Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Everton 1 Liverpool 1 : Player Ratings

A drab derby, characterised by a couple of shocking defensive errors, meant Liverpool left Goodison park with a point. Brendan Rodgers should be scratching his head as Liverpool reverted to a slow, methodical, predicable, I don't know what I am doing type of football as they struggled to create any major openings. However, the Reds...

Liverpool’s Problems Extend Far Beyond Brendan Rodgers

The pressure on Brendan Rodgers couldn’t be greater, and the cracks are beginning to show, just as they did for Liverpool managers of the past. The end of days for recent Liverpool managers has been signalled with a loss of their public dignity, and Rodgers is no different to the rest in this regard....

Everton v Liverpool: 3 Things To Think About

Ahead of the Merseyside derby this Sunday, Liverpool head into the historic tie under immense pressure. Unlike previous encounters, the Reds aren't the favourites. Brendan Rodgers has led the squad through a hail of poor performances and is only just holding onto his job, Daniel Sturridge has the weight of a club on his dodgy...

Liverpool’s forgotten man in the middle – Joe Allen

Joe Allen was always going to face an uphill battle ever since Brendan Rodgers labelled him “the Welsh Xavi” on the now infamous ‘Being Liverpool’ mockumentary documentary. Motor-mouth Rodgers clearly didn’t help Allen with such fanciful comparisons, but it’s another quote from his international manager, Chris Coleman, which underlines his qualities. “Joe is a great player....

Memorable Merseyside Derbies

This weekend’s Merseyside derby is arguably the biggest in years and certainly its outcome could carry particular significance for Brendan Rodgers and his future as Liverpool manager. So, in a break from all the pressure and speculation surrounding the current position of the club, I decided to take a nostalgic look back some of...

The Importance of Winning the Derby

Twitter is the breeding ground for bad ideas and I've seen plenty on there lately. From the petition to sign Marco Reus, the "let's all dress as Jurgen Klopp" for the Villa game movement that made the press to the recent "I hope we lose so Brendan Rodgers is sacked" gang that's starting to...

Best and Worst of Recent Merseyside Derbies

Derby day is around the corner. The time of the season when the city of Liverpool unites in an amalgamation of red and blue. Little red children walk hand in hand with little blue children. The elderly Toffee fan gazes longingly into the eyes of the of the recently retired Liverbird wondering if she...

Sturridge And Moreno Steadying The Ship

Forced jollity is invariably a terrible thing to be part of. When your heart is not in it, it's enormously difficult to actively enjoy anything. For much of this week, I've felt like one of the kids on the school bus hijacked by the Scorpio Killer in Dirty Harry. In an attempt to create...

The Two Dannys – Sturridge and Ings: Ready Made Strikeforce

Liverpool have had a few prolific partnerships in their history, a few spring to mind instantly with very little thought. John Toshack and Kevin Keegan, Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard and of course Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. Some...

The Merseyside Derby – A Family Feud

In the late months of 2000, my aunt and Godmother died. That’s the same person, by the way. It was a bad time but not a double tragedy. My aunty Pat was my Dad’s sister. She was very glamorous with a mop of blonde hair, had a hearty laugh and called me ‘soft lad’. I...

Walking On Through The Storm

It’s a stressful thing supporting modern Liverpool. Far more than just following a football team, having a pint, and hoping they will win the match when they take the field, which, after all, is what it really should be about. We fret about everything now. Fellow Reds willingly offer counsel on this matter on...

Have The Fans Finally Given Up On Brendan?

Something happened after Liverpool's 3-1 defeat to Manchester United a few weeks ago. Something that hasn't happened under the reign of Brendan Rodgers. The fans united and their voice became unanimous. Brendan Rodgers needs to go. Even during the dark days of last season, you could always find a big chunk of the fan...

A Guide to FC Sion

Liverpool's Europa League draw wasn't the toughest all things considered. Barring the trip to Russia there shouldn't really be anything there to concern us. There's no reason The Reds shouldn't top that group but It'd be foolish to take these matches for granted. Many fans won't be familiar with FC Sion, I doubt many...

AKloppalypse Now – Rodgers Angered By “Hysteria”

It's becoming deeply uncomfortable and complicated now, this drawn out but seemingly inevitable split between Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool Football Club. Saturday's victory, with it's teasing glimpses of the heady days of 2014, may have muddied the waters somewhat for FSG. Or perhaps it will have mattered not a jot. Sadly, those of us...

