Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Restoring Liverpool’s Identity

Make Us Dream Again “Why do you care so much? It’s just a game. You can’t let it affect your life like that.” They’ll never understand. We’re a tricky bunch, us. Frivolous and fickle, temperamental and volatile. We want success, as all humans do; we invest hours and hours of our lives into it, in fact, but...

Injuries Could Temporarily Solve Our Striker Puzzle

Daniel Sturridge returned to Liverpool’s ranks against Norwich as a man under pressure. In fact, many Liverpool fans had pinned the potential successes of our season all on him, just as they had done last year with sad consequences. Liverpool’s squad for 2015/16 has been bolstered though by the incoming Benteke, Ings and Origi,...

Liverpool v Aston Villa Preview | Predicted Line-Ups

A crutch for Liverpool over the course of the past few seasons, Aston Villa return to Anfield without Christian Benteke.  Of course, Liverpool won’t have access to the big centre forward either, who is out for the next two fixtures with a hamstring injury.  Villa are back at home in 17th place, just above the...

Shaky Simon Mignolet Reverts To Nervous Performances

“Simon, are you sometimes over-thinking stuff?” Those were the words uttered by Mrs Mignolet last season as she attempted to resolve her then-fiancé’s form. Sure enough, after his wife’s inspirational chat, Mr Mignolet’s displays improved. The once erratic goalkeeper went back to basics and looked a different player in the second half of the season. But...

Brendan Rodgers, FSG and Missed Opportunities

Liverpool are in limbo. No matter what side of the fence you sit on when it comes to Brendan Rodgers you can't bury your head deep enough in the sand to not see that the club is currently in no man's land. There's no identity. There's no passion, from both players and staff. There's no...

A No-Win Situation For Brendan Rodgers

"Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their own minds." Franklin Roosevelt "Win a no-win situation by rewriting the rules." Harvey Spector, Suits In medieval times, folk had altogether different notions of what constituted a bad person. With predictable misogyny, it was often the ladies who came off the worst, what with that era's unsettling...

Pepijn Lijnders – The Managerial Wildcard?

"Keep your friends close but your enemies closer." I recently read an article on this site by the talented Rory Greenfield. It was a piece about why Jurgen Klopp was the sole candidate to take over as Liverpool FC manager if Brendan Rodgers were to leave. He talks about his playing style and what he'd...

The Top 16 ex-Liverpool Players in the Media

I have ranked the top 16 ex-Liverpool players in the media. In fact, I could only think of 16, so it could also be considered a list of the worst - there is quite a range of quality! Ex-players are eligible if they are - or will be - employed at some point in the media...

Back To The Future

When forced to abandon something one loves for a while, there are clear stages of grieving for that lost object of affection. Initially the pain is sharp, like that of a parent whose only child has just flown the nest. You battle the overwhelming impulse to reunite, interfere, intercede. Eventually, however, the severity of...

Dear Brendan….

Dear Brendan, Firstly, on behalf of thousands and thousands of Liverpool Football Club supporters from every corner of the globe we call home, I sincerely thank you for allowing us to dream again after years of frustration. You had allowed us to dream about lifting the Premier League trophy 18 months back. And today, you're...

A Tactical Look at the 3-4-1-2 Formation Against Norwich

Brendan Rodgers rolled out yet another tweaked formation against Norwich. Formations are just a template on paper, a team can be as fluid or as structured as it likes depending on the instructions the manager gives. The Liverpool formation against Norwich could've been viewed as 352 or 3412 depending on when Liverpool had possession...

It Was The Worst Of Times, It Was The Worst Of Times

This is going to be awkward. If one thing has become apparent over the last week or so it is that you can’t sit on a fence anymore. You’re either in one camp or the other and there’s little to be gained from the middle ground. If you stand up and shout for more time...

Liverpool 1-1 Norwich – Tactical Analysis

Lineup Rodgers made four changes to the team that had played in the disappointing performance at Old Trafford. Firmino, Ings, Lovren and Gomez dropped out, Sakho, Moreno, Sturridge and Coutinho came in. Coutinho was the obvious change, coming back from his one match suspension but the other three were all slight surprises in one way...

Brendan Rodgers – Foolish or Brave?

When Liverpool's line up was announced for their match at home to Norwich, Twitter could be described as being excitedly cautious. Every single Liverpool fan had the same questions - Is the decision to start Daniel Sturridge stupid or brave from Brendan Rodgers? Was it right to change an entire system? Was it a...

Five Observations from Liverpool vs Norwich

Whilst watching this game against Norwich, I couldn't help but feel a little bit of sadness and sickness as the last number of times we played Norwich, Luis Suarez ran the show. Reminiscence of a greater, more fun Liverpool did not make for a pretty Sunday afternoon, as I laid back and watched highlights...

