Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

How Will Liverpool Cope With The Upcoming AFCON?

The Premier League title race looks set to be another unrelenting one for the teams involved. Following Manchester United’s recent run of results, it looks likely to be a battle between Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea to win the Premier League title this season.  However, the Reds are likely to face a huge challenge over...

One Night In Southampton

When Jürgen Norbert Klopp arrived at Liverpool, there was a sense of relief and hope. The style of football quickly changed, the tempo of the matches picked up, the gegenpressing began to unfold, and certain players started to fall under the intense pressure. Brendan Rodgers and his patterns of play were forever changing at Liverpool,...

Liverpool 4 – 0 Southampton – The Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 8.0 Some important stops allowed Liverpool to avoid any issues. The most important goalkeeper in Liverpool’s Premier League era, and irreplaceable in this side. Trent Alexander Arnold - 8.0 So impressive in his game. The elegance and natural ability he has is unmatched by any other attacking fullback. Another assist for this sensational talent,...

Darwin Núñez Courted by Reds, Citizens

A hat-trick is a rare and beautiful achievement for any footballer, one that puts their name on the front page of every paper from BettingNews88 to the biggest publication in the world. Unless, of course, it happens under special circumstances - like the one scored by Darwin Núñez in a game against Belenenses SAD...

Thankyou Arsenal

In a period where life is still somewhat irregular, a little bit scary and often times frustrating, there is still the odd football moment that brings pure joy. Last weekend Liverpool entertained a visiting Arsenal side, and their young manager, Mikel Arteta. For Liverpool’s fanbase, the pre game was relaxed, and confidence was high....

Liverpool 2 – 0 FC Porto – The Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 7.0 A peaceful night's work for the giant Brazilian. Even with the odd moment (where things looked precarious), he offers limitless assurance. Neco Williams - 6.5 Some composure is required, as steady and dependable is what is needed to be Trent's deputy. Got caught out a few times, and against better opposition it could...

Sadio Mane, his form and his contract situation

Only Mohamed Salah has more goals than Sadio Mane in the Premier League this season.  A lot of people will - perhaps rightly - focus on Salah being the top scorer. But the fact Mane is amongst the goals this season should not be overlooked. For most wide forwards, a haul of 11 Premier League...

Should Kostas Tsimikas be a starter for Liverpool?

Kostas Tsimikas is going to give Jurgen Klopp a selection headache.  The Greece international impressed yet again against Arsenal as he extended his run of starts without conceding a goal to seven. In fact, Liverpool are yet to concede in a game Tsimikas has started.  The 25-year-old hasn’t put a foot wrong and many fans believe...

Tyler Morton – An Opportunity To Shine

Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Trent Alexander Arnold all graduated through the Liverpool academy. The success of each is part of the clubs illustrious history, and it is always a joy to see homegrown talent succeed as Liverpool players. Within any historical football club, there are times when talent...

Stan Collymore – What Could Have Been

When Ian Rush was past his prime as a Liverpool starter, it coincided with the emergence of the brilliant Robbie Fowler. The young striker (Fowler) exploded onto the scene with a flurry of goals. In the era of Roy Evans, it was still common place for teams to operate with two main strikers. Where...

What should Liverpool do with Neco Williams?

The international break is an issue for two reasons: first, there’s no football for what feels like forever. Second, people start to judge players on what they’re doing for their national team and then complain that they aren’t replicating these performances at club level. It happened with Gini Wijnaldum and it is now happening...

Three Reasons Why Liverpool Will Win The Premier League This Season

The Premier League reaches its third international break of the season, but when the action resumes in a couple of weeks, the most crucial part of the season gets underway. Liverpool returns to action at Anfield against the in-form Arsenal, but why will the Reds win the Premier League this season? Jurgen Klopp’s side are...

What does Steven Gerrard have to do with Aston Villa to get the Liverpool job?

That seems to be the question everyone has been asking since his appointment at Villa Park.  Some of the expectations being placed on him are over the top. People want him doing well with Villa in Europe, they want him pushing for the top six, doing well in domestic cups and taking scalps in the...

The Player Ratings: Liverpool 4 – 0 Arsenal

Alisson Becker - 7.5 Mistakes will come now and again, but the world's best stopper showed a commanding presence in a routine display. Trent Alexander Arnold - 9.5 Sensational. The teams primary playmaker is transcending the fullback position. Any manager in world football (club football anyway) would have this man over any other, and his domination of...

What should Liverpool do with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain?

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain really found his groove as a midfielder for Liverpool during the 2017/18 campaign. He was a whirlwind in the middle third and he seemed to thrive in the chaos created by Jurgen Klopp’s ultra-aggressive system.  If you think back to the games against Manchester City, he was the wildcard. Pep Guardiola loves to...

