The Transfer Show: Slot, Alonso and Liverpool’s Summer Crossroads

Trev Downey and Dave Davis assess the growing pressure on Arne Slot and why the Burnley draw became such a pivotal moment in the fan narrative. They explore how Xabi Alonso’s availability is shaping supporter opinion, the divide between UK-based reporting and European speculation, and why Liverpool appear determined to wait until the summer before making any managerial decision. This segment looks at belief, risk and whether Liverpool are prepared to hold their nerve while the noise around the dugout continues to grow. Learn more about your ad choices. The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. The Bizarre Case of Jordan Henderson’s Daft Sending Off

If you could name one player at one point in the history of Liverpool whose sending off would produce the most hysterical reaction, Jordan Henderson in 2018 would be right at the top of the list. The Reds skipper was shown his marching orders for a stupid second yellow card at Watford on Saturday, leading...

Five Strikers That Would Suit Liverpool

It seems clear that Jürgen Klopp has a plan. In the last six to twelve months, Liverpool have toyed with a 4-2-3-1 system – the kind that the German used at Dortmund regularly. With the midfield stagnating in the 4-3-3 and Liverpool’s dazzling forwards looking starved of creativity, it makes sense to withdraw Roberto Firmino...

Jurgen Klopp & The Price For Style

There is no correct way to play football no matter how much we may hear the phrase “Play the right way” across the media. The uber-pragmatic style which epitomized the mid-noughties could not be further from the pressing dominant, possession styles of the modern era. Both Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp employ styles which don’t...

Observations as Liverpool Continue to put the Pressure on Man City

Liverpool surged to a 3-0 win against Watford courtesy of a strong second-half performance at Vicarage Road. The fine margins of football could’ve made it a very different result had the home side gained a penalty when the scores were level after Robertson appeared to bring down Will Hughes, but a growing telepathy between...

Key Stats As Reds Make It 33 points from 13 games

Liverpool turned in another solid away performance as they won 3-0 away at Watford. But what were the key stats from a tricky win at Vicarage Road, in which the Reds toiled for long spells but came good in the end? Clinical Reds Rely on Salah Again This was another far from vintage attacking performance...

Watford 0 Liverpool 3 – Reds keep pace with City

Three second-half goals saw a rampant Liverpool keep pace with League leaders Manchester City at the top of the Premier League following a tough encounter at Vicarage Road. Jurgen Klopp rang the changes once more with Dejan Lovren coming in for Joe Gomez, who reported an ankle niggle in training following his exploits in the...

Watford 0-3 Liverpool – Player Ratings as Reds see off plucky Hornets

Liverpool huffed and puffed in the first half, but they eventually beat Watford 3-0 at Vicarage Road to start off a big week in the most ideal way they could. Mo Salah opened the scoring in the 67th minute, and that opened the floodgates. A stunning free-kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold doubled the Reds' lead, before...

Watford v Liverpool Preview – Key Battles To Look Out For

The international break is over, and it's now time for Liverpool to head into the busiest and most crucial spell of the season. It begins with a trip to Vicarage Road to face Watford, who have been one of the surprise packages of the league this season. For once, the Reds didn't have too many...

PSG Test A Huge Opportunity For Liverpool

Liverpool’s away European form under Jürgen Klopp has been incredibly bang or bust. For every 5-0 win in Portugal there’s a 2-0 defeat in Belgrade. Whilst some of the best performances of Klopp’s tenure have been away from home in Europe, some of the worst have also come there. So far this season, the Reds...

Mane takes the money: Reaction to Sadio’s new deal

Just as we were all drifting off into a Thursday night daze, social media started buzzing with the news of Sadio Mane bringing an end to all the chatter about his contract situation by signing a new one. The Reds' wing wizard has put pen to paper on a brand spanking new deal that takes...

Shaqiri can emulate past ‘risks’ Sturridge and Coutinho

On current form, Xherdan Shaqiri is Liverpool's most in-form attacking player. The Swiss is yet to put a foot wrong for the Reds despite struggling to earn regular playing time, while his performances for Switzerland have been outstanding. He produced a match-winning display in his country's shock 5-2 win over Belgium on Sunday night, and has...

Appreciating Liverpool’s Future Captain

Remember when people said that £75 million was an exorbitant fee? Liverpool have gone from a notoriously shaky defence, one which is able to instil fear into even the most resilient of Liverpool fans when they conceded a corner, to one which instils fear into event the sharpest of strikers. And a lot of Liverpool’s surge...

Liverpool and the International Break: A Diary Of Nothing

Two weeks without a Liverpool game. Two whole weeks. It’s Day 8 and I’m really struggling. International breaks can be a necessary evil—you have to qualify for the World Cup or European Championship after all and those games have to be played at some point—but do we really have to have so many? What are we meant...

What Next for Divock Origi?

