Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Scouser Tommies: FIGHT NOT FLIGHT

Another week, another pair of defeats and no sign of it coming to an end any time soon. On this week’s Scouser Tommies Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are frustrated with what is fast becoming a serious crisis. Five months after parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool, why are Arne Slot and his players making it look like it never happened? Defeats against Brentford and Palace, six goals conceded across the two games, out of the cup, 7th in the league, Anfield miserable and not just because of the biblical rain swirling down onto the pitch. Was it right to play the kids in the League Cup, to guarantee going out and leave some room in the calendar for rest? Or was this the one time to go big so early in this competition, stop the slide? Playing the kids made it easier to come up with an excuse, but is it time to stop sharing excuses and start coming up with answers? There isn’t just one big problem with Liverpool right now, It’s a multitude of smaller ones and so many of them feel avoidable. And so many have responsibility for that, even if all eyes are on the one man who has to try and explain all these defeats to fans through the media. Words can be powerful and the hosts are worried about how much damage some words, unintentionally, might just be doing. One example of those problems the hosts point to is just how much the Reds are missing their last No.7 - his enthusiasm, his determination, his ability to get fans on their feet as he fights for a win. Where is the fight now? And where is the plan? The current No.7 is a different kind of player, expected to play a very different role, but has anyone worked out what that is? That No.7 shirt is huge at this club, worn by arguably the greatest man in Liverpool FC history; a player, a manager, a part of the very fabric of this club. Kenny Dalglish of course, who has a movie coming out next week all about his life and especially his time at Anfield. The movie shows The King’s ability to balance self belief and confidence with his humility and trademark humour, and gives viewers a real insight into the philosophy that this club is rooted in. The hosts discuss how much the current incumbent of one of the biggest jobs in world football, and his charges, could learn from the great man and his career. Watching the movie would be a good start, but maybe they could do with some one on ones. The hosts aren’t saying Arne should go and get coaching hints from The King, or that players should get lessons in how to defend set pieces from him, but there is so much the great man could talk to them about that might just inspire them, might just help him, might just see them through the most pressure some of them have ever been under. And there are other legends who could offer insight that isn’t in the coaching manuals. Also in this week’s episode Jim and Jay look at the idea of using a back three - as seen in the League Cup - and look at the options for who could make up that three if it was transferred to the big games. What might it bring, what would it take away, would there be potential to give decent service to the front men the club now has? Would it give the Reds the stability needed to get out of this rut? Huge games lie in front of the Champions now, starting with Aston Villa and followed in rapid succession by Real Madrid and then Manchester City, before another international break arrives to interrupt it all. Do Liverpool need tweaks or upheaval, and what might a credible “stop the bleeding” plan actually look like? As always, no matter how bad it gets for us, our old mates from down by the river always manage to find a way to cheer us up. Not that they mean to. Learn more about your ad choices. Memoirs of a Brendan Rodgers Disciple

August 31st 2014 I knew it. I bloody well knew it! “Brendan Rodgers relied on Luis Suarez for the success of last season” they said. HA! Be the Lord, the Reds were as good as last year today. Liverpool went to White Hart Lane and told Tottenham “we are just better than you lot.” And...

A Curious Case of Deja Vu for Liverpool FC

I'm sure many of you have been in a similar situation. You've been planning this moment for a while, you've ran through the situation in your head a vast amount of times and you're bordering on arrogance at how sure you are it'll be a success. You don't plan for a mishap, why would...

Jordon Ibe – The Future of Liverpool

Liverpool are renowned for generating a variety of prolific, promising young players either by purchasing them for extremely low prices or through the academy. As of late, a young player that has caught the eye of Brendan Rodgers and most Liverpool fans is Jordon Ibe, an English 19 year old who is well known...

Improving Liverpool’s First Team With Minimum Expense: Part Two

If you missed part one of this series you can find it here where I talk about the defence and goalkeeper: Improving Liverpool's First Team With Minimum Expense Part 1. In this part I look at the defence and strikers. Victor Wanyama - Defensive Midfielder - Southampton If you follow me on Twitter or have listened...

