Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Will Steven Gerrard’s Spark Find its Place in The Galaxy?

The recent announcement that Steven Gerrard will be joining LA Galaxy at the end of this season will be met with plenty of questions, not least the age-old quandary of where to play him. His only role so far is that of designated player (a player who doesn't count towards the team’s salary cap),...

Attack isn’t The Best Form of Defence for Liverpool FC

Attack isn’t the best form of Defence. The shambles known as the Liverpool defence has been a, if not THE, topic of conversation amongst Liverpool fans ever since Brendan Rodgers took over at the club.  With the goals against column worsening with each season Rodgers’ is at the helm, its little surprise the defensive signings...

Fed Up of Transition at Liverpool FC

Here we go again….another transitional period awaits Liverpool Football Club. In fact, for the past 20 years Liverpool Football Club and the word transition have been together hand in hand. Only seven months have passed since our title charge and we now need to replace our legendary captain in a few months time. We may...

Why is Gerrard leaving LFC?

He is my footballing hero. The kid who became a man at Anfield that allowed so many fans like myself to dream. He was the player I saw in Istanbul, drive his team forward and win the Champions League. He is Steven Gerrard. Over the next six months the world will rightly laud his footballing...

Raheem Sterling: Adapting to a Striker’s Life

We had Sturridge, but we're still counting down the days until he returns. We tried Balotelli, but we haven't seen his quality. We tried Borini, and well... he got sent off. In days gone by we could have tried Steven Gerrard further up the pitch, but that isn't a long-term solution with him now being...

Liverpool FC Recruitment Analysis: Watching the Watchmen

After an exciting summer spending money on shiny new players, Liverpool FC set fans' pulses racing with the promise of defensive leadership, pace up front, guile in midfield, and those full-backs we’ve been looking for since the days of Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Rob Jones… Over a hundred million pounds were spent replacing Suarez, but...

Liverpool FC: Who’s In & Who’s Out | January 2015

A certain Marco Reus was at the forefront of my arrivals for January in my original piece, written exactly a month ago. Glen Johnson was one of three talked about exits from the club. Since then, Liverpool have won three matches, whilst drawing three and losing two. Have things changed since? Yes, substantially. As...

Father Figure Gone

Mario Balotelli, in my mind, has an acute case of Peter Pan syndrome. Why else would he behave like an immature teenager with his somewhat funny antics when not playing football in front of millions? Much has been written about his potential to be a world class player ever since he broke into the...

The Mourinho Hoodoo | Burnley Vs Liverpool Preview

Breaking the Mourinho hoodoo, kind of. Brendan Rodgers has never defeated Jose Mourinho, so how will he fare against the ‘Ginger Mourinho’ Sean Dyche, when he takes his Liverpool side to what will be a rowdy Turf Moor on Boxing day. The gruffly spoken Burnley manager has done a superb job with Burnley, following on from...

The Lesser of Two Evils | Liverpool’s Goalkeeping Woes

Is Brad Jones just a transient in the Liverpool goal? Brendan Rodgers’ comments about Mignolet being ‘indefinitely dropped’ seemed to suggest if Liverpool don’t sign a keeper in January, fans may be seeing an awful lot more of the Australian’s quiff between the sticks at Anfield. It’s been a rarity for Liverpool to have a...

Here Comes Saint Vincent – Vincent Enyeama

Last season Vincent Enyeama went 1,062 minutes without conceding a goal. The record was ended by a tame shot that caught a wicked deflection to smash off the post and into the Lille goalkeeper’s goal. The purple patch ended after eleven consecutive clean sheets but the Nigerian international would go on to add nine more...

Roberto Firmino – The Bundesliga’s Brazilian Star | AI’s Xmas Wish List

Hoffenheim’s Brazilian attacker Roberto Firmino was spared the embarrassment of his country’s World Cup nightmare, as Luiz Felipe Scolari chose to ignore the then 22-year-old’s impressive form for his club. As a result he’s remained relatively under the radar, but not for much longer. Scolari’s successor, Dunga, had no hesitation in calling up the young...

Give us a Hand – Samir Handanovic | AI’s Xmas Wish List

As I was in a maze on how to begin this piece, I was duly provided a helping hand by our manager himself as he outlined the reason for dropping Simon Mignolet in favour of Brad Jones for the game against Manchester United. I felt I had to change it because we have to find...

Five Players for Liverpool to Consider as the Window Approaches

As Liverpool’s season continues to drift, manager Brendan Rodgers will be waiting anxiously for the January transfer window to open. Having spent heavily over the summer, the club’s owners may not be happy at the thought of reinvesting next month but many believe that the Reds’ chances of remaining as top four contenders will...

