SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Discussing Liverpool’s Left-Back Options This Summer

When the end of the year approaches, people come up with their wish lists for Christmas. That's exactly what the summer transfer window brings, too. Liverpool fans are desperately rattling their brains for their wish list of potential players that could line up for the club next season to challenge on four fronts. At the...

Why Klopp Should Sell Sakho

With Sakho's return to training at Melwood, and the Virgil Van Dijk saga seeming to offer no immediate solution to Liverpool's troubles at centre-back, Liverpool fans have found themselves considering whether Jürgen Klopp should backtrack on his decision to marginalise and sell Mamadou Sakho. For Sakho though, his time at Liverpool has been one that has...

What are Liverpool’s transfer requirements this summer?

There is a multitude of content available in relation to transfer rumours and deals this summer, whether they be prospective, completed or just idly speculated upon; but for the purposes of this article, I want you to forget potential target names and forget price tags. I know that is a difficult thing to do...

The Natural Solution to the Left-Back Problem

The transfer merry-go-round continues to spin into summer, and Liverpool continue to be linked with names both familiar and outlandish. One position that Klopp is reportedly keen to strengthen for the coming season is left-back, and we all know why. It's because James Milner is not a natural left-back. Right? Erm, Mr. Lahm, a...

Henderson & Can: Why Can’t Liverpool Supporters Rate Both?

There seems to be a bizarre, unwritten rule among much of the modern day Liverpool fanbase: it is a sin to rate both Jordan Henderson and Emre Can. Quite where this has stemmed from remains a mystery, but there seem to be two distinct camps, with very few rating the duo in roughly equal measure....

Virgil van Dijk is Worth £70m to Liverpool

Nonsense governs the football transfer market. Trying to find sense in the machinations of hyper rich football clubs and the pursuit of their transfer targets is puerile. There is no universal rule that applies to all clubs when it comes to valuing players; rather it is subjective and depends on the context of the...

One Year of Sadio Mané

It's been a year since Sadio Mané joined Liverpool, and in that time he has defied and surpassed all expectations. In his first season, the 25 year old scored 13 league goals and provided 5 assists in 26 games; we can only speculate how impressive his statistics would have been if not for Mané getting...

Why Isn’t Left-Back a Bigger Priority for Liverpool?

The most interesting thing about the transfer window so far is how little thought and effort is being put into the full-back areas at Liverpool. Last summer, a BBC poll indicated that only 7% of Liverpool fans were happy with the left-back situation, which was comfortably the unhappiest any fans were about any position...

Diouf and Gerrard: The Spat That Kept Spitting

"'Stevie G' was a very good player, people like him in Liverpool but he never did anything for his country. I am Mr. El Hadji Diouf, Mr. Senegal, but he is Mr. Liverpool and Senegal is bigger than Liverpool and he has to know that." Well, somebody let Diouf near a microphone again and he just...

Discussing Liverpool’s Alternative Options To Naby Keita

Having hit the Bundesliga by storm during the 2016/17 season, Naby Keita has attracted rife interest from across the globe. Jurgen Klopp has identified the midfielder as one of his priority targets this summer, but with RB Leipzig set to dig their heels in and rebuff any approach for their star man, Liverpool may...

Here’s To You Roberto Firmino

With Saturday marking Roberto Firmino's two year anniversary at the club, now is the perfect time to assess how the Brazilian has fared for Liverpool since his arrival. Roberto Firmino signed for Liverpool on the 24th June 2015 from 1899 Hoffenheim, in a fee around £29m. Firmino had enjoyed categorical success in Germany - in the...

Mbad Idea: Liverpool Already Have Their Number 9

Reports of Liverpool’s chase for Kylian Mbappe have lingered throughout May and June.  The Reds have been tracking him for quite a while and have not been put off by his rocketing notoriety or his price-tag.  Good for them.  Let’s be honest, if he were signed it would change perceptions among supporters and rivals...

How Should Klopp Use His Forwards?

With Mohamed Salah signed, attention naturally shifts to prospective signings in midfield and defence. However, with the Under-20 World Cup winner, Dominic Solanke, added to the ranks, Liverpool now have a large group of offensive players readying themselves for the coming season. How then should Klopp use and manage this group of very different,...

Can Coutinho start alongside Lallana In Midfield?

Liverpool's signing of Mohamed Salah, and Coutinho's success in a no.8 position at the end of the 2016-17 season is widely expected to herald Coutinho's move to the midfield permanently. However, for the coming season, providing Liverpool stick with a 4-3-3, let alone use the 4-4-2 diamond that featured against West Ham and Middlesborough...

Why Lallana should still be lining up in Liverpool’s midfield next season

With the imminent signing of Mo Salah it looks increasingly certain that Philippe Coutinho will be moved back into midfield next season to add some much needed creativity from deeper areas. The Reds found it hard to break down teams who played with a low block last season, therefore, having someone like Coutinho on...