Liverpool have added quality in depth over the last season or two, making strides in their bid to turn into genuine Premier League title challengers. The arrivals of Naby Keita and Fabinho in the summer reflect the increasing desire of FSG to put their money where their mouth is, with the owners clearly seeing...

Can Liverpool top the table by January 1st?

With eight more fixtures to go before the new year, Liverpool currently sit in second place in the Premier League, two points behind Manchester City. We’re one of three teams still unbeaten after the first dozen games – Pep Guardiola’s side have only dropped four points whilst Chelsea have won eight and drawn four of...

Liverpool’s Progression Embodied By Those Left Behind

Liverpool have made undoubted progress over the last few years. From a team ridiculed for their defensive mishaps, often succumbing strong leads due to individual errors and a lack of authority, to one able to ride out tight 1-0 advantages with relative comfort, Jurgen Klopp has transformed the very foundations that made a hunt...

Liverpool’s Next Five Away Fixtures Could Define Their Season

With the international break thankfully almost at an end, attention starts turning back to the Premier League, and for Liverpool, that means a tricky away trip to Watford in their first game back. Jürgen Klopp has never hidden his disdain for international football, in particular, the Nations League, and so will be glad to have...

Klopp’s Kryptonite: His Own Stubbornness

Jurgen Klopp’s track record in regard to transfers speaks for itself. All of his transfers have been an unmitigated success (Loris Karius’ decline in the eyes of the football world can be put down to one terrible night at the office). The German's stubborn nature when identifying specific targets, whilst frustrating for fans and...

Have Liverpool Found Their Coutinho Replacement?

Disclaimer: no, Xherdan Shaqiri is not Phil Coutinho. However, it is rather satisfying seeing a new “Fab Four” strut their stuff. Much was made of Jürgen Klopp’s sanctioning of the sale of Phil Coutinho to Barcelona – he was integral to the precursory group stage that led to the Champions League final – and was affably...

Understated Fabinho Growing Into The Liverpool Shirt

Watching a game back is something I would urge any Liverpool supporter to do. Once you take the in-the-moment emotion out of it, dissecting the match with a more measured mind, you see things you missed, appreciate individuals more and may even realise that you have overrated the performance of others. On the first watch on...

Brexit Babes Boom in Value as January Approaches

Brexit!  And you thought you would be able to avoid politics in the warm, comfortable cocoon that is Premier League football.  Any small nudge to the freedom of movement principle could have a nuclear bomb sized impact on England’s top division.  Liverpool start a maximum of 5 UK born players for any given match...

Liverpool 2-0 Fulham: A Tactical Breakdown

After a horrible performance against Red Star Belgrade, Liverpool fans needed some catharsis. With Fulham on a five-match losing streak and due to play at Anfield, a win was the expectation. To deliver the win though, Klopp set Liverpool up with the 4-2-3-1 system, with Salah as the striker, Firmino at 10, and Shaqiri out...

If Henderson is the Solution, Then What is the Problem?

In the discussion about how Liverpool overcome the sterility in midfield that has affected performances over the course of the season and specifically in Belgrade, many have offered Jordan Henderson as the solution. Melissa Reddy brilliantly diagnosed Liverpool's problems. In elaborating a point on “midfield balance" she makes the following key points: Liverpool plays predictable football,...

The Story of a Minute: Liverpool 2 Fulham 0

Columnists and pundits rely on controversy. To them it is the lifeblood of half-time intervals and empty pages, awaiting words both spoken and printed. A handball, an offside, a disallowed goal. All meat and drink if the game is fairly run of the mill and you’ve nothing to talk about. This extends to this page. I’m...

Xherdan Shaqiri: £13 million of ever-growing importance

When Liverpool secured the services of 'The Alpine Messi', Xherdan Shaqiri, during the summer transfer window, his arrival on Merseyside was greeted with a mixture of scepticism and optimism. A player who has been a bit of nearly man for the duration of his career after spells with Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, before establishing...

Observations as Liverpool mark best ever tally from opening 12 games

Liverpool marched to a relatively routine 2-0 win against a labouring Fulham, regaining their spot at the top of the Premier League table with goals from Mohamed Salah and Xherdan Shaqiri. Once again, this wasn't a vintage performance from Klopp's side, with questions remaining about how the manager gets the very best out of his...

Liverpool 2-0 Fulham: Who was man of the match?

It wasn't the rout many would have hoped for given Fulham's near-historic defensive woes, but after the horrors of their trip to Belgrade, victory still brought sweet relief. In truth, Liverpool were happy to cruise into the international break once Mohamed Salah had fired them in front shortly before half-time, with Xherdan Shaqiri's subsequent strike...

Has Gomez Eliminated LFC’s Need For A Centre-Back?

One of the benefits of the transfer window ending before the season started is that you can draw a more precise delineation between the opinions at the end of the window and those opinions a few weeks later. In previous years, the form of Joe Gomez would have muddied the waters of opinion before...