Brendan Rodgers – Under The Microscope

Since the departure of the mercurial Luis Suarez, it has not been the easiest of times for Brendan Rodgers, but where has it gone wrong, for a man believed to be so tactically astute? In this detailed article I intend to run over some of the more recent mistakes of Rodgers, and where the...

Five Observations From Liverpool 3 Aston Villa 2

Coming into this game, Brendan Rodgers instilled yet another new formation.  Using all but one of the team who faced Norwich, he utilised a 3412 tactic, to the surprise of not many people. This of course added to Rodgers’ constant idea of “transition” which is as equally frustrating as it is futile. Nevertheless, the...

The Curious Case of Bobby Firmino

Our transfer record under Rodgers has been filled with expensive mistakes and poor decision making with names like Markovic, Balotelli and Lovren all being proved as flops in their first season at the club. However, the general feeling was that we actually had a successful transfer window this summer with the free signing of...

Liverpool FC 3 Aston Villa 2: Player Ratings

Liverpool came out on the right side of a five goal thriller to take home all three points. For a change, one could say that the performance justified the result as Liverpool scored more than one goal for the first time this season. The game had some good signs, but there is still huge...

Restoring Liverpool’s Identity

Make Us Dream Again “Why do you care so much? It’s just a game. You can’t let it affect your life like that.” They’ll never understand. We’re a tricky bunch, us. Frivolous and fickle, temperamental and volatile. We want success, as all humans do; we invest hours and hours of our lives into it, in fact, but...

Injuries Could Temporarily Solve Our Striker Puzzle

Daniel Sturridge returned to Liverpool’s ranks against Norwich as a man under pressure. In fact, many Liverpool fans had pinned the potential successes of our season all on him, just as they had done last year with sad consequences. Liverpool’s squad for 2015/16 has been bolstered though by the incoming Benteke, Ings and Origi,...

Liverpool v Aston Villa Preview | Predicted Line-Ups

A crutch for Liverpool over the course of the past few seasons, Aston Villa return to Anfield without Christian Benteke.  Of course, Liverpool won’t have access to the big centre forward either, who is out for the next two fixtures with a hamstring injury.  Villa are back at home in 17th place, just above the...

Shaky Simon Mignolet Reverts To Nervous Performances

“Simon, are you sometimes over-thinking stuff?” Those were the words uttered by Mrs Mignolet last season as she attempted to resolve her then-fiancé’s form. Sure enough, after his wife’s inspirational chat, Mr Mignolet’s displays improved. The once erratic goalkeeper went back to basics and looked a different player in the second half of the season. But...

Brendan Rodgers, FSG and Missed Opportunities

Liverpool are in limbo. No matter what side of the fence you sit on when it comes to Brendan Rodgers you can't bury your head deep enough in the sand to not see that the club is currently in no man's land. There's no identity. There's no passion, from both players and staff. There's no...

A No-Win Situation For Brendan Rodgers

"Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their own minds." Franklin Roosevelt "Win a no-win situation by rewriting the rules." Harvey Spector, Suits In medieval times, folk had altogether different notions of what constituted a bad person. With predictable misogyny, it was often the ladies who came off the worst, what with that era's unsettling...

Pepijn Lijnders – The Managerial Wildcard?

"Keep your friends close but your enemies closer." I recently read an article on this site by the talented Rory Greenfield. It was a piece about why Jurgen Klopp was the sole candidate to take over as Liverpool FC manager if Brendan Rodgers were to leave. He talks about his playing style and what he'd...

The Top 16 ex-Liverpool Players in the Media

I have ranked the top 16 ex-Liverpool players in the media. In fact, I could only think of 16, so it could also be considered a list of the worst - there is quite a range of quality! Ex-players are eligible if they are - or will be - employed at some point in the media...

Back To The Future

When forced to abandon something one loves for a while, there are clear stages of grieving for that lost object of affection. Initially the pain is sharp, like that of a parent whose only child has just flown the nest. You battle the overwhelming impulse to reunite, interfere, intercede. Eventually, however, the severity of...

Dear Brendan….

Dear Brendan, Firstly, on behalf of thousands and thousands of Liverpool Football Club supporters from every corner of the globe we call home, I sincerely thank you for allowing us to dream again after years of frustration. You had allowed us to dream about lifting the Premier League trophy 18 months back. And today, you're...

A Tactical Look at the 3-4-1-2 Formation Against Norwich

Brendan Rodgers rolled out yet another tweaked formation against Norwich. Formations are just a template on paper, a team can be as fluid or as structured as it likes depending on the instructions the manager gives. The Liverpool formation against Norwich could've been viewed as 352 or 3412 depending on when Liverpool had possession...