The Reds’ Midfield Going Forward

Standards have now become so high that any dropped points can lead to dismay within the Liverpool fanbase. After a draw at home to Brighton, and a loss to West Ham, Liverpool head into this weekend with a clear need to improve. The international window has (as always) brought back an array of injury concerns....

Assessing Andy Robertson’s 2021/22 Form

Andy Robertson's place in Liverpool's starting line-up is under intense scrutiny. Over the past few weeks, maybe even the past couple of months, the calls for Kostas Tsimikas to replace him have grown progressively louder. Before the season began, I'd argue that the only position up for debate in Liverpool's strongest XI was centre-forward, but...

Liverpool’s Route To Fantasy Football

The want of any football fan is their team to be winning. The added fantasy scenario attached to that dream, is often too far fetched to comprehend. Yet in the modern game, fantasy football may not be that far away for Liverpool Football Club. With Newcastle set to embark on a new era, they join...

Loan Watch: How are Liverpool Players Getting on in the Championship?

The Championship has been a great league for developing Liverpool players in recent years, whilst simultaneously improving the teams they are loaned to. As the arrangement has been beneficial for both Liverpool and Championship clubs in the past, it’s no surprise to see Reds players on loan in the Championship in the 21/22 season. Ben...

The New Sporting Director

Any new role undertaken at a sporting team (let alone a major club like Liverpool FC), brings a certain amount a risk, especially when the role was previously engineered with brilliance. FSG have made some high profile mistakes along the way, yet the overall structure of the club is now one to be admired. As...

My Greatest Liverpool Match

I was born on 12/11/81, so have been fortunate enough to witness some truly magnificent games as a Liverpool fan. The opinions and preferences are far reaching, and the glorious fact is that Liverpool FC continues to offer brilliance as a football club. To look at singular games, I can easily think of marvellous matchups...

How To Approach The Transfer Window

As the next international window begins, more and more players will be heading off to represent their specific countries. The amount of players that will be returning in a state of good fitness, is as ever, unpredictable. Liverpool have undertaken this first stage of the season with as many questions as answers. Some games and...

West Ham 3 – 2 Liverpool – The Player Ratings

West Ham 3 - 2 Liverpool - The Player Ratings Alisson Becker - 5.0 A poor game by this mans standards, couldn’t deal with the physical nature within the box and wasn’t commanding at all. These games will happen, but he’s world class and can’t be elite every game. Trent Alexander Arnold - 6.5 A tough game overall,...

The Most Outstanding Liverpool Players in Club History

Doubtlessly, Liverpool FC is one of the most successful football clubs. The Reds have a ton of awards. It has a rich history that implies a lot of remarkable events. Not all of them helped the team achieve success in the international arena. However, it's an unarguable fact that Liverpool FC is a club...

Steven Gerrard & The Ballon d’Or

With Liverpool now fielding a rotating cast of midfielders, it’s going raise the subject once more as to who Liverpool may sign in the next window. The reality is that no midfielder will probably arrive until next summer, when James Milner is poised to leave the club. There are certain avenues that can be...

Using Liverpool’s Best in the Fantasy Premier League

Liverpool currently lies second in the Premier League table. Jürgen Klopp’s Reds are three points behind Chelsea and two ahead of Manchester City who are third. They have scored 29 goals in their opening 10 league games, an average of almost three goals per game. That is a hugely impressive tally from a sample...

Liverpool 2 – 0 Atletico Madrid – The Player Ratings

Alisson Becker - 7.0 I hope he enjoyed the show. The disallowed goal was one of his few moments in a quiet game. Trent Alexander Arnold - 9.5 The best right back in world football continues to show his amazing talent and outrageous delivery. Two assists and a brilliant setting of game tempo in the first half,...

Time To Welcome Simeone

Diego Simeone is one of the world's most important and impressive managers. His tenure as Atletico Madrid boss is simply sensational, and his want to win is perhaps unmatched in world football. If Liverpool are to remain relevant on the European stage, they must accept and relish this Argentinian as an enemy to overcome,...

Liverpool FC in the Football World

Liverpool FC is one of the most renowned football clubs that have made British football famous worldwide. Fans are well aware of all the titles the team has won since 1892. However, it's worth noting that Liverpool FC has experienced ups and downs but never stopped and was always looking for new trophies. Here...

A Jekyll and Hyde Midfield

I have written more about Gini Wijnaldum this season than last. His off ball intelligence was so understated, he could glide through games merely taking up good positions, and aiding the system with pure intelligence. His ability to help shield a solid defence, made that defence one of the best in Europe, and his...