Where There is Blame | Brendan Rodgers & FSG

Where there is blame... You’re approached by a business that wants you to become their new manager, you’re part of a shortlist of five people and you’re probably the least experienced of the lot. You prepare for the interview, after all this is a big opportunity, one you didn’t expect. You write up a 180 page...

A Manager’s Balancing Act | Liverpool FC

Is there a perfect Liverpool Manager? There have been twenty two people fortunate enough to manage Liverpool Football Club. Some successful, a few who failed to live up to the high expectations of the great club, and one, to my recollection, that was disastrous.  There has been a trend amongst them all since the 1990’s...

Rodgers Needs a Performance at Old Trafford

A lot has been made of Liverpool having a poor start to this season, but sitting 9th in the Premier League having accrued just 19 goals and with no Champions League campaign to speak of, it’s fair to say the state Liverpool find themselves in is more than just a poor start. The Liverpool...

Paulo Dybala: Our Next South American Hero? | AI’s Xmas Wish List

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS GOALS! Because the team is certainly missing them. A far-cry from the inevitable blitzkrieg of net-bulgers in the 2013/14 season, this current Liverpool team struggle to hit the proverbial barn door this season. Of course losing the talismanic Luis Suarez to Barcelona didn’t help, nor the four-month long injury...

How Rodgers Went Wrong

If you’ve ever read any of my football writing you will know that I’ve been a huge supporter of Brendan Rodgers. You might have also noticed that I tend not to refer to myself in articles that I write, until now. I generally refrain from doing so for a few reasons. The first is...

Liverpool Drop Out of the Champions League: What Next?

As painful and frustrating as it was to watch against Basel, the Liverpool manager, players and fans have come to the conclusion that we just weren't good enough. There were a couple of poor decisions that went against us on Tuesday, but overall, it was the performance over the six games that cost us,...

A True Legend as a False-Nine? Can Gerrard Play The Role?

Who needs a history lesson these days, especially as an article opener, right? Pfft. Let’s fast forward to the end of the summer of 2014 – past the shambles of Woy, the overly-domestic Kenny, and the brilliance of ‘SAS’ along with another 2nd place finish. To a time where only half of the feared ‘SAS’...

Alexandre ‘The Great’ Lacazette | AI’s Christmas Wish List

Possessing the ability to score a wide variety of goals, tenacious, direct, a good dribbler, able to play in a number of attacking positions …. A fighter. Now you could be forgiven for thinking that I was talking about a certain Uruguayan superstar whose absence from our football club continues to bring a tear...

Coming in second is Zak Forster with Wanyama The Watchman! Watchful Guardian Victor Wanyama is widely considered to be...

A Strong Case For A Strong Defensive Midfielder

It's been long debated (since the arrival of Rodgers, and probably before) that we needed a proper defensive midfielder in the team. And by this, I mean a midfielder who is defensive, not a midfielder who just happens to play his game in that space. There are a few key differences. The 'Pirlo' role (regista); his...

Blind-siding Euphoria | Liverpool FC

Euphoria was high. A young vibrant coach, from the school of Mourinho Man Management, along side a few other managers in Europe, joins in the tide of apparent change. A new generation of managers to succeed the old guard at clubs of reputations mimicking crumbling empires that hold sway the believe of capturing past...

The Magnificent Maxime Gonalons | AI’s Christmas Wish List

First up is Sam McGuire with The Magnificent Maxine Gonalons! Steadying the Ship – Get a Captain...

Liverpool’s Hinderson

First of all, excuse the awfully punned title. Although the title is admittedly a poor play on the word ‘hinder’ and Liverpool’s vice-captain Jordan Henderson, it does hold merit. Whilst there are a multitude of tactical and structural problems with Liverpool’s team at the moment, the utilisation of Henderson is one that has fallen under...

“Improving Game By Game” – Liverpool vs Sunderland Match Preview

"Improving Game by Game" As I begin to write my preview on the afternoon of the 4th of December, I reminisce back a year ago, where Norwich visited Anfield to face a vibrant and in-form Liverpool side. Four phenomenal strikes from ex-red Luis Suarez meant the Reds ran out 5-1 winners that day. Whilst we have yet to...

Liverpool’s Midfield Balance Without Gerrard

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers reached new heights during his second season at the club, seeing his team finish 2nd in the league, just 2 points behind eventual winners Manchester City. After several seasons of disappointment, the Liverpool team looked rejuvenated under Rodgers, striking 101 goals over the course of the campaign and doing so...
