Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Liverpool’s Forgotten Man: Tiago Ilori

Liverpool fans got another piece of good news at the start of this current transfer window when it was reported that Aston Villa are thinking about terminating the loan deal they have in place for Liverpool's forgotten man Tiago Ilori. For me personally this is great news as when his loan to Aston Villa...

Illustrating Liverpool’s Pressing Vs West Ham United

We've been collecting Pressing Stats since 2013 on Anfield Index and after two record breaking performances from Liverpool I expected a heavy drop in this loss at Upton Park, I was wrong! Liverpool's pressing effort was actually very close to the game against Leicester City. We analyse the pressing stats and on-ball stats on our podcast...

Liverpool’s Biggest Hurdle in 2016 is Impatience

It’s easy to look at the United fans with their radically pre-emptive Mourinho scarves, and their Sharpie covered kitchen-towl signs, and to forget that Liverpool fans can be pretty stupid too. Jurgen Klopp alluded to one element of the idiocy, or at least childish impatience, in Reds fans, when he said of Liverpool’s inconsistent...

Liverpool FC’s Daytrippers and Anfield’s Atmosphere

They say that the atmosphere is a thing of the past these days at Anfield. That the famous twelfth man is no more. That fans in the terraces can no longer be bothered to sing or cheer the team on when their backs are against the wall. That Anfield is a silent stadium and...

What we learnt in Liverpool’s futile performance at West Ham

It is not how we expected to start the new year. A frustrating Liverpool performance saw West Ham finish as 2-0 victors to complete a Premier League double this season. With the early kick-off, the Reds had the chance to move up to fifth but if results go against us we could be as...

West Ham United 2 Liverpool 0: Player Ratings

Liverpool had a torrid start to 2016 as they produced a performance similar to the one against Watford. The Reds were second best in everything; be it passing, tackling, desire or invention. The level of desperation was quite clearly there to be seen as Dejan Lovren was seen taking free kicks. The lack of...

Running forward and why it seems to be harder than we think

Ask any football fan what they expect from their striker and the first point they will make is that they have to score goals. The best way for strikers to score goals is by making forward runs into the box so that they are closer to the goal when they receive the ball, giving...

Benteke, Goals and Missed Chances

Since his summer move to Liverpool Christian Benteke has been weighed down by the fee The Reds paid Aston Villa. Rightly or wrongly when you sign a striker for £32.5 million you have high expectations. I understand transfer fees don't always represent the quality of a player, the fee is decided by the selling...

Price Cut: Reduced Reds Defeat ASDA-Price-Allardyce

"Playing against a defensive position is just as bad as making love to a tree." - Jorge Valdano A couple of weeks ago I tweeted that, by beating Leicester and Sunderland, Liverpool could finish the year just nine points off first. The response was typical. I was met with groans of, "easier said than done", "this season, you...

Illustrating Liverpool’s Pressing Vs Sunderland

We've been collecting Pressing Stats since 2013 on Anfield Index and Liverpool's performance was a recording breaking one according to the numbers we collect! You can have a listen to the full analysis of the pressing stats on the podcast embedded below. There are also supporting heat map/pressing map combinations below so that you...

Comparing Joel Matip to the Liverpool defence

Schalke player Joel Matip has been linked with a move to Liverpool in the January transfer window in a cut price deal due to his contract coming to an end in June. You'd be forgiven for not being too clued up on Matip, when thinking about Schalke defenders it's usually Benedict Howedes and the now...

Liverpool’s January: Tricky Away Games Kick-Off New Year

With Liverpool finally able to put a fairly disappointing 2015 behind them, we're heading into a new year that's full of promise for Jürgen Klopp's Reds. With a new manager, a new style, and maybe even some new signings (if you believe the rumours), everything's in place for a fantastic start to 2015. Liverpool's January...

Observations from Liverpool’s win against Sunderland

Two consecutive 1-0 victories against Leicester and now Sunderland have seen Liverpool rise up to seventh in the table, level on points with Manchester United. The win on Wednesday night saw similarities to the win on boxing day; an unconvincing 1-0 victory. Benteke bagging the winner but missing a late sitter in both games,...

Marko Grujic and The Significance of Shirt Numbers

Marko Grujic. Up until a couple of weeks ago, the vast majority of Liverpool fans likely wouldn’t have heard of him. Yet now he’s the name on everyone’s lips, as his controversial move to the Reds gets ever closer to being signed, sealed and delivered. I say controversial, not because of the young mans reputation,...

The Klopp Mentality: Making the People Happy

In a football world often described as savage, unrelenting and uncompromising, it’s a pretty good feeling to watch a Jürgen Klopp interview. In such a harsh, embattled landscape where managers all strive to achieve excellence largely through one pre-determined template of how to act in front of the camera and on the touchline, Jürgen...

