Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Which Loaned Out Players Will Thrive Under Jurgen Klopp?

Jürgen Klopp is a manager that can really get the best out of a player. The German’s ferocious manner and attitude can act as the catalyst for big performances as his charges take the lead from their manager and play at the same tempo Jürgen prowls at the touchline. This is probably his biggest...

Liverpool 1 Crystal Palace 2: Player Ratings

Liverpool were defeated by their bogey team of recent times, Crystal Palace, on a wet, Sunday evening at Anfield. The Reds made a comeback after conceding an early goal, but suffered the set-piece blues as they fell to their first defeat under Jurgen Klopp. There are certainly lessons to be taken from tonight. Simon Mignolet...

Ibe-lieve in Jordon!

When you have confidence, you can have a lot of fun. And when you have fun, you can do amazing things. Joe Namath  Liverpool’s victory against Bournemouth in the Capital one cup was the turning point for one of England's brightest stars Jordon Ibe. Not every turning point requires two assists and a hat trick. Some turning...

Re-Evaluating Season Goals for Klopp’s Rampant Reds

Six games into Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool reign and it feels like I am supporting a different Liverpool. The same group of players have been transformed from underperforming disappointments to a versatile squad with competition in key positions. Klopp’s reds now have three victories on the bounce, including a very sweet and very comprehensive win...

Roberto Firmino – The Game Changer

Spatial awareness is defined as "the ability to be aware of oneself in space". Positional awareness is defined as "the understanding of positions of objects within an environment". For me a player can have all the ability with a ball at their feet, but to become truly elite, they must have excellent positional and spatial awareness. Roberto...

Liverpool Vs Crystal Palace | Tactics, Team News and Stats

Alan Pardew, another manager who divides opinion, brings his Crystal Palace side to Anfield on the back of a good start to the season, albeit more inconsistent in recent weeks. The Eagles have won two, drawn one, and lost three of their previous six, although they were unlucky not to beat Manchester United last...

Alberto Moreno – Revitalised and Reborn

Alberto Moreno or 'Albie' as he's lovingly known, is fast becoming a fan favourite at Liverpool football club. A player who in his own words started the season with an "inner rage", due to not being given a fair opportunity to play; has taken his chance with both hands and is flourishing under Jürgen...

Here’s to You Jordan Henderson – Return of Captain Fantastic

The good news keeps on coming for Liverpool FC, Jordan Henderson has returned to training and should be available to play after the international break! The Liverpool captain, who still divides opinion amongst fans and pundits, has been absent since August after he broke a bone in his foot during training. Before the bone break,...

Observations from Liverpool’s victory against Rubin

Liverpool stretched their unbeaten run to twelve games with victory against FC Rubin (Rubin Kazan to you and I). It's the third successive win for the Reds under Jurgen Klopp and leaves them in a good position to qualify from their Europa League group. Klopp made his intentions clear by flying a strong side out...

Lucas Leiva – Tackles, Interceptions and Over The Top Praise

Liverpool fans are a sentimental bunch. I often think supporters are quick to jump to the defence of long serving players Martin Skrtel and Lucas Leiva because they're the two remaining players from the Rafa days so kind of remind people of Istanbul. It's silly of course because neither player happened to be at the...

Klopp Talks Gerrard, Regret and Tourism

"My one regret in life is that I am not someone else." Woody Allen All of us know the irksome sting of regret. How many times have you, dear reader, walked away from a verbal confrontation, thwarted by your own inarticulacy, only to be imbued later with what the French call l'esprit de l'escalier - staircase...

Adam Lallana: Is His Pressing Enough to Warrant a First-Team Place?

Adam Lallana’s a funny one, isn’t he? He throws in a sexy little Cruyff turn one minute and follows it up with a weak shot. He draws gasps from the crowd as often as he does groans. His Liverpool career to date has been the very definition of stop-start, as niggly injuries have struck just...

Scouting the Bundesliga: Defenders for Klopp

“The first thing you need, maybe in life, is a stable defence.” He said, enthralling the world’s Red collective. “Because you can only stay confident in a game when you know not each offensive move of the other team is a goal. That's the first thing and when you start a development nobody starts a...

Don’t Worry, Be Happy – Enrique, Mourinho & Lucas Bring The Comedy

"If you want to be happy, be." Leo Tolstoy "You're in pretty good shape, for the shape that you are in." Dr. Seuss An unusual thing can happen when one is confronted with the disquietingly fragile nature of one's own mortality. Instead of becoming maudlin and resentful of the unseen forces threatening to extinguish life, sometimes the reaction...

