Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Why Man United Are The Stuff Of Nightmares For A Southern Red

January 24th, 1999. It’s a Sunday afternoon that still fills me with horror, and always will. I was turning 12 years of age the following day, and with Sky Sports still not a part of my household, my Dad took me to the pub to watch Liverpool’s FA Cup fourth round clash with Man United,...

The Running Man – Adam Lallana

While fatigue will certainly have taken its toll on several Premier League teams during the gruelling Christmas fixtures, one man seems completely unaffected by it all...one Adam Lallana. The England international covered a total of 13.22km in the 2-2 draw with Sunderland, recording 12.88km in the win against Manchester City just two days before. Both...

Lucas Leaver?

Earlier today, I wrote for the Latest News section about the divisive figure that is Alberto Moreno but the Spaniard is a mere amateur at dangerously dividing the fan base in comparison with the focus of this evening's scribbles - Lucas Leiva. The affable Brazilian will always have his fans because he is patently a...

Moreno Wants A Trophy

Alberto Moreno is one of those players whose name is guaranteed to elicit a reaction whenever it is mentioned wherever supporters gather to discuss the Redmen. Those discussions are likely to be characterised by wild oscillation between two polar positions. You see, people tend to either love or loathe the Spaniard's presence in Liverpool's starting...

No Mane – Can We Cope?

Liverpool have enjoyed an impressive season so far and Sadio Mane has been at the heart of it. Few could have envisioned the magnitude of his impact when he completed a £30million summer switch from Southampton. All the questions that were initially raised about the investment have been well and truly answered, with the forward...

EFL Cup Semi-Final Preview: Reds Look to Bounce Back

It has not been the best start to 2017 for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool. In the 2 games that the Reds have played, they have had two draws. The first one - a 2-2 stalemate at Sunderland - might be excusable, given that it kicked off less than 48 hours after a taxing game against...

Ojo Reckons Young Reds Will Be Fine

Jürgen Klopp has just been telling the assembled hacks that Philippe Coutinho is likely to have some minutes against Southampton and that Joel Matip is close to a return and, to be entirely honest, the world seems like a better place. I'm thinking especially of those poor damaged souls I referred to in this morning's...

Klopp Content With The Kids

If we're all completely honest with ourselves, yesterday's 3rd round FA Cup match against Plymouth at Anfield was everything one would expect to emerge from the disorientating fug of the post-Christmas period. It was the Redmen, but it wasn't really. It was a competitive match, but it wasn't really. Jürgen Klopp was clearly on the touchline and yet...

Jurgen Klopp Must Prioritise Man Utd Over the Southampton Clash

Liverpool’s relentless schedule shows no sign of slowing up, and we now approach another season-defining spell in the Reds’ season. Having conquered the festive period in impressive fashion - I’m willing to fight anyone who moans about 13 points from a possible 15, just because Liverpool drew with Sunderland - it’s now time for Jurgen...

Liverpool’s Lost Talent XI : 2012-2016

Much has been said about Brendan Rodgers' time at Anfield. He was often lauded for his development of talent, both by the press and by himself. This week's news that Tiago Ilori is likely to move on to Reading   had me thinking, how much talent did the Northern Irishman waste or ignore during...

Observations from Liverpool’s draw against Plymouth Argyle

A disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Plymouth means the Reds have a tricky replay to contend with in amongst an already difficult month of January. It's something they could have done without but it's our own doing after not showing enough class to finish off the League Two outfit. Liverpool were utterly dominant but...

VIDEO: Nina Kauser Show – Cup Competitions Vs The League

The Nina Kauser show on YouTube is back! After my debut episode on Anfield Index TV last week I am back with another interesting question for my awesome Twitter followers! This time I asked: You can watch the video above! There were some really interesting responses and I go through them as well as give my own take on the question....

Liverpool vs Plymouth Preview: Up for the Cup?

Liverpool's quest for their eighth FA Cup trophy, and a first since 2006, begins on Sunday afternoon as the Reds host League Two Plymouth Argyle at Anfield. It's the classic David vs Goliath clash at Anfield, and as we've seen before on numerous occasions, anything can happen in the cup. However, Jürgen Klopp's side will...

Klopp is the best manager to create attacking teams

“Maybe Klopp is the best manager in the world at creating teams who attack the back four”. High praise indeed. When you consider it came from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, that’s a monumentally positive review. The serially successful Spaniard was a treble winner in his first season with Barcelona. His Catalan side once averaged 3...

Gomez Back On Klopp’s Radar

October 2015. That's when Joe Gomez last featured for Liverpool's senior side. October 2015, when, on England U23 duty, the promising then 19 year old suffered serious injury and began a very long journey back to recovery. The last few appearances he had made before getting crocked had perhaps removed a little of the...