Alternatives to Virgil van Dijk – Part 2

In Part 1, I analysed why Benedikt Höwedes of FC Schalke 04 should rank highly on Liverpool’s list of alternative centre-backs to Virgil van Dijk. Before reading this Part 2 article, please also see Part 1 for an overview of Liverpool’s defensive weaknesses and the profile of centre-back needed for Klopp’s current style and...

Loris Karius: Forgotten But Not Gone

Amid all the summer madness of transfer talk, as well as the constant praise for goalkeepers Simon Mignolet and Danny Ward, Loris Karius is now a player going completely under the radar. Having arrived as a devilishly handsome, highly-rated young German, it was no surprise to see him filling column inches and gaining immediate admirers...

Time For Firmino To Break The Curse Of Liverpool’s No.9 Shirt

There are a few iconic shirt numbers that you associate with Liverpool Football Club, with both No. 7 and No. 9 very much the standouts. James Milner currently occupies the former once worn majestically by Kenny Dalglish and Luis Suarez, much to the dismay of many who want a more glamorous player donning it, but the...

Scouting Andy Robertson – Hull’s Marauding Fullback

With a vast amount of commotion and furore going on, you’d be forgiven for thinking the transfer window lasted all of two weeks. But, in fact, it does last substantially longer than the eleven days it’s been open in England thus far, and as such, deals will likely materialise over the coming month from...

How Will Mohamed Salah Fare at Liverpool?

In the most recent edition of the Gags Tandon Show, Gabriele Marcotti, from both ESPN and The Times, featured as the guest: profiling Mohamed Salah and discussing potential concerns that Liverpool fans may have. For many Liverpool fans, their main concern is why Mohamed Salah, a player that could not establish himself at Chelsea is...

Welcome to Liverpool: Mohamed Salah

Liverpool have officially completed the signing of Mohamed Salah from Roma. The Egyptian international, who registered 15 goals and 11 assists last season for the Giallorossi, joins Liverpool for a fee believed to be £34m before add ons, after back and forth negotiations between the two clubs and will be wearing the number 11 shirt previously...

What should Liverpool fans expect from Mohamed Salah?

Securing a top-four finish last season represented real progress for Liverpool, but the Reds’ inability to sustain a title challenge highlighted the need for more quality to be added to their squad. Step forward Mohamed Salah, with the lightning-fast Egyptian international winger arriving at Anfield for the princely sum of £34m and looking to show...

Do Liverpool need a new striker?

The 2016/17 season was, broadly speaking, a successful one. Attaining Champions League football was the bare minimum for a 'successful season', but under Klopp's leadership, the team did so. In the process, Liverpool scored 78 goals in the league, at an average of just over two per game. Coutinho and Mané both scored 13...

Crucial Summer Ahead for Sheyi Ojo

Liverpool youngster Sheyi Ojo is set for a defining summer after undergoing a disappointing 2016/17 campaign that saw him fail to establish himself under Jurgen Klopp. Breaking through the ranks in 2015/16, Ojo has since drifted between Liverpool’s Under-23's and the first team setup – though predominantly in terms of training rather than appearances. Despite lots...

The quest for a new defender

Liverpool have some stunning players in their team at the moment. From Phillippe Coutinho terrifying defenders and midfielders alike to Sadio Mane outstripping pretty much anyone in front of him, their front 5 could easily be part of a title challenging team. Although Klopp has achieved high finishes, a Europa League final appearance and...

Why Liverpool FC Shouldn’t Get Shirty About Salah

A very tentative welcome to Mohamed Salah then. At the time of writing the Egyptian has all-but signed a four year contract for the Reds and I know we’ve been here before, but this could actually be a proper signing. We’ve made a bid and everything. Sports betting sites such as Fortuna have been confident for...

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Would Be A Shrewd Piece of Business

With Arsenal stalling on a new deal for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Liverpool are among a number of clubs linked with a summer move. That’s caused somewhat of a stir from the fan-base, with the reaction varying from apprehension to excitement. If the Ox decides to seek pastures new, Netbet have Liverpool as the favourites to land the...

Silence at Anfield

It's all gone eerily quiet around Anfield. Not long ago the mood was euphoric; Liverpool had secured Champions League football, and were heading the race to sign Van Dijk. Rather uncharacteristically for Klopp's Liverpool, the news regarding Van Dijk was out in the open, before the player had put pen to paper, or even...

Why a Deal for Oxlade-Chamberlain Doesn’t Add Up

The link between Liverpool and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is one that has stuck around, despite Jürgen Klopp himself denying it, and it’s one that has created a lot of debate amongst Liverpool supporters. Unlike Salah, Van Dijk or Lacazette, who all were almost universally hyped up as soon as the link was made, reactions to...

Liverpool’s Transfer Window: As One Door Opens…

Much of the focus of the summer – which is still only weeks old, it should be said – for fans of any club, is the possibility and speculation of the transfer window. We’re all anxious to see who we can get through the door and onto the pitch for next season’s inevitable League...