Liverpool FC 1 Norwich City 1 – Player Ratings

Liverpool were held to a frustrating draw at home as Norwich never stopped trying and took away their share of spoils. Irrespective of that, there were a few encouraging performances for the home side, as Liverpool exhibited some bit of attacking nous which has been missing since the beginning of the season. Simon Mignolet - 6 Simon...

Mamadou Sakho – Laying the Foundations

A friend recently asked if I had a monthly reminder on my phone to put a tweet out about Sakho only having x amount of months left on his current deal. Sad to say I had to cancel that reminder now. Myself and many more Liverpool fans got their wish on Friday when it was...

Jürgen Klopp: The Sole Candidate

As Brendan Rodgers' tenure as Liverpool manager edges towards an unsavoury climax, I look to the man on every supporters' lips and why he'd make the ideal replacement. Should the Liverpool job be made available, I expect it will be highly coveted and sought after. FSG, despite recent criticisms on decision making, are extremely generous...

Liverpool v Norwich Preview | Predicted Line-Ups & Stats

This is a great time for either team to be playing the other.  For Liverpool, the weekend brings a struggling-to-survive, newly-promoted Norwich that hasn’t quite got their feet off the ground.  The Canaries have taken down Sunderland and Bournemouth, but neither team is outside the realm of relegation fodder.  The Reds will feel more...

Brendan Rodgers: Presenting the Facts

For the dwindling number of Liverpool supporters who still had faith in Brendan Rodgers or were still willing to give him another chance this season, it seems the timid defeat away to Manchester United was the straw that broke the camel’s back. His backing amongst the fan base is now in Roy Hodgson territory. There...

The Importance of Jordan Henderson to Liverpool

It’s often said that you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. That statement will certainly ring true with Brendan Rodgers, who is likely to be without his captain Jordan Henderson for a while after the midfielder travelled stateside to seek assistance with a heel injury. Liverpool’s captain has already missed three games...

How Seriously Should Liverpool FC take the Cup Competitions?

Before I answer the question of how seriously Liverpool Football Club should take the cup competitions, I think it is important to first do something that Liverpool fans are famous for: talk about our history; it is vital to understand the philosophies that this great club was built on. Going back to, in my opinion,...

Divock Origi – It’s Time To Give Him A Chance

Five Games in to the season and there are already calls for Rodgers head. 3 goals from 5 games is poor, however when you see that Liverpool have scored 2 or more goals in only 6 league games since January 2015, there is a deeper problem. The lack of creativity and general naivety from...

Manchester United vs Liverpool: The Autopsy

At the start of the season I thought I'd do a weekly tactical piece on the previous game. Primarily looking at the attack and how Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino were bedding in with their new teammates. The United game was horrific to watch and although I tried I couldn't really find anything tactically to...

Where has Liverpool’s fight gone?

May, 2005, 49 minutes past 11 was the first time in my life I cried at a game of football on television. Being 7 years old, it was the first time I was of conscious mind when my beloved Liverpool got their hands on some silverware, and better yet, the 5th European Cup. Doesn’t...

Bordeaux Sequence – Previewing Liverpool’s Europa Opponents

Liverpool travel to Bordeaux this Thursday on the back of one of the most uninspiring derby defeats in recent memory. Brendan Rodgers’ men will be looking to add some spark to what has been a flat start to the season, but wily Willy Sagnol’s side will be looking to pile further misery onto The Reds...

Derby Disaster: What Next for Rodgers and Liverpool?

After watching the game on Saturday, many are wondering what next? Where does Liverpool go from there and specifically, where does Brendan Rodgers do now? Many a Rodgers fan has seen their faith rocked by Liverpool's recent performances. Twitter erupted with anger and disappointed. Hordes have heaped themselves on the 'Rodgers Out' campaign after such...

Brendan Rodgers: “What are you doing?”

Stood in the middle of a bar in Huddersfield. United fans surrounding me, but my Liverbird proudly making it’s presence felt, or more putting on a brave face as I begin to believe a comeback was on the cards for a split second. Christian Benteke’s over head kick momentarily stunned the Mancs, maybe they...

FSG: The Caretakers Role coming to an end?

A desolate house gives off a bad first impression. You see the exterior and it's judged purely on that. You don't see what's beneath the cod web and boarded up windows. You look at the rickety, rotted beams that barely keep the house standing and think it's just been poorly looked after. Set foot on...

Emre Can, Young Foreign Players and the Blame Game

On September 4, 2015 Emre Can made his debut for the German national team. It is not often you have a young Liverpool player make his debut for the World Champions. So the rarity that this is calls for celebrations by all fans. Instead I found myself reflecting on a tweet of some days...