Christian Benteke – Klopp’s Pocket Ace

While it's arguable as to who is the top dog in Liverpool’s strikers – whether it’s Daniel Sturridge who is the favoured spearhead or Christian Benteke who leads the pack – one thing that’s for certain is that they are different types of players. One is your agile, pace-driven striker with a fiery left...

Bundesliga Attackers That Would Improve Liverpool

Liverpool’s lack of goals, both this season and last, have become something of a concern. So far this season, before victory against Chelsea this past weekend, Liverpool had scored more than one goal in a Premier League match on only one occasion, against a woeful Aston Villa side. A tally of just 52 goals...

Coutinho: Why Confidence and Pressing Matters

The struggles of Philippe Coutinho in recent weeks have been well documented on this website. The diminutive Brazilian hasn't had the best of times since his beautiful long-range winner at Stoke City on the opening day of the season. So what has been the issue for Coutinho? Lack of options in front of him? Lack of...

Without Rodgers, We Wouldn’t Be Here

You all know, I'm no advocate of Brendan Rodgers.  There are have been several articles and podcasts that I've been on where I've slated, bemoaned, and even be-damned our former manager. But, if we're honest with one another, we wouldn't be in this current position without him. Going back a little, we were a club that...

Klopp’s Tactics Inspire Liverpool to Victory Against Chelsea

Jurgen Klopp hasn't had it easy since taking over as Liverpool boss. He's had to cope with an injury crisis  of unparalleled proportions. It's not often you have your three first choice strikers out injured as well as your captain. Not only this though, he's had to put up with the British media way...

Cherry-Klopped: Justice for Jose

“Bück dich, befehl ich dir.  Wende dein antlitz ab von mir. Dein gesicht ist mir egal. Bück dich!” – Rammstein, “Bück Dich.” 60% possession. 20% conversion. 100% killed-it. The Heavy Metal Juggernaut has arrived. If people thought Klopp was going to iron-out the creases, then they’ve got more than they bargained for. He bulldozed them. This was a...

Observations from Liverpool’s dismantling of Chelsea

The title is not misleading; Liverpool dismantled Chelsea. Jurgen Klopp had a gameplan and executed it to perfection. I would be lying if I said I was shocked at Liverpool truly putting Chelsea to the sword. I have been confident about it this week and, had Christian Benteke been fit enough to start, people may have been...

Chelsea 1 Liverpool 3: Liverpool Player Ratings

Klopp is now unbeaten in his first five games as Liverpool manager and here's hoping the undefeated streak continues! Simon Mignolet - 6 Apart from being beaten by...

Liverpool beating Chelsea is the sweetest thing in football

For  a Liverpool fan, there are very few feelings that can top the joy at the final whistle of a victory over our age-old rivals, Everton and Manchester United. What could be sweeter than wins over your local rivals and long-term competitive rivals? Well, the answer to that of course is beating Chelsea. The Liverpool...

Steven Gerrard: We Need Our Centre Back

“He’s big and he’s fucking hard.” He was our Captain. He was our Leader. He was our “Never-Miss-Set-Piece-Taker.” Now, he is our biggest regret. When Gerrard left for LA Galaxy, I was pleased. I was excited to see a new team, a new Captain, going in a new direction. Maybe the disappointment of the 14/15 season was...

Why is Philippe Coutinho Struggling?

Since the departure of Luis Suarez in the summer of 2014, only one man has claimed the title of Liverpool superstar: Philippe Coutinho. The little Brazilian has twisted, turned, and volleyed his way into the hearts of Kopites since his arrival on Merseyside in January of 2013. His quick pace, creativity, and laser-like accuracy...

Just Kidding – Klopp Praises Liverpool’s Youth

"Maturity is often more absurd than youth and very frequently is most unjust to youth." Thomas A. Edison "Youth is happy because it has the capacity to see beauty. Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old." Franz Kafka “It takes a very long time to become young." Pablo Picasso One of the most profound ways in...

7 Reasons Why Klopp Is The Coolest Manager Ever

You can’t go a minute without hearing something about Klopp these days – and it’s no wonder. Even though he’s barely warmed his feet managing Liverpool, Klopp’s already shown that he knows what he does and that he puts his heart into this which is probably a big reason as to why everyone seems...

Roberto Firmino – The Creative Spark Liverpool Have Lacked

Prior to kick-off against Bournemouth there was an article from the Daily Mail on Roberto Firmino. I won't share the link because it's not worth your time but in this piece the writer states how our newest Brazilian is failing to live up to the hype, how he's had ample chances to impress (he...