The Liverpool Triumvirate | Overview of Sakho, Can, Skrtel et al

With the exception of relegation battlers, you would be hard-pressed to find a defence in the league that has come under the same level of scrutiny as Liverpool. Whether it’s Neville or Carragher on a Monday night, or the ingenious Alan Shearer perceptively offering some of his innovative, ever-insightful though perpetually crap “analysis” on...

Everton v Liverpool | Merseyside Derby Special

Derby day.  What more could we ask for at this point?  Liverpool haven’t lost in 2015, and Everton won their first game since mid-December this past weekend. True, it was Crystal Palace, but a resurgent Palace nonetheless (insert sarcastic smirk here). Last time out, both sides were in a poor run of form and...

Gerrard: Young and Red | 700 Up for Captain Fantastic

A young Steven Gerrard charged around the football pitch, aged 12, showing strength and ability beyond his years under the guidance of Tim Johnson with the Liverpool U14's academy team. Now, 16 years since his Liverpool senior debut and Gerrard boasts one of English football’s greatest careers after achieving 700 appearances for the Reds. Speaking...

Coutinho compared to Kroos and Modric

It's not the first time Brendan has likened his player to a superstar. Remember his comments on Joe Allen being the next Xavi? Highly debatable regardless of what team you support. But, is Brendan right in saying that Coutinho could be as good as Kroos and Modric? The comments were made after the Brazilian...

Welcomed Distractions – Emre Can

Ha remember that summer Liverpool paid £20 million for Dejan Lovren. What a waste of money, ey? The same summer they spent close to £25 million on Adam Lallana and another £16 million on Mario Balotelli. Three big signings, none have hit the ground running. What a way to waste the Suarez money. All...

Improving Liverpool’s First Team With Minimum Expense: Part One

Liverpool, and the rest of the English footballing community, have just endured one of the most boring transfer windows ever. Nothing really happened, nobody was even slightly interested in the usual tabloid talk involving player rumours and silly price tags and Liverpool signed nobody - discounting the recalling of Jordon Ibe from his loan...

Liverpool FC | Go Fourth and Qualify!

The Monday after another three point display at for Brendan Rodgers's Liverpool, and this week fans of the Mersey Reds have got more than a Premier League victory to celebrate. Seemingly, at times, built from crystal, Daniel Sturridge's goalscoring return made it abundantly clear to the home crowd, and millions of football fans worldwide,...

Bolton v Liverpool | FA Cup Fourth Round Replay

After a good win and a fantastic Sturridge rebirth at Anfield, we travel to Macron Stadium to take on Bolton.  At stake: advancing to the fifth round and a tie at Selhurst Park.  The primary question is: does anyone in the side really care?  For the sake of Gerrard’s final year at Liverpool, I’d...

Pro Evolution: Where Next For Liverpool’s Tactics?

Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford in December was a perfect illustration of the team’s regression this season. It was a direct reversal of the result in the same fixture last March, when a trident of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, and Raheem Sterling, saw Liverpool become an unstoppable attacking force. If the club could take...

Six Up and Coming Stars to Emerge from the Melwood Youth Academy

Liverpool FC boasts one of the strongest youth systems in world football. In contrast to recent polls conducted by Bleacher Report, Givemesport.com, amongst others, who seem to have disregarded the Merseyside club entirely and placed them towards the bottom end of the pile, players such as Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, and Raheem Sterling demonstrate...

Liverpool 2 West Ham 0 – Talking Points: Return of the Dancing Man

The win at Anfield was as far away as you could have got from the disappointment at Upton Park in the reverse fixture in September. Liverpool dominated and took their chances, while West Ham struggled to impose their own unique brand of physicality on the game and create openings. In September, Liverpool were effectively bulldozed by...

Coutinho Stepping Up As The Playmaker

We've all seen the flashes of brilliance which Philippe Coutinho can bring to a side. But since he arrived, the first few couple of seasons we didn't see his full potential - this year, however, we're starting to see the glimpses of a superstar. Coming to Liverpool as a youngster, it's very rare that you...

Danny Ings Isn’t That Offensive

The news broke last night on Twitter. Mass hysteria, a fan base divided (no change there then) and for once it wasn't about the defensive midfielder subject, instead it was about a potential deal to bring Burnley Striker Danny Ings to Anfield, the meltdown that followed was borderline apocalyptic. Granted, It is in the...

