Welcome Break - Scouser Tommies

Welcome Break - Scouser Tommies

The international break might have taken proper football away, but it’s not stopped Jim Boardman and Jay Reid from finding stuff to talk about for this week’s Scouser Tommies. Plenty to look forward to, as the League season gets back going again this Easter weekend after being so rudely interrupted, and for Liverpool it starts with the visit of Brighton. A huge game for the Reds, especially when you look at the fixture taking place after full-time at Anfield. Since the last episode there has been one game to forget, the FA Cup game down the East Lancs, but, as Jay and Jim say, as gutting as it felt at the time, that disappointment was more about who it was against than what the result really meant. For once the break might have done us a favour. With a certain sports ‘news’ channel seemingly putting something slightly less impressive than Coventry did the day before on a par with solving world hunger, it was best to avoid the papers and all national sports outlets for the week. Stick to the safety of your favourite LFC fan media. Especially when realising that those national outlets would soon be shelving their Manc love-in to fawn over everything Ingerland.  Sadly, the evil Nike corporation did something so evil that, no matter how hard you tried to avoid it, sooner or later you were bound to hear about the UK’s national team (or so it always seems, fans of the other UK national sides must think). The outcry over the colour of a cross on the back of an overpriced shirt was quite bemusing to watch from the sides for anyone who cares like Jim, Jay and pretty much all of Liverpool do. Of course it’s all Nike’s fault, it’s not like England’s FA get any say in the shirts they make so much money from.  Talking of money and blaming the wrong people, more progress was reported on the Everton takeover, although nothing exactly official which makes you wonder if anything is actually going to happen. The Premier League have (reportedly) said they are “minded to allow” the deal to go through, based on a number of conditions that effectively add up to demanding 777 put their money where their mouth is. Jay and Jim are kind of astounded at how long it’s all taken, at why 777 haven’t just got the deal done and taken Everton out of limbo if they’re good for the cash, at how much debt Everton are now in, at how that compares to what FSG paid to buy LFC not that long ago, and at how it’s all the Premier League’s fault. Only kind of astounded though, of course, this is Everton. This week: • Look ahead to LFC v Brighton • One game at a time but the start of an important run of games • Dangerous opponents, but surely we’ve learned that by now? • International break – how have Reds players fared? • How many will be coming back with new injuries? • Robbo is one, we await news of a scan, but are we as worried about him missing as we used to be? • Plenty of goals from Reds on their travels • Brief look back at the FA Cup exit • We’re over it now, but what can we learn from it? • Maybe get better at turning control and possession into goals? • The reaction to that game laughable, do they know it wasn’t the final? • The reaction to England’s shirt laughable, do they know it’s only a shirt that will soon be replaced by another?  • Do the leaders of the main political parties have nothing more important to try and get fixed?  • Everton’s takeover – what will happen if it doesn’t go through, and soon? • Would we miss them? • LFC Legends game – great to see Sven given such a memorable moment. • Could Liverpool do one more thing for him? • Premier League Hall of Fame – two ex-Reds nominated. • One an obvious pick for Reds fans, we’re not sure we could vote for the other • Maybe a mural means more anyway Learn more about your ad choices. Big Decisions- Part 1

Big Decisions- Part 1

Trev Downey and Dave Davis take on four major topics which may require some decisive action from Liverpool Football Club in the weeks and months to come. 1) PGMOL incompetence - should the club do anything? 2) Have LFC got City rattled and how can that potential psychological advantage be exploited? 3) How can the club make lemonade from the lemons of the FA Cup exit? 4) With the incoming Edwards/Hughes/New Manager regime what will the club do about the contracts of VVD, Salah and Trent? “Doubters to believers” A mantra that Jurgen Klopp has drummed into the Liverpool faithful from day one. For decades, three of them to be precise, Liverpool had mounted a few real title challenges, only to fall desperately short and fade into mediocrity thereafter. We’ve seen managerial changes, changes of ownership and players come and go. […]

By the looks of things, Liverpool are set to undergo another quiet summer in the transfer market. The Reds’ decision not to pursue a move for Timo Werner appears to be a sign of things to come, even though there is no ruling out the prospect of the odd addition coming in. One player who […]

There’s a strange narrative appearing online. Not only are Liverpool lucky to be in the position they find themselves in, but they’re also boring.  Firstly, we’ll address the latter. Fans aren’t used to seeing the level of control shown by the Reds this season. Even the Centurions didn’t have as many points as Liverpool do […]

On the night Liverpool were finally crowned Premier League champions, Jürgen Klopp was, as ever, keen to highlight the effort made by everyone at the club in putting The Reds right back up on their perch. Klopp and co had gathered the team together in a hotel for last night’s Chelsea vs Manchester City encounter. […]

Liverpool equalled their best win of the season and moved within one result of the Premier League title with a crushing 4-0 win over Crystal Palace at an empty Anfield. But what are the key stats from the best Liverpool performance in months? The Fab Factor This was some performance from Fabinho, who absolutely bossed […]

I’ve been writing about football – for whoever will have me, paid and unpaid, for over 30 years. Since the days when Liverpool reigned, not just Europe and the World like Jurgen Klopp’s class of 19/20 but crowed over England’s green but increasingly unpleasant land. This might well be the last time I write before […]

Liverpool moved three points closer to the club’s 19th league title success with a one-sided 4-0 win over Crystal Palace at Anfield on Wednesday night. Jürgen Klopp couldn’t speak highly enough about the performance, claiming he “loved it”. Goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, Fabinho and Sadio Mané gave The Reds a very comfortable victory. […]

109 days after Liverpool last won a game of football, you could almost be forgiven for forgetting just how mighty Jurgen Klopp’s title brigade really is. But this masterful performance reminded us why the Reds are a mere speck in the distance in this Premier League title race. After a steady restart against Everton, Liverpool […]

Liverpool moved within 2 points of the Premier League title with a resounding 4-0 win against Crystal Palace at Anfield. The Reds dominated proceedings from start to finish and made an in-form Eagles side look like they belonged in a different division. The victory means Manchester City must win at Stamford Bridge on the 25th […]

Now that’s the Liverpool we know playing the football we love! Four-nil against Crystal Palace to send Hodgson back down the motorway scurrying. Three more points, leaving Liverpool two from the title and just a game away potentially, should Manchester City fail to beat Chelsea on Thursday night. Here’s your ratings from Liverpool 4-0 Crystal […]
