Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. The Curious Case of Mario Balotelli

“If it was my choice, I would always go with two strikers. It’s the way I like to play, but Brendan asked me to play as the first striker.” These are the words of Mr. Mario himself, back in October. Balotelli has been heavily criticised in recent months by practically everyone in football. Everyone has...

Bring Back the Joy of Supporting Liverpool FC

The dream was built on this. I was in it, you were in it, we were in it We were the makers, we were the protectors Every Saturday, there was a bountiful Every Sunday, till we were full The frenzy, the passion and those innumerable feelings Nobody stood a chance Not that we gave them a chance While some got success, some...

Boldness at the Bernabéu | Liverpool FC

There was singing, there was cheering, and Adrian Chiles was made to look a bit of a spoon on live television; you'd be forgiven for thinking the Liverpool fans partying in the Spanish capital had just watched their side complete a memorable win over the European champions in their own back yard. They hadn't. As news...

Oh Captain, My Captain: Should Gerrard Stay or Should He Go?

It’s always been a personal belief of mine that no player is bigger than Liverpool Football Club. This motto has served me well when I thought I’d have died of a broken heart when players have exited the club, but Liverpool Football Club and I have always bounced back and gone from strength to strength....

Real Madrid v Liverpool Preview – The Impossible Possibilities

Just under two weeks ago we saw Real Madrid come to Anfield and give Liverpool a lesson in what it’s like to play at the top level of European football. With four seasons out of the Champions League, and a group of players and staff with little experience of the competition, we saw a...

How Rodgers’ Tactical Changes were Thwarted | Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

It was around this point last season that Liverpool were playing a back three. The basic idea behind it was to free up Sturridge and Suarez, allowing them to to play up front together whilst keeping a strong enough base behind them. This system lasted just over a month until the 2-0 loss to Arsenal at...

Where is the Diamond? | Why are Liverpool Using the 4231?

In mineralogy, diamond is a metastable allotrope of carbon, where the carbon atoms are arranged in a variation of the face centred cubic crystal structure called the diamond lattice. Now in simpler terms, a diamond would be a pretty damn good formation for LFC in this moment in time. Whereas the 4231 on the other...

Liverpool 2 Tottenham 1 | U21s Match Report and Tactics

On a mild Hallows Eve at Langtree Park, St Helens, Liverpool U21s defeated Tottenham Hotspur by two goals to one. A reasonable crowd resisted the urge to daub themselves in fake blood or go around knocking on doors asking for sweets, and were rewarded with a decent game of football, as well as some encouraging...

The Case for the Liverpool Defence Part 2: ‘Midfield and Beyond’

In Part I, I looked at the individual members of the back ‘5’ (including the GK), and the most likely rotational or still to return individuals, each with their own pluses and minuses. In Part II, I want to look at the midfield options and striker responsibilities relative to defence, the overall strategy and...

Is it possible to buy success in the Premier League? TonyBet has collected the data from each transfer window over the past five seasons - only including ever-present clubs - trying to find the team with the best (and worst) value for money, by comparing the average net spend with their average finishing position in...

Does Rodgers Know Liverpool’s Best Eleven?

Three games in six days represents a tough week for any team, even Liverpool. A midweek date with Ancelotti's "Galacticos Mark II" was never going to be plain sailing, and the distraction (albeit a welcome one) of playing the planet's biggest club, made team selection for Saturday's league match (against Hull) all the more...

Rodgers vs The Committee – Is It Only A Matter Of Time?

We’re all experts when it comes to transfers aren’t we? Whether you are an armchair scout who watches hours of football or a more casual fan who relies on YouTube clips, the chances are you have an opinion on who you think the club should buy. As a result, you simply can’t understand why...

The Case for the Defence: Part 1, ‘The back 5 of Liverpool’

Last week, on the 'Jumpers for Goalposts' pod in one of our more serious moments, we took a look at the travails of the Liverpool defence...notice please, I specifically say 'defence', not 'back four', 'central pairing' or other, more targeted breakdown. There is a reason for this, and one that surprisingly perhaps, when having...