Klopp on Karius, Sturridge and Coutinho

Last night I watched Dinosaur 13, the heart wrenching tale of the world's most impressive Tyrannosaurus Rex discovery. Sue, that's what they called her, was subsequently impounded by the FBI for dubious reasons and remained in storage for years, much to the chagrin of the hapless paleontologists who'd quite literally unearthed her. Now it...

Analysing Emre Can’s Performance Against Sunderland

The disappointing 2-2 draw against Sunderland was the first Premier League match Liverpool have been without Jordan Henderson all season. The captain has been a bit of a divisive figure amongst fans since Jurgen Klopp moved him to a slightly more withdrawn role, which has seen him operate as a number 6. He's expected...

Liverpool FC: Let’s See How Far We’ve Come

Perspective is often the rarest of commodities in football. Swept up in the bustling action of the season, results are often what matter the most. The mood of a fanbase is determined by the way their team is playing, and more importantly, whether or not they won their last three games. Winning three in a...

Firmino Pledges Allegiance

I have a theory that you can identify what kind of a Liverpool fan you are and, by extrapolation, what kind of human you are, based on your current attitude to Roberto Firmino. You see, some people are judgers. It's what they do. (I'm not judging them for it) They feel possessed of some...

Klavan Can’t Get No Satisfaction

The most disappointing thing about not being active on social media is the fact that all of my hideous puns stay in my own battered brain pan, torturing me with their awfulness. In times past, I'd simply spew these abominations onto my Twitter timeline and I was free of them - a problem shared...

Sunderland 2 Liverpool 2 – I’m Furious With You All!

Heads have gone. Absolutely gone. Liverpool drew 2-2 with one of the worst sides in recent Premiership history and the people are furious. Come full time, Twitter and Facebook became a modern day version of George Orwell’s Two Minute Hate. ‘How typical of us to beat City and then not beat a Moyes side!’ ‘Good...

Steven Caulker, Liverpool Legend

On a recent episode of the In Focus podcast on Anfield Index, host Jon Buscall and guest Harinder Singh discussed and debated the concept of a Liverpool legend: what it took to be a legend, which players deserve the honour, and why some fell just short. It was difficult not to listen and be...

Flanagan Back To Anfield?

This is the time of year that makes idiots of us all, as we speculate wildly about new recruits arriving to L4. Rarely has there been a transfer window where the club's need has been so great but the fact that nobody really knows anything will ensure at least four more weeks of wild...

Mignolet is Predictably Calm

I want you to prepare yourself, dear reader, because it's time for Simon Mignolet to speak and, following his recent chicken kebab revelations, literally anything could happen here. Although it probably won't, because Simon is a very nice chap and, if we're honest, a little, well, dull. His take on the set-back at Sunderland...

Tactical Analysis: Liverpool dominate the ball but can’t break down Sunderland

The festive football season in England is one of the games traditions stretching back as far as most of us can remember. Watching matches or highlights packages every few days are a football fans dream and the fact that most other major leagues are on a winter break means that English football is truly...

How the Liverpool press Nullified Manchester City

The buzzword surrounding Jurgen Klopp's appointment as Liverpool manger in October 2015 was pressing. Gegenpress this, Gegenpress that, counter-press them here and counter-press them there. Basically, Klopp was supposed to turn up and blitz the Premier League with his high pressing, all action, heavy metal football. When it transpired that this wasn't going to...

Lovren Tired But Upbeat

Putting a brave face on a crushing disappointment is never an easy task. Just a few days ago I grimaced and heroically mumbled my gratitude, despite a growing darkness in my heart, as my mother proffered her Christmas present of the same gloves and pyjamas that I have not used or wanted every year...

Managing Expectations: Klopp and Moyes on Yesterday’s Result

Well, that wasn’t very pleasant now, was it? The spirit-flattening result, the loss of precious points, the inevitable Daniel Sturridge injury and the inspired opposition goalkeeper meant we had the perfect LFC Bullshit Bingo card. However, whilst a degree of irritation and perhaps even a modicum of irrational rage were both fair reactions, almost...

Expect More Coaching Than Chequebook from Liverpool in January

January has arrived, which means another transfer window and Liverpool being the subject of multiple links that stretch the imagination. It is click-bait season for certain sections of the media and it serves to feed the frenzy of some fans, as they piece together a Liverpool XI based on players that the tabloids picked out of...

Go and get… Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Jurgen Klopp has been tight lipped and dismissive of possible January additions, but a raid on Arsenal could see a Liverpool title charge gain further momentum. Option Despite mixed opinions of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, his acquisition into the current squad would be a boost of much needed resources. In an attacking sense, Klopp is in need of signings...