Liverpool v West Ham | Premier League Preview

After an abysmal showing at Boleyn Park, the Reds face West Ham at Anfield Saturday evening. We’ve got a different story to tell this time out concerning form; back in the “wish we could forget it” month of September, Liverpool registered no Premier League wins. In fact, the only 3 points taken from that...

The Importance of Sturridge’s Return

Daniel Sturridge, perhaps Liverpool's best striker, has returned to regular first team training after being injured for almost five months with thigh and calf problems. Since Sturridge's injury Liverpool have been faced with an agonisingly painful shortage of goals and with his return, the fans are expecting that factor to be eliminated. Sturridge was set...

Pick Yourselves Up Liverpool…. We Go Again!

Gutted. That is the only word for it after our defeat at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool went toe to toe with Chelsea who were filled with world superstars and arguably the better side did not progress to the final at Wembley. Whilst fans will be rightfully proud of the desire and fight shown by the...

Brendan Rodgers – Perspective

Many Reds could be forgiven for believing Liverpool could actually go on to win the league last season. The cluster of Luis Suarez’s magical spectacle, Raheem Sterling’s rise to prominence and Daniel Sturridge finishing behind only the former as the league’s top goal-scorer. This season in contrast has been…well, slightly different. It’s the latter...

Cup-Tied or Hamstrung? | Liverpool FC

The Magic of the (FA) Cup. We all love a good cup tie, don't we? Every fan, surely, must want to see their team go on a great cup run, musn't they? I mean, winning breeds winning; it's a great way to gather momentum; the players just want to get out there and play;...

Wide Box to Box Midfielder | Crucial To Liverpool

The term box to box is used to describe a midfielder who has no specialist role, they're primarily an engine tasked with helping both sides of the teams' game. They're also more commonly found in the centre of the pitch, but could the change of formation to the 3421 formation mean Liverpool could deploy...

Chelsea v Liverpool | Capital One Cup Semi-Final Second Leg

“Final ball, finish it off.  Final ball, finish it off.”  I found myself repeating this phrase over and over again during the last two cup clashes of the past week.  To be fair, we’ve all been saying it pretty consistently over the course of the season, but never more so than against Chelsea and...

One Week Remaining: Do We Need A Striker?

Paramount. Critical. Fundamental. A Necessity. Each one, and more, of these many adjectives were used to describe Liverpool's desperate need for a striker following the sale of ex-icon Luis Suarez in the summer. The 75 million pound price agreed may be a tad lower than what Reds' fans were anticipating, however we could not afford to bite off...

FA Cup Fourth Round Preview: Liverpool vs Bolton

A fourth round cup tie against Championship side Bolton Wanderers might feel favourable at the moment. Rodgers and the Reds haven’t lost in a span of eight games, and have only recorded one loss since the blasted ruddy terrible horrendous eye-opening Crystal Palace match in November. I wouldn’t venture into the realm of “brilliance”...

Looking Between The Lines | Liverpool FC Tactical Analysis

In modern day football, the space between the lines is one of the most key areas, if not the key area in attack. One of the most simple reasons for this is that a player who positions himself in this space is theoretically unmarked. If they are to be marked it generally requires one or...

Five Transfer Targets for Rodgers to Consider

It won't be long before Jim White and the yellow Sky Sports breaking news ticker will be tattooed across our television screens as January draws to close. But for Liverpool, who haven't made any significant signings yet, time is of the essence if they want to add that extra piece of quality to push...

MariNO Balotelli

"They tried to take him back to Italy but we said no, no, no" - Amy Winehouse, kind of. When he signed for the Reds in the summer of 2014 it was set up for the Italian striker to live up to his nickname, Super Mario. However this hasn't been the case as of yet, but...

Rating Liverpool’s Summer Signings, Halfway Through 1st Season

The 2014 summer transfer window was certainly an eventful one. If Luis Suarez was not biting an Italian in Brazil, Mario Balotelli was being welcomed into Melwood by ice buckets of all sorts. Whilst the former opted to exit the club due to aggravating back problems due to continuously carrying the club in the 2013-14 season, the...
