions League football after a five year absence, Liverpool made hard work of a home fixture against Ludogorets Razgrad - the so-called minnows of group B. Next week they embark on a trip to the home of perennial Swiss champions, FC Basel, who have a history of troubling English sides...

Liverpool FC: What Do We Need To Do To Save Our Season?

This article is being written in the immediate aftermath of a Jagielka thunderbolt that robbed two points from Anfield. What was a very decent performance from the Reds, was let down but the inability to put the ball in the net to secure all the points. Points we were definitely in need of. At...

Raheem Sterling: The Best Player in the Premier League?

Every season you’re bombarded with tweets and articles about a world beating 18 or 19 year old playing here or there around Europe. Gotze, Hazard and Lamela all spring to mind from the last few campaigns. However, this year the player on everyone’s timeline is Raheem Sterling. He is easily working his way into...

Why Always Him? The Gerrard Compromise

Sooner or later it always comes back to Steven; at least that’s how it’s seemed for Liverpool’s talismanic captain throughout the last decade. Whilst owners, managers and talented colleagues from all corners of the globe have come and gone, Gerrard has remained. An unrelenting red spirit, albeit an inevitably waning force. At 34yrs old Gerrard...

Liverpool FC: The Rough Edge of the Diamond

Right. Let’s get this clear up front. Me and tactics? It’s like asking David Cameron to be compassionate. However, lately, I’ve made an effort to try and make sense of this Liverpool side. Watching it all I’m so confused as to what on earth it is we’re trying to do. Why play Gerrard and Lucas...

The ‘Big Game’ factor: A Good Form of Pressure For Liverpool

Granted, no one would have described the feeling going into the penalty shootout against Middlesbrough as “good pressure. However, when the play was beginning to dry up towards the end again, all I could think was that a so called “big game” was needed. Even just to stimulate some more creative and explosive play, games...

We Are PenaltyPool! | Liverpool & Penalties: Lucky or Planned?

The best way to get over a defeat is to win the next match; so the the old adage goes, and who are we to argue? Happily, participating in four competitions means you never have to wait too long for a chance at redemption. The ignominy of Saturday's teatime capitulation, to a Stewart Downing...

Stop The Press: Liverpool’s Pressing Decline Due to Fatigue or Personnel?

It's been a disappointing week in the Premier League for the supporters of Liverpool FC as the team lost back to back games to Aston Villa and West Ham United. What was even more frustrating was the manner of the defeats, devoid of the attacking verve shown against Tottenham and bereft of the pressing...

Brendan Rodgers: A Man For All Seasons?

Fuming is one way to put it. Disgusted another. Sadly, not surprised. It’s been a full 30 odd hours since the West Ham game. I’ve been quiet, composed (to a degree) and quick to check myself before sending a tweet in rage at the issues that have been brewing for a while. I’ve been through a...

West Ham 3-1 Liverpool: Tactical Analysis

After the midweek game against Ludogorets, there were increased calls for Rodgers to change back to the diamond 4-3-1-2 shape that had worked so well against Tottenham. Part of this was to help give Balotelli some support up front that had been sorely lacking in both of the previous games and also to bring...

Football Fans Are Hypocrites

If I were to call you a hypocrite, chances are you’d be at least a little offended. After all, nobody likes being called names do they? However, as a football fan - whether you like to admit it or not - being one is almost second nature. In fact, if you’re not one I...

Brendan’s Blind Spots

Admittedly this has been written in the aftermath to an atrocious performance from the Redmen away at West Ham United, however that's down more to my laziness than anything I saw during the game. The fact is, these problems have been there for a long time. A quick disclaimer before we start, I am a huge...

Victor Valdes: The view from Barca – Q & A with Rafael Hernandez

When  Simon Mignolet joined the Reds last summer hopes were high for the young Belgian keeper who had impressed during his time at Sunderland. Though eyebrows were raised at how abruptly Reina was sent out on loan to Napoli, many reassured themselves that given such a decision Liverpool's management must've been happy with the...

Every Tale Has Its Villains | Liverpool FC

Like the Joker to Batman. Like Moriarty to Sherlock. Like Scar to Mufasa. Every hero has the dark shroud overcome them at significant points of the story. Yet there doesn’t seem to be a cure in sight. Every tale has it’s villain, and Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool has certainly met theirs; and conveniently, as if it...

Liverpool 2 Ludogorets 1 In-Depth Tactical Analysis: Much To Improve On

Football has a funny habit of exposing almost every emotion you could ever possibly have. Occasionally, it even exposes ones you didn't know were possible for you to have. Jordan Henderson | Why He’s The Correct Choice For Vice Captain

A dramatic turnaround shows the measure of a player, and none more so than Jordan Henderson, who has been named as Liverpool’s new vice-captain. When he first came to Liverpool, only 20 years old, the glimpses we saw in his first season were quite timid, and looking like this step was one too big at...

Since the introduction of the diamond system into the Liverpool team last season, the overall performance of the team improved radically. This article aims to look at the various build-up plays that are involved in the 4-3-1-2 system or the diamond system, as it is commonly known. The basic principle in this system is to...

The Man Made of Glass | Daniel Sturridge

Against Aston Villa on Saturday, it was evident we lacked ‘something’ up front. I feel Sturridge is that ‘something’ – as well as Sterling, but he was on the bench. On Friday the 5th of September 2014, English striker Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool’s most prolific goal scorer in his first 50 games in the Premier league era,...

Instead the pots, seeds, and pieces of paper aligned to hand Liverpool a group of balance, which...

One Night in Istanbul

Opposing fans often tease Liverpool supporters over our tendency to re-live past successes. The usual "you're living in the past" is a favourite comment, or "if you were winning titles now you wouldn't need to keep bringing it up" and "your club's history not the future." The thing is, living in the past for Liverpool...