Time is the Best Remedy for Benteke’s Form

Christian Benteke has been subject to heavy criticism amongst the Liverpool fanbase in recent weeks, with some drawing parallels between his and Andy Carroll's fateful move to Liverpool. Yet in the league, Benteke has made 15 appearances, started on 10 occasions, and scored five, and even chipped in with one assist. In comparison, Luis Suarez...

Liverpool midfield dominance vs Leicester a sign of things to come

Eyes were widened and surprise stated as Liverpool’s lineup for the Leicester City game was confirmed, with Jurgen Klopp abandoning his usual 4-3-2-1 system since joining the Reds and matching up to the Foxes in a tactical sense with a 4-4-2. Pre-game (and, for some unfortunate watchers, in-game) chatter was about how Klopp was affording...

Sinclair and Co – Contracts Costing Liverpool Yet Again

From the moment Jean-Marc Bosman won his case which allowed players to move to clubs in different countries football has been ruled by the players. Players and agents collude with one another looking for that one big payday and it often means their current clubs either lose the player on a free transfer, have to...

Liverpool’s Rebuttal to Leicester’s Pressing/Marking

Taking down the Premier League’s high-flying leaders is no easy feat; Liverpool coming off a winless three game streak never helped the build up to the game either. The talks of the Riyad Mahrez-Jamie Vardy combo ripping through the Reds flooded social media after what a Troy Deeney-Idion Ighalo partnership did in Watford's 3-0 win...

Illustrating Liverpool’s Pressing on Vardy, Mahrez and Kante

Many have stated that Liverpool victory over Leicester City was down to the Foxes having a bad day at the office. I happen to disagree, Liverpool's pressing on the day was very impressive and the illustrations below will help explaining exactly how Liverpool went about their stifling Leicester at Anfield on Boxing Day. The images...

A Look at Lovren & Sakho: Can It Work?

There have been many shouts for Liverpool to make a big dip into the January transfer window and pull out some real quality during Jurgen Klopp’s first attempt to strengthen the team.  Several positions have been cited as “needed” in the immediate future, with a right-sided centre-back on the list for quite some time. But...

Liverpool 1 Leicester 0 – What Did We Learn?

Liverpool's three game run without a win was finally halted as Christian Benteke's goal gave the Reds a 1-0 win over the league leaders Leicester City. In truth, the scoreline could have been much more overwhelming in our favour, but our profligacy in front of goal meant that there were a few nails being bitten...

Liverpool FC 1 Leicester City 0 : Player Ratings

A far better performance from Liverpool ensured that they took all three points on a windy day at Anfield, becoming the first team to keep Leicester from scoring and condemning the foxes to only their second defeat this season. Sunderland await the Redmen next as the fixtures come in one after the other. Simon Mignolet...

Memorable Liverpool FC Boxing Day Games

I'm an advocate of changing the Premier League schedule so clubs have a mini winter break. I think it'll benefit the clubs in Europe and it'll benefit the league in the long term as you won't be blitzing the players and having them play in something silly like a game every 3 days...but, at...

Klopp at Work: Realism, Hope and the Deconstruction of LFC

The great American poet, Eminem, once said in his sweeping, modernist, self-biopic poem song, “Lose Yourself”: “Snap back to reality, oh, there goes gravity,” And for many Liverpool fans, that’s where we find ourselves this week. After floating in the ethereal clouds of what-could-be, following epic wins versus Chelsea, Man City and Southampton, we're now plummeting...

Liverpool: All I Want For Christmas Is…

Had some feedback recently on AI that articles should be more positive, well after last weekend's exploits being positive is going to be very difficult, after what can only be described as a turgid, error ridden team performance by the team, where in my opinion nobody wearing red came out with any credit. Trying to...

Interview with Serbian Reporter Regarding Liverpool Bound Marko Grujic

With so many questions hanging over the potential Marko Grujic transfer from Red Star Belgrade to Liverpool FC I decided to interview Serbian sports writer Nemenja Grbic (@Nemcy85) to see if he could clear a few things up. This was conducted before Marko himself told the Serbian paper Telegraf he was joining Liverpool earlier...

Quick Fix Klopp

Almost eleven, long weeks have passed (depending on when you are reading this) since the German messiah took over the helm at Liverpool Football Club. The answer to all our problems, the quick fix for Brendan Rodgers' mess and the saviour of Anfield. It all began so well. Performances rose quite a few notches...

Liverpool’s Strongest Team

We all know what Liverpool's strongest team is, well we all like to think we know what Liverpool's strongest team is anyways. If you go through the full squad, including those who are out on loan and those who are currently injured Liverpool have the potential to have one of the strongest starting elevens...

Liverpool FC Team Leaks and Attention Seekers

Football Twitter is like the animal kingdom. It's competitive as many accounts scrap for that top position as most reliable associated with the club they support. There are accounts that offer fan opinions, some that provide news and then there are those that are lucky enough to hear about club news before most and...