Liverpool’s Catch-22 Season

One of the Webster definition’s for Catch-22 goes like this ‘a difficult situation for which there is no easy or possible solution’. Does it sound vague?  Let’s just make that simple by invoking Liverpool FC 2014/15. After all, the team this season is riddled with Catch-22 situations. Let’s start with the building block of the...

Liverpool FC’s Need For Speed

After the past few weeks... well, for the majority of this season so far, actually, Liverpool's performances from the 13/14 season seem like a lifetime ago. The qualities going forward that overwhelmed every defence they came up against have dramatically fallen. The defence has obviously been the talking point over the past few weeks. With...

Me, My Opinions about Liverpool and My Rear End

Opinions eh! They are like.... You know the rest and yes, we all have them. Especially those of us who crave the attention enough to write or talk about Liverpool on the many wonderful websites and podcasts there are at the moment. I'm one of them, of course I am, here I am writing about my...

Liverpool’s Defensive Shambles – Who is to Blame?

Fabio Aurelio, Sami Hyypia, Jamie Carragher and Alvaro Arbeloa. Now that was a solid back four. You felt confident going into games under Benitez with those four at the back. Well organised by Carragher, and Hyypia read the game magnificently. Time to stop drooling folks and wipe that smile of your face as that...

Defending Mario Balotelli

Apparently the time it takes for a player to be completely written off is getting smaller. Balotelli has made just eight appearances for Liverpool since his summer time switch from AC Milan and already the lively Italian is a flop, a failure, garbage to be jettisoned as quickly as possible. We’ve been here before...

Liverpool v Real Madrid Preview – Opposition Scouting Report

From Champions League group stage debutants Ludogorets Razgrad, to the most successful team in the history of the competition, Real Madrid; Liverpool’s return to the European elite has thrown up a mixed bag of a group which will see the defending champions roll up at Anfield on Wednesday evening. It should be one of those...

Liverpool vs QPR Preview | Lallana vs Fer Stats Comparison

Sturridge has been Hodged, Sterling has been Hodged and well we've all be Hodged in recent months. Regrettably the Hodging has yet to finish this year with one more international break to come in November.  Liverpool have 7 vital games before then including a double-header against European Champions Real Madrid and Chelsea at home....

Progressing at Pace : Sterling must be Praised and Protected

Raheem Sterling’s rise to prominence over the past 12 months will likely see the young talent sign a lucrative new contract at LFC in the coming weeks, however, the pace of the forward’s progression has also seen him burdened with great responsibility at the age of just 19. Having suffered a disjointed start to the...

Skrtel: Taking control – Lovren’s Injury Heaps Pressure on Slovakian

This Summer's transfer window was all about improving our defence. We learned first hand, and harshly, last year that our defence had to be worked on, and dramatically. There were numerous incidents where our mistakes at the back left us with memories that we really don't want to recollect or repeat. And even when we...

In-Depth Analysis: What’s Wrong with Liverpool FC this Season?

What a difference a summer break makes. Brendan Rodgers had Liverpool playing some of the best attacking football the Premier League had ever seen during the latter stages of last season, but now the Northern Irishman is facing question marks over his credentials and player signing policy. Seemingly, Liverpool have morphed into an ugly...

Stock-Taking: Liverpool’s Welcome Break

Seven games into the season and we've arrived at the second international break already. Ordinarily, I have no time for these most unwelcome of interuptions to weekend life. Like most Reds, and fans of other clubs I'm sure, the highlight of my weekend is watching club football. It's what we look forward to, what...

A Pause For Thought | What Liverpool FC and the Supporters Need To Do

Unwelcome though international breaks usually are for many Liverpool supporters, this time may be different. While it may be argued that  the momentum of a much welcome win against West Brom may be lost as a result of the break, this will be more than offset by the benefits of recuperation time and hopefully...

Is there still time & energy for an advanced role in Steven Gerrard?

When you think of the best moments in Steven Gerrard's career, you think of a few years ago, and back towards the Istanbul days. The further forward, higher up the pitch, scoring goals, getting in good positions, type of role that he took on so well, and made him one of the most legendary...
