Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Brendan Rodgers and The Transfer Committee | The Outgoings

Doubters. Something Brendan Rodgers has had to deal with throughout his brief period as Liverpool manager. Whether it be his credentials, his methods, his transfer signings, his bosses, or his vocabulary, there is nothing that has escaped the manager from ridicule. With particular regards to transfers, fans have spoken themselves to death in discussing who to...

Fabio Borini – Good, but good enough for Liverpool? | Stats Analysis

The Past I’d be lying if I said I knew a lot about Fabio Borini before he had been linked with Liverpool FC. The hype surrounding him prior to his reunion with Brendan Rodgers was quite unfounded and primarily based on video compilations of his best footballing moments. A section of the fans opined that...

Home & Away: Starring Philippe Coutinho | Stats Analysis

Philippe Coutinho’s display in the recent game away at Southampton was disappointing, but not unexpected. Since joining the club he’s put in this type of performance on numerous occasions, with the earliest example being a game against Chelsea at Anfield last season, when he was substituted at half time. A tweet from City Talk’s Jay...

Daniel Sturridge | Witness the Brendan Rodgers Effect

Daniel Sturridge was a promising youngster at Manchester City when he first made his name. He didn’t manage to fulfil his potential as he never really got to play in his desired position or some could argue his attitude was not right. Sturridge just wasn’t cutting it at Manchester City even though it was...

The Taming of Luis Suarez

Joe Allen Stars in Late Cameo vs Swansea

Joe Allen is a player in whom Brendan Rodgers has invested a lot. Whilst at Swansea, the Welshman was a mainstay of their Championship play-off winning side, and the diminutive midfielder’s performances brought lavish praise from his manager. ...while he is not at the same level, he is that Xavi or Iniesta type of player....

Liverpool FC: Putting Flesh on Your Dreams

Attention Liverpool Fans, It’s time to Support & Believe

Gerrard is the reason we’re conceding so many goals… No, Johnson is the reason we’re conceding so many goals… No, Agger is the issue… Nope, it’s definitely Jon Flanagan’s fault… It’s definitely Kolo Toure being useless isn’t it. That’s the reason… Just listen to yourselves for a moment. Liverpool won a seven goal thriller to...

I’m on the Rodgers 12 point plan to Redemption

Are you with me? We are 12 league games away from something remarkable. The door to the riches of the Champions League is firmly open to us, it’s beckoning us in like the hostess of our favourite bar or nightclub. We would be foolish not to take up the offer, after all, who knows when...

Simon Mignolet: A potential problem averted

Summer signing Simon Mignolet slotted straight into the Liverpool setup, and has been one of the key players for the Reds so far this season. For goalkeepers, they're usually a commonly-used scapegoat for a lot of mishaps that go wrong in a campaign, especially those chasing the top places. As mentioned previously, not being in the...

Reject, Rewards & Rodgers

Whilst I appreciate that the title may be somewhat provocative if you look through the current Liverpool team, you will see many players who, at one point or another have been classed as rejects. In fact, from the team that played Fulham in the last Barclays Premier League game then there are only 3...

Home Sick: Why Liverpool Are Less Dominant Away From Anfield

Liverpool are remaking Anfield into a house of horrors for their rivals, losing only once at home this season. However, the club's away performances have lacked the same sort of conviction at times, especially against lesser sides, and as a result, Liverpool have a subpar away record that keeps them off the top of...

Rodgers’ Eleven: The Premier League Heist

A short, tanned and toned Northern Irishman sits at his desk looking at the remaining fixtures in front of him. He picks up his red fiber tip pen, and crosses out the latest of victims to fall to his mighty team. "Can we do it?" he thinks to himself, tapping his foot off the...

Is the Smart Money on Liverpool?

Four, long years. Four years of Champions League football wilderness, starting with the capitulation of the Rafa regime, continuing with Hodgeball and the return of the King, and most recently, an investment in what is fast becoming a special managerial talent in Brendan Rodgers. I’m circumventing a key issue in those four years, of course –...

We’re Gonna Win The League

I have a stat for you… Liverpool, compared with the league table at the same stage in 2008/9, are actually closer to the top of the Premier League now than in that magnificent season. Cast your mind back to 08/09. It was, we thought, the time when most thought Liverpool would once again ascend to the...

Analysing Philippe Coutinho’s Masterclass vs Arsenal

After an all-action display of midfield dominance versus Everton, it’s fair to say that Philippe Coutinho underperformed in the following game against West Brom, so much so that many wanted him dropped for the game against Arsenal at home. Whilst he was largely anonymous at The Hawthorns he wasn't the only one, and the...

Liverpool’s Magical Attack vs Arsenal

Liverpool's attack is now being recognised as a complete and destroying movement. Although they are still at the heart, it's now not just the SAS who are being praised. As Liverpool power forward, everyone from the defensive midfielders forward are involved in how the Reds are just destroying the defences they come up against. The...

The Wool of Lime Street

Please note that this is a satirical short story, please read it with that in mind. “Seventy seven quid.” Gareth stared blankly at his train ticket lying in front of him, taunting him as he scanned the price over and over until it blurred into one blotch of ink. Lime Street return to Euston Station. Gareth knew...

West Brom 1 Liverpool 1 | Review and Match Stats

West Brom took points off yet another top of the table rival as Liverpool were held to a lacklustre 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns.
